What you saw is a fourth year pro whose been around the league and understands the intricacies of playing within a NFL offense. How to move the chains, work the play clock, navigate the pocket, etc. It all comes with time whether you're on the practice squad or not.

Play calling and all that jazz helps, but the biggest difference between White and Wilson is that White looks like he understood how to make plays to win games, not create YouTube highlights.

That's not to say Wilson can't be a successful pro, but I'm saying he just doesn't know how to do so quite yet.

I like the post, but who are the Mims haters? Who hates our second round pick only from last year?

On the other hand, there are definitely Mims lovers that crowned this guy because of one 40 yard catch. All of a sudden, he had this productive rookie year (he didn't) and was our 2nd best receiver (he isn't).

I hope he pans out, but he's got a lot to clean up

Disregard the question I asked you in another thread. I’m very behind on reading everything.

Well, we saw a kid play in some kind of system today but what was it, or whose was it? Was this LaFleur's system or were the first six games his system? They certainly weren't the same system. Hopefully the coach learned something today about what players he has to make the plays and how to fit his calls to the guys he has on the field.

I also don't think where the calls are coming from is as great a difference as what many here are making of it. With the advent of instant replay on the tablets for every play the overhead view is always available. The "first 15" plays were pretty much established before game time and it was clear that this was a different start than any we'd seen to date.

It’s almost like it’s a good idea to sit a rookie for a little while to let him learn the game.

This Is the absolute answer to this thread. IMO

Did the booth help? I'm sure It probably helped In certain ways, but I don't think ML going to the booth Is why this offense looked so much different. No way.

It Is night and day and obvious after watching Mike White play In a full game within this offense.

Wilson could very well be a stud In the NFL In the future. If he doesn't sit though at this point, I think It will only hinder his potential moving forward. Let the kid learn from afar.

I think you were right, JM. Wilson should've sat and learned this year from the start.

White looked very comfortable…passes were coming out quick and on target. I don’t know if the playcalling for Zach was different or if it’s just that Zach wasn’t seeing the plays he should have been making, but this game plan today looks like what we should have been doing all along.

but so typical Jets where we often lose the games we should win, and then somehow pull an upset out our ass…last year it was an 0-13 Jets team beating the Rams in LA…this year this upset is huge. But funny how the line looked a lot better…I’m starting to think that Zach’s injury as it’s not serious may be a blessing in disguise. We’ll see how White plays once teams have some tape on him, but today’s performance was monumental. Most yards sine Vinny! Crazy. RBs both looked good. Receivers looked good…Cole was robbed…but the refs gave it back with that last minute personal foul call…

    wow…

I thoroughly enjoyed the tricky plays LaFloor threw into the mix.

Running Carter up the gut twice on the goal line?... not so much...

I can't believe that moving up to the booth made that much difference. The O looked completely different on the opening drive and on the scripted plays too. In other weeks it didn't look like they had even practiced any. I suspect that the difference was more down to the QB who found the open man and took what the defense gave him more than where the OC called plays from. And that allowed LaFleur to open up the playbook more. It is also possible that White's skill set meshes more naturally with what LaFleur wants to do as well.

Tablets aren't real time. The overhead view comes after the fact on tablets, not before. It will affect how ML sees the field and the game not to mention his own comfort level. The birdseye view provides confirmation of what was probably viewed on video during practices. You can stop something before it happens if you can see it coming. I wonder if Ulrich might consider a move up to the booth for a game or two. at 2-5, what do they have to lose?

ML stated coming in he'd rather be up in the booth than on the sidelines. His comfort level is as important as his game plan. Much easier to make adjustments when you can see the entire field. Something you cannot do from the sideline. You could always set up a deer stand but that might be a bit awkward,

I think it's this plus the calm and quiet room. On the sideline things can get crazy, obviously, and you're forcing an inexperienced coach to call an offense with mayhem around him and while trying to work with his rookie QB.

Being in the booth allows him to focus on the playcalling in a controlled environment. It also allows him to give Calabrese and Cavanaugh the time to work with the QB while focusing on the playcalling.

I loved the move which is why I have been saying it for weeks. Let's see if the playcalling continues this way, but I believe it will

Seeing it on a tablet is nowhere near the same as seeing the entire field live in real time. I mentioned in my post above, it's also the calm and quiet room that can make a world of difference.

Here is a quote from Shanahan back in 2016 when he moved to the box:

“You weren’t allowed to talk to the quarterback at length before up there and this is the first year for that,” Shanahan said. “You had to talk to someone else who then got the play to the quarterback. That cost you four seconds. Once the rule changed, I wanted to try it out. I’ve found it to be more relaxing. You get to gather your thoughts. Study. See what happens more clearly. Prepare better. Spread out your work. On the sidelines, you see pictures, you’re talking, distracted. There are less distractions up there."

I think it can be a very big difference. Obviously we will have to see what comes of it in the coming weeks.

Actually I was considering the tablets to be "replay machines," but are we sure they don't have a real-time feature or live feed? Everything is a tradeoff with communication to the field losing something if the coach is upstairs. Either way, I don't see LaFleur's location as the deciding factor in the play calling difference yesterday as evidenced by the early possessions.

Is it now a fact that the move to the booth is definitely proving to be a huge factor?

There was argument that the answer was the change in QB more than Lafleurs move up top. Well....

Josh Johnson - 317 passing yards and 3 TDs

Total offense - 500 yards and 4 TDs

In the two games he has been up top, we have over 1,000 total yards on offense with 8 TDs and 64 points scored......

Too much evidence pointing one way over the other.

More screens, more trick plays, more involvement from Elijah Moore, more designed throws to the back, etc. The entire game plan looks different. Hell, the last game Lafleur called when Zach got hurt was another run, run, pass to go 3 and out immediately.

We'll know for sure when Wilson returns, but in my opinion, the entire system looks different and I largely attribute that to Lafleur and his move up top
