I agree with the bold to a point. Take it too far and you can divide the locker room and create a QB controversy. If White is starting, how many practice reps will Zach get? The answer is not many. We know that Zach is a hard worker and watches lots of film. He's already had two games to see how the offense has been run effectively. He doesn't need to sit for 5 games or the rest of the season. He needs the opportunity to put that into practice in games so it becomes part of his play routinely. Doing something yourself is very different than just watching someone else do it. To ultimately learn, players needs to play, not watch. There's only so much they can learn by watching.
I agree, but I don't discount the possibility that White, just because he's a JAG and been on someone's bench for a few years, that he hasn't figured out how to QB and win games. White set records his first time out as starting QB. For a QB starved franchise like the Jets, that's something you can't ignore.
Actually it's exactly the kind of thing a down-trodden franchise without a clue would do. The Jets would have brought Drew Bledsoe back at the first opportunity no question and it would have taken years for Brady to get back on the field if at all. "Brady? What did he do? Bledsoe just got a $100M contract because he's a FQB."
Unless I am totally mistaken, I have not seen Wilson run the offense that LeFluer has called the last two games. To my untrained eye it looks completely different than what Zach was running. Now if the coaching staff knows that Wilson is incapable of running that offense, then so be it. He needs to sit and learn how to run it as effectively as White and Johnson. But if he hasn't been given a chance because they just startes running it after he was hurt, then I think we need to reserve judgement until Wilson actually gets a shot at running it. I think that's fair.
I disagree that it's easy to do - White has the highest completion percentage of any QB with more than 50 throws this year. BUT, I do take your point that deeper throws need to be worked in as well. I still maintain that Wilson is likely to be the better QB but I am not going to ignore performance over potential or expectations due to draft status. We'll see what White can do this coming game. Whatever happens, I think Wilson will get his chance again, probably the week after. If Wilson still struggles to make the easy throws over a three- or four-game span, then things get interesting. And I would prefer a QB who can hit on 70+ per cent of short throws over a guy who can't crack 60 per cent but completes the occasional big play. You can put drives together with short accurate throws. It's much harder the other way.
That contradicts what White has been able to do. He sat and watched and when his chance came he looked ready. It's too late now, and the debate has been had, but Wilson could have really used some time to watch and learn before being thrown out there. He clearly wasn't ready. The coaching staff should have known that. That said, I am excited to see if his breather has helped him, and how he looks having watched White run the offense.
You can be fooled by CMP%. White’s 70% is legit. He’s been extremely accurate in the short to intermediate passing game with great ball placement allowing guys to get YAC. I want to see what his deep ball looks like. His one attempt was way off.
It's not like he only got a hundred yards on those 37 completions. It is not easy to do anything in the NFL, except hand the ball off.
Michael Vick was a career 53% CMP guy until Andy Reid got a hold of him after prison. His first full year under Reid, his CMP% jumped 10 points to 63%. You think he improved his accuracy tossing the ball around to fellow inmates in the yard? Andy schemed more easy throws for him which improved that metric but didn’t really improved his well established accuracy and ball placement as an 8th year vet. Vick was still the same guy as evident by his CMP% coming back down to the mean in the years that follow.
Zach is more accurate than what his CMP% would suggest but certainly has been less accurate than what we expected. Is that not a fair statement?
I wasn't sure what to expect. Did you expect Josh Allen to have a 52.8% CMP his rookie year? I mean that's fucking awful.
I think he hasn’t taken the gimmies that White and has not consistently, accurately and timely completed them when he has like White. Mike’s been in the league for a minute so it’s totally understandable that he’s able to diagnose quicker. I don’t fault Zach or any young QB for that. What I fault Zach for is blatantly passing up easy completions for highlight ones, inaccuracy and poor ball placement. Those are all under his control.
Fair enough but I don't think White even looks for the deep ball. Ever. And maybe that's a good thing because he knows he can't throw it while Wilson thinks he can. Wilson needs to learn when to check it down but I don't want him to not try to hot one deep when the situation dictates it. In any event, my feeling is that we are totally fucked if White ends up being the better QB because we aren't winning a championship with him and that's what it is all about.
CMP% is your thing not mine’s. I expected it to not be aesthetically or statistically pleasing early w/ Allen but expected him to keep whatever team that drafted in games by any means necessary whether it be w/ his arms or legs.
You might be right about the deep ball thing. White excused not looking deep in the CIN game as being game plan specific. That’s one of the things I was going to watch for in the IND game but unfortunately his night was cut short. This week should tell us more. He supposedly was known for his strong arm coming out of college. This is what I’ve read; I didn’t see it for myself.
It is not that Zach has been inaccurate. To me it looks like more timing and decision making. Bad timing looks like inaccurate throw. He has had a few inaccurate throws but most misses have been because of timing.
