Damn that’s a really good point about the Colts LBs closing on the underneath stuff. Leonard and Bobby O been tackling machines. well good QBs and OCs have to take what the defense is giving. Wish we had Becton back to take the run game right at them. I absolutely loved what I saw from White, and the Lafleur game plan for that matter. If they can show a good performance again (not 400 or anything), and done differently, then we really may have something here. At least worth watching for a change.
I will tell you this much. If Zach gets the starting job back the coaching staff will bench his ass before he gets the chance to throw a fourth interception in the same game again.
Best QB should play. If the Mike White we saw yesterday is the same guy the Jets get going forward, than I don't think there is a question. If he comes out and throws for 300 yards and 3 TDs against Indy you play him until he proves he isn't the guy. If he proves to be a franchise QB, then it doesnt really matter where Zach was drafted. Just need to see more. He didn't look great against New England and Cinci clearly came off a great win and was overlooking the Jets.
I didn't see the game, but what White did is certainly impressive and gives justification for having kept him instead of signing an expensive vet who is overpriced for what they can actually deliver. But as to benching Wilson because of one game, IDK. There's much more to developing a QB than just looking at the stats he produces - good or bad - meaning the coaches have much more insight into this than I or anyone here has. That said, if White somehow continues to play at a high level, it wouldn't be a bad thing for Zach to have the chance to sit and learn. No matter how talented a rookie QB is, learning to be a successful starter is massively difficult, even on a decent team. But this team - while having more talent than it has in a long time - is very young and inexperienced, as are the coaches, and there are still a lot of holes that need to be filled. Trying to climb the learning curve of being a good pro QB, and having to deal with the other issues may just be too much to expect at this point from Wilson. I remain convinced that he's the future, but even great QBs sat on the bench for a time in the beginning. But, like I said, the coaches have much more information with which to make this decision, and I'm going to trust them - for now.
Lets see if Mike White can make a name for himself this season and make that determination. Worst case scenario would be the Jets trading him for draft capital maybe? If they move onto Zach while Mike White is the hot hand putting up good numbers. I don't know though, it's way to early to tell.
We have to remember that Wilson is a high draft choice and as such signed a contract somewhere north of 40M. From the organization's POV Wilson is the future, not Mike White who is probably making close to the NFL minimum. What happened yesterday, among many things, confirms that the problem up until now has not been JD, Saleh or Lefleur, it's been Wilson. For whatever reason, the NFL game has been too much for him to grasp right now. At some point Wilson must get back on the field. However, if White continues to deliver wins, which is more important than passing yards, I'd have no objection to the Jets riding the hot hand. Patrick Mahomes sat out his first year and turned out fine, the same could happen with Wilson.
I'm ok with sitting zach for the rest of the year if white keeps playing well. It could be the best thing for his development. It used to be the norm to let rookie qbs sit for a while before having them play. If white plays well, and flacco is a good mentor zach could learn a lot.
I'm not saying you're wrong in what they'll actually do but when organizations make decisions on players that aren't performance based, they turn into consistent losers.
The point of the game is to win. To win, you have to play your best players. How much you paid for a player or how high you drafted them shouldn't amount to jack shit. I just hope that Saleh isn't bullshitting; it annoys me when coaches insist that the injured starter is still the guy when the backup is winning, especially if the starter wasn't doing shit. If our minimum salary no name guy proves to be a better choice to start this year, let him ride it out.
Zach Wilson is the starting QB of the New York Jets, but there is no hurry for him to be playing if Mike White is playing well, which he did yesterday. In fact, this is a blessing in disguise. The Jets can see what they have in Mike White now, while Wilson continues to heal and learn from watching. Hopefully it will help slow down the game for him once he returns. If White continues to deal like yesterday, he should continue to start. Wilson will get back on the field eventually, but White playing well right now is obviously great for the Jets. Wilson will eventually return to his QB1 spot and will be the QB1 headed into 2022. It's fun to have this conversation though, thanks to an amazing performance from Mike White yesterday!
The thing is though, IF Mike White proves to be the real deal, why does Wilson HAVE to be the starter? Just because he was drafted #2? I keep seeing all the writers saying that "Wilson is the future". But what if White is better? I don't want this team to have a situation like Philly where we ship off our better performing QB just because we paid our underperforming QB more money. Also, Mike White is only 26 years old. If he's good enough to be a FQB and stays healthy, he's young enough to give a team 10 to 15 years (or more) of service. I'll emphasize that I'm not sold fully on White; he had one great game. I'm just cautioning against the being desperate for Wilson to get back come hell or high water if he's not ready, or if it turns out that White is indeed more than just a one hit wonder.
First-round QB plays like shit: "He needs time. We need to be patient. His receivers dropped a lot of balls. He only just missed on a few of those passes. He's played really good defenses. He'll figure it out. He'll make a big jump next year. There's a reason he was a first-round pick." Fifth-round QB throws for 400+ yards and three TDs: "It's a fluke. The defense didn't take him seriously. His receivers bailed him out on some bad throws. He could easily have thrown three more picks. His TDs were lucky. He'll be shit next week. There's a reason he was a fifth-round pick."
Absolutely. Wilson has been bad. White, in his first start and second game, did something no Jets QB has done since Vinny. Wilson SHOULD be the future, but there is no guarantee. He should be made to earn it, and White should be given a chance to show this was not a fluke.
White earned his spot yesterday. He should definitely play Thursday and next Sunday too. That’s all you can really say since yesterday was his first game. Zach Wilson wasn’t ready when he played. Will he be ready after sitting for a few weeks? Who knows? If Mike White performs at the level he performed yesterday, I don’t think ZW should see the field this season. Watch and learn, hold the clip board and be ready to go in if MW goes down. That’s where I’m at. Now if we do something insane like win every game with Mike White…I don’t want to even think about something crazy like that. Wait and see, wait and see.
Not that it's gonna happen, but if White performs at the level he played yesterday, he's our new franchise QB, and Wilson is done here.
It's that simple. Of course, I doubt White WILL play as well as that for the rest of the season, but if he does, what would we achieve by swapping him for someone who MIGHT play that well?
And I'm not saying it's right. However, when a team invests that much money in a player, they're going to want to see some return on investment and they're not going to get it with him sitting on the bench.
Whites been in the league like 4 seasons, if he wasnt able to show anything to warrant consideration before yesterday then there is a reason why. Theres a reason he was on the practice quad to begin with. People need to remember that. He played a hell of a game, but he missed easy throws too, his ints were similar to quite few of wilsons, balls hitting recievers hands or thru them, so you dont give one a pass and not the other. Also this is a failure of Cincinnati's coaching as well to adjust to the quick passes.....they never did, they jusy played soft zone the whole game and rarely brought pressure. The playcalling was much better yesterday than its been. 1st quarter, 1st down plays were runs 70% prior to yesterday and it was far less than that yesterday. White played a hell of a game, but lets put it in perspective.
They we go again with the 'he must be crap because he hasn't played before', despite playing really well in his first chance. Fifth-round picks do not often get a chance to start, outside of injury, so with Sam and now Zach on the team, White was only ever going to fall into an opportunity like this by chance. We had no idea how he would perform in his first start, because it was his first start. He blew the bloody doors off. This endless rationalising about how his good play somehow doesn't count, in the same way that some argue that Zach's bad play somehow doesn't count, is just the wrong way to look at things. I want to make it clear that I think it is about 90 per cent certain that Wilson will turn out to be a better QB than White. It doesn't mean Wilson will be a great QB, but chances are he will be better. But on the evidence so far, he isn't.
