White didn’t do anything to lose his job though. He moved the chains vs NE, god knows how many times he put the Jets in Scoring position, and was solid vs Indy? Not something you can just give up on.
Of course you can give up on it. Neither did Zach (do anything to lose his job)! Zach is the future of this franchise, not White. Zach has 5x, maybe 10x the talent White has. With the way the OL, and the rest of the offense is playing now, and the way LaFleur is calling plays, the offense should be even better with Zach. This year was not about winning as many games as they could. It was all about getting Zach experience. That's the only thing that White and Joshnson have over Zach. The idea that the Jets should sit Zach and start White is absurd. It's great that White has looked good. The Jets were hoping that he would develop into a solid long-term BACKUP QB. He is not going to be the starter.
No player should ever win a position on the field by his position on a draft board. You earn a position on the field by performance on the field. White has; Wilson hasn't.
Bledsoe was a vet and Pats knew what he could do or couldn't do. Brady was a rookie and his potential was what Pats considered when making that change. In our case, Wilson is still a 21 year old rookie with tons of upside. White is also another unknown with a lot of upside. Jets job is difficult really. I am glad White is OK so we get to see him in a few more games. No reason to rush Wilson from injury. Regarding this topic. I am glad White is RFA. Joe D's job is really difficult.
Definitely, but Bledsoe was considered their franchise qb. They could have easily been set on putting him back in when healthy. I’m not set on putting Zach back in at this point until we see what white has first . I don’t want to see Zach automatically assumed starting qb at this point, just because he’s was drafted #2, and white a 5th rounder . If it were me, it would be an easy decision right now, as whites earned it, and Zach has shown he needs more work.
I can't think of another time that I've disagreed with you, and this is only a minor quibble, but I don't think Joe D's job is tough in this regard at all. Sure, other aspects of his job are tough, but the decision between playing Zach and White is a no-brainer. Zach is the future of the franchise. They eschewed signing a vet QB to start because they believed that Zach is ready to start and this year was all about getting him experience. If they abandoned that now, it would just support the idea that JD made a big mistake in not signing or trading for a veteran QB to start this year or keeping Darnold. Part of the plan was to try to develop White and/or Morgan into a long-term backup QB or maybe even trade for more draft capital. It didn't work with Morgan, but it did with White. Unless JD is blown away with a trade offer, White will be our backup QB for a while. LaFleur is using the same offense, but in a radically different way since he went to the booth. Zach made quick, good decisions, and was accurate in TC, and preseason. It was just when the season started, and the OL sucked and the WRs started dropping passes that he started pressing, and getting back into some old bad habits. He is smart and Saleh said that he rarely repeats a mistake. Zach isn't Favre. He wants to be great, and will do what it takes to get there, especially with Beck here now. There is no reason to even consider continuing to start White when Zach is healthy. I agree that Zach shouldn't be rushed back before he's healthy, but as soon as he's healthy, he should start. If he flops once he is starting again and continues to play hero ball rather than taking what the D is giving him, then there is cause for concern. Don't let some of the negative nellies on the board influence you, my friend.
While this is true, you have to take into consideration several factors. Most important one: Zach is a rookie. Mike has been in the League for 3-4 years, learned behind guys like Dak, and is older than Zach by 4 years. It is expected that it will take Zach some time to get to the point where Mike was at the start of the season. Additionally, this offense took a while to gel. OL looked like shit early, but is MUCH better now. Rookie Moore is improving and receivers in general are doing better. Mike is calling better plays from the booth. I can't wait to see what Zach can do within where the offense is today. Also, Zach was looking really great in NE game before he got hurt. I did the breakdown of every play earlier. Basically flowless performance based on what he was given. The only play where he made a wrong decision is the long pass where he got hurt. Good shorter option was available and long throw was a bit off. And even that resulted in PI, because when you have a cannon for an arm and give your receivers a chance, good things happen - it's much harder to play defense now based on current rules. Now, if Zach comes back and all of the sudden offense stalls, he is not making good decisions, etc, I agree perhaps he should sit some more. But after good outing again NE and improved play-calling, OL, and WR, he needs to get a shot to show what he can do - probably as early as a Miami game.
All I can say NC is we need to see Wilson’s improvement on the field. I really don’t give a rats ass where he was drafted, remember Blair Thomas? Truly I do hope that he can learn from watching, however I do believe it’s White’s job to lose. As a Jets fan I want us to be in our best position to win. Right now it looks like Mike White.
Where did he make reference to draft position? He said he has ten times the potential and as such he is considered the future of the franchise. Where he is right now is not the end state. Besides, the offensive play calling, the amount of passing on first down, the amount of reverses, trick plays, and the amount of unpredictability by our OC,and the running game is an order of magnitude better that when Zach was at the helm. All in all rest assure Zach will be back under the helm for at least the next year like it or not. This s far more than how many games we win with Mike versus Zach this year but to find out if Zach can be our guy. We will not know much if he is sitting on the bench. Mike did an admirable job, no doubt, but unless this team wants to move from Zach for good now, which would be idiotic, he needs to find the way back on the field soon.
Has everyone lost their mind? We need to groom our rookie formlong term success not dump our 2md rd pick for JAG QB. This board is losing it.
If it’s not draft position, then how is assumed that zack is the future of this team, franchise qb? He certainly hasn’t shown it on the field. Not compared to the performance of mike white vs the bengals. we thought Sam was the future until last year. We think everyone we draft, especially high, is the future. That hasn’t worked out in a very long time. This team would be stupid , to not fully see what mike white, and Zach have to offer. As of now, white has earned the spotlight.
Belichik had just signed Bledsoe to the second $100M contract in NFL history (Brett Favre signed a $100M deal a week earlier). Brady didn't throw a TD pass until his 3rd start. He threw 18 all year long in 14 starts. Gosh I wonder what a smart coach does here when the playoffs come around?
One thing not to forget is we were all worried about the POUNDING Zach was taking....at one point he was the most hit/sacked/pounded QB in the league. That takes a toll on a young kid. If you got hit the way Zack got hit, you'd never go back to that strip club again If Mike plays well against the Bills, and there's talk about staying with Mike, one reason would be to prevent Zack from getting PTSD. Save him till next year when JoeD has time to finish his Oline follies.
I guess that you misunderstood my post. Nowhere did I mention dumping Wilson. In fact I think it would be more beneficial if he took a little longer to fully grasp the game. Mahomes had no issues learning from Smith. What is wrong with that?
Why would it be White's job to lose? Injuries don't normally cause players to lose their starting jobs once they're healthy. I agree that we need to see Wilson's improvement on the field, but how will that happen if White is playing? You may not care where Wilson was drafted, but I guarantee you that JD and the Johnsons care. You're guilty of short-sighted thinking imo. You're basing your belief on 1 1/4 games. White is a limited QB. We don't know if he can throw deep yet. He could be a Chad Pennington lite, with a little stronger arm, but maybe not as sharp mentally. He doesn't have the potential to be a top 5 or top 10 QB in the NFL. You also don't get that relatively speaking, the Jets don't give a crap about wins and losses this season. Their whole focus this season is on developing Wilson and other young players. They're not going to shortchange the future just to win another game or two this season. If they cared about winning as many games as they could this season, then they would have added a veteran QB to start and let Zach sit this year.
While that makes sense on one level, it could serve to ruin Zach's confidence as it doesn't say much for the Jets' confidence in him and his ability to stay healthy. That was one of the reasons why many didn't want the Jets to draft him. I believe that he can handle it physically, especially if he starts taking what the D gives and gets the ball out quickly. IMO the only valid reason for sitting Zach would be if his knee hasn't healed so as to not risk making it a chronic condition.
Smith was an established quality QB who had been starting for years. Are you seriously trying to compare/equate White with Smith?
