Mike White, Geno Smith, Trevor Siemian, and Cooper Rush won games today. All those guys are low-end backups making peanuts. My point: The top QBs are worth their weight in gold due to their consistency. However, beyond that there are a lot of professional QBs out there who can play in the right situation. I think you are going to have to prove to be an absolute MVP level QB in order to get a second contract. Geno Smith has a passer rating over a 100 in Seattle. If you put him on the Browns don’t you think he can give you 85-90% of what Baker Mayfield gives you? If you are the Browns would you pay 30-40MM per year to Baker?
Backups win games all the time. The Cowboys were 6-10 last year. Dak was hurt. They basically ran back the same team and are 6-1. Geno and Simian have had opportunities to start. Did you watch Geno when we had him? He was always capable of games like yesterday but there’s a reason his teams are 13-21 in his starts. I won’t even ask with Siemian because he was barely a jet, but same with him. These guys are backups for a reason.
Every single team that has consistently been in the playoffs over the last decade or so has had a top tier QB on their roster during that time (the only exception being the Ravens with Flacco where their elite defense carried the team) QB is by a country mile the most important part of the team (which explains the Jets never ending struggles to a degree)
The teams that overvalue the mediocre quarterbacks are the ones that get stuck in a perpetual state of 9-7 football. The ones that retain the top guys are not overvaluing them.
Well Geno looked lost for about a two week span. And he still gets skittish in the pocket with time but he got rid of the ball quicker this week at least. These backups have to follow the plan moreso then the starters. You get more exceptional and off script plays moreso with the top tier guys. All the backups that won knew the gameplan and followed it to a T. White you could say made a few great throws but moreso he was decisive with where to go. Don’t be a hero, just make the right play. Rush was the same way, they didn’t have him run the Dak offense, it was a gameplan suited for his talents.
well yesterday’s game points out how important the QB position is….we rolled out the same team we’ve been rolling out, including Van Roten giving up a pressure on the very first play! … we had a few injuries…Corey Davis to start and Fant in the second quarter. And you saw that with competent QB play, we put up over 30 points, actually scored in the first quarter, and held time of possession. The biggest change in our lineup was QB. Just shows that Zach is not yet ready….we hope he’ll get there, but today he’s not quite there. Either he’s not seeing the easy passes that are there to be made, or he’s opting to go deeper with the ball, or whatever other reason is there. But it shows that if the QB runs the system…and yesterday we saw all the screens that usually kill us, we saw the easy passes to RBs in the flat, we saw the pass open up the running game a bit. QB is ALL the difference in the world. The thing about the elite QBs is that they can play like this every day. Every game. Shit, Brees had like a 70% completion rate. They play like this PLUS they can hit the 40 yard play too, which White did not do…he kept to the short quick easy passes that are there to be had, which is what you do when your OL is suspect. so yeah, those QBs are worth their salaries if you want to beat elite defenses in the playoffs and win championships. Otherwise you’re what we’ve been for years…a fringe team with an occasional wildcard playoff run.
You will never have a good team with a crappy QB. But you don't need the best QB in the league to win either. Also, I feel like so many teams wreck their salary caps paying QBs too much money and end up being less than mediocre at many other positions.
Since they changed the rules to protect and defend the QB there is no doubt that the position is the most important. I wish the NFL would allow more defense against wide outs like a ten yard bump. But that would affect fantasy which is the lifeblood of the NFL.
If you have a top 10 QB, it's worth paying him the big bucks. If you don't, you're better off trading him before you have to pay him the big bucks to a team that will pay him. There's some gray area though, like what if you have a league-average starter (16-17th best QB) who's willing to play for bit less.
True but it doesn't happen. It's why Kirk Cousins is the 8th highest paid QB in the league with Wentz 9th, and Garroppolo 12th. Matt Ryan at 10th at this point in his career even though he was paid when he was at the top. It'll be interesting to see what the Browns do with Baker. They're fucking nuts if they give him $30 million a year.
Since their current HC/GM duo didn't select him, their plan could be to take a QB in the 2022 or 2023 draft and ride him out until then.
I would imagine they pickup the fifth year option and do as you suggest while being ready to move on. I just think that roster is going to be too good for them to be in position to take a top QB but this might be a good year to look at someone like Corral if he stumbles a bit more and falls. There's no top end QB in this draft and Baker would allow them to take a sit and wait approach.
If anything, they undervalue them. If you have a All-Pro caliber QB, you're guaranteed to make the playoffs every year. A couple years into Brady and Manning's careers, the league changed all the defensive coverage rules to make it almost impossible to cover a receiver. That means that as long as a QB had time to throw, he's going to get off a pass at an open receiver. An all-pro like Brady or Manning is going to put the football on the receiver's hands every single time; because of the new coverage rules, the receiver will be open when it gets there. In this league you're a contender with an All-Pro QB an average-or-better offensive line and literally anything else.
He does have one of the 78 perfect passer games ever recorded in NFL history. Can you name the other three Jets on the list?
Well... I know Kenny O. had a couple... I'd like to say Namath... but I'm not %100 sure. I can't think of any others.
