In 2012 the Washington Redskins drafted QB Griffin at #2 overall, and then exactly 100 picks later in the same draft took QB Kirk Cousins in the 4th round. Cousins has turned out to be the better pro. Being taken at #2 overall should not entitle anyone to play ahead of someone else.
If true, why didn't they use this with Wilson when they saw him struggling? Not disputing your assertion, just wondering.
They had like 3-4 trick plays. The game plan was far from “simplified” for White. If anything more was added. The biggest difference I saw from a scheme perspective was more screens and bigger emphasis on the short passing game. White’s accuracy, ball placement and willingness to take what the defense was also a difference from what we’ve been experiencing early this season.
Agree. Also, yesterday revealed the Jets have a good number of playmakers on offense. They just needed someone to get them the ball with consistency which is what Mike White did.
Since I didn't see the game I can't really say one way or the other, but I would question the idea of drastically changing the game plan, as was suggested because White was exposed to the same playbook as Zach, for the same amount of time, so why would they limit it? That said, they are two different QBs with different strengths and weaknesses, so I could see then creating a different - not necessarily simpler - game plan for White. Still, from what people have said, the game plan was different, so maybe they need to consider that when Wilson returns.
The gameplan was way different and some may not like to hear it, but LeFluer was a huge part of this success. If you saw the NE game last week, we basically stole their gameplan. Except we threw a few more screen and a few less runs. And since our skill players are better than theirs we had even more success. That said, White executed the offense far better than Zach has. His instincts were much further along than Zach's. The one caveat I'll add, and may be our nightmare, is that was a very flat Bengal's team. It was a classic trap game.
Looked to me like this was the first game Lafleur actually game planned. I think having an inexperienced QB out there forced him to get creative and scheme something against a stout defense. They're so focused on demonstrating that ZW is a great pick that they really didn't scheme anything like they did yesterday with him under centre. I found myself expecting a same old Jets ending to that until the big pick on the screen pass. And then to stand up and play some D was the icing on the cake. Unfortunately, the arrival of the messiah to land in Jersey is quite unlikely, but I'll take beating a couple top seeded AFC teams in a rebuild year. Here's to hoping this is the start of something. Go Jets.
Might as well roll with him. Be nice to see them actually show up in a very rare Primetime game. It's been shameful the last couple years...
Yes yes and yes. A lot of those screen plays weren't Charlie "checkdown" Whitehurst just dumping it off because he's paralyzed with fear from throwing down the field. Those were well designed screens with a purpose and then for the most part extremely well executed with the trick play stuff being built off of them. I'm in the "this wasn't a total fluke" camp and I can't wait to see what happens Thursday with presumably a different game plan for the Colts. If White can hold down the fort for awhile and maybe even win a few games I think it helps everything with this franchise, including Zach.
So all we need to do is go with a simplified scheme and we get 400 yards out of our QB? Come on, man...
I think LaFleur stepped up in a big way. He put a few wrinkles in, kept the defence on its heels early. If it wasn't for the two INTs the Jets might have built a big lead. The best thing about this game (apart from winning) was seeing our team looking prepared and fighting till the end. Our coaching staff took a big step.
Agreed. I don't think this was just a case of dumbing down the offense. Mike White is currently, just a better QB. There is a reason the OL and play calling looked so much better; and it wasn't a coincidence. White recognized the rush significantly better than Zach has all year. He took what the defense gave him the entire game. His short term accuracy was near perfect. I don't think he has anywhere near the arm talent Zach has, but it doesnt matter if you cant hit the short throws.
He wont get those against indy. At any point if cincy changes strategies, its probably a different game.
White spread the ball around more. 10 different receivers caught a pass. Wilson has a tendency to lock onto Corey Davis. The "taking what the defense is giving you" is a result of White not giving the defense any indication of where he wanted to go
Of all the stats from yesterday I think the one that really stuck to me was that White is only the 6th Jets QB to even hit the 400 yard mark in a game. Namath, Todd, O’Brien, Foley and Testaverde. LOL. So Foley threw for 400 yards but Pennington and Fitzpatrick never did ?? Geez….that’s a sorry stat for any franchise that’s been around for over 60 years. EDIT: I just read an article about this. Yesterday was only the 10th time in history a Jets QB has hit the 400 yard mark!! Namath only did it just 3 times! Todd and O’Brien twice each. Testaverde and Foley just once. Wow…..I had no idea it was only 10 times…
