I don't disagree that JD's personnel moves have been pretty good. How could we allow him to hire another HC given how bad the first one has been though?
Easily. To begin with, it's not a foregone conclusion that our present HC won't be back or won't be ultimately successful. Secondly, so JD is allowed to make mistakes in other areas of his job, but not in hiring? Do you hear how irrational and unrealistic that is? Saleh was the consensus best candidate for the job. Everyone thought he was a great leader of men. Jets fans would have been in an uproar if JD hadn't hired Saleh. We don't know what the other candidates said or wanted. People lie in interviews, and/or change their minds about things once they get the job. No GM can foresee what kind of job a rookie HC will do and if he will change his mind, and if so, how. Rookie HCs make mistakes just like rookie players and rookie GMs do. They should have time to learn and make corrections too. Saleh seems like a pretty smart man, and I believe is a good man. He may be loyal to a fault, but when push comes to shove, I think he will know or will learn what changes he needs to make and what changes need to be made with the offense. There's no easy set formula for rookie HCs to use, especially with a team with as many rookies and young players as this one has, and that has had as many injuries as we have had. I think he may have made a mistake in bringing the Shanahan offense and LaFleur here, but I can understand why he did, even beyond his friendship with LaFleur. Go take a look at the history of the Steeler franchise, and the other long-term successful teams in the NFL. You'll see one thing in common. They are patient. They don't fire their GMs and HCs every 2-3 years. The people they hire stay in those positions for a long time, and they have good years and bad years. You're a smart guy and great fan, but you're thinking strictly from a position of impatience and frustration, not one of patience realizing what a mess this team/situation was and long-term stability for the team. I hate being non-competitive and suffering blowout losses as much as you or anyone, but imo we're just going to have to accept that the growing pains are going to be a lot worse than we thought (nothing is ever easy for us Jets fans anyway), there are going to be more bumps in the road, and it's going to take longer than we thought to turn things around. I know that some teams are able to turn things around, but those teams didn't have the absolute crap roster that we had with little or no talent, no veteran leadership, and a solid, stable FO and organization. JD has heen having to change everything from the ground up from the way the scouts do their jobs, to the culture, to the roster, to the approach to team building. 10 times out of 10, I'd rather give JD or any GM who has done a great job with trades, the draft and FA, and how he handles the media and things in-house another chance to hire the right CS, than I would fire him, hope I could find another GM who could do all things as well as he has and be lucky/make the right decision in his first hire. If JD gets it right the second time, the organization has stability, and there won't be total upheaval and everything changing again. Once the team learns the new schemes well, he can hire a HC who will keep the same schemes, who will be more of a disciplinarian, and who will make better choices for his OC and CS. The probability is that especially with the way the Johnsons go about things, we'd never hire another GM as competent and with the background JD has, and he would be much worse in every aspect of the job than JD has been, and then we'd be looking for yet another GM and CS in another 2-3 years. IMO JD has earned the right to hire the next HC if it comes to that. He deserves patience from us.
Your last sentence makes a very valid argument. Becton and Mims looked so promising last year. This year, almost immediately in the spring and summer, came reports that they had regressed. Maybe they haven't regressed, rather they don't fit the new OC and his system (if he has one). LaFleur should have built his system around his young stars, instead of the reverse. This coaching staff is pathetic.
Mims never caught more than 4 balls in a game last year and out of the 9 games he played in he caught less than four 6 times. If you want to call that promising, God bless you.
Okay, what's your point? Douglas should not have drafted Mims? Gase did not do a good job with Mims? Saleh/LaFleur are smart to keep Mims on the bench...or is it that they should use him more? Mims should be cut? All of the above? None of the above? This thread is comparing Gase coaching to Saleh coaching, and I'm not being a smart aleck, but I am missing the point of your response.
Saleh was a good "draw" last summer for free agents. As I recall, several 49ers expressed that they liked/ looked forward to playing for him, as did some guys the jets signed. Very few people were critical of the hiring. However, he (Saleh) hired his best man's brother as OC and that was very unwise. Saleh's defense looks more unprepared every week, either because of injuries or scheme or both. I think we can agree Douglas made a good hire at the time, but Saleh wanted to and did reward friends with jobs, AND be the player's friend and cheerleader, and the results show. If Saleh is fired (and if we end up 2-15, I hope he is), Douglas should have the final say over the next hire, if it comes to that.
We mostly agree, but on this point, I'll have to disagree with you. Mims was injured and missed most of TC, didn't have OTAs, mini-camp or any preseason, and missed a lot of practice time, yet he played well, and at the time was one of only a handful of WRs who averaged 40 yards per game receiving their rookie season. The other WRs are all big time WRs. I think he showed a lot of promise. He made a number of great catches last season.
He can't help it that Sam couldn't read Ds or find him. When Flacco played, Mims saw passes come his way, and he made a lot of big plays. His passes weren't 5 yard routes. He made tough contested catches. He's fast and has a great catch radius.
Yeah, I get all that and you are not wrong, but I truly believe the team will improve. It's clear the Jets internally decided this would be a learning season and not about wins and losses. That is why they chose to give so many young players key roles on the team. It is a risky approach, and honestly one I disagree with, but it is what it is. The hope is the more reps these guys get, the better they will be. That is what makes losing Zach Wilson hurt even more, even if it is only a couple weeks. The difference between Gase in 2019 and Saleh in 2021 is I felt the Jets were built to win and succeed in 2019. Sam headed into Year 2, signing big name free agents, hiring an offensive guru as their head coach. Instead they were embarrassing. Saleh in 2021 was entering with a rookie QB, rookie RB, rookie WR, instantly lost Lawson, Davis, and Becton, first time OC in LaFleur, 0 CB's with experience, etc so the expectations were lower. I still wanted to win and thought if the young guys could step up and click early the Jets could, but it has not happened yet. I think with Gase you could tell it was a failure before it even started, where with Saleh he deserves some more time. The 2021 season has definitely been disappointing so far though, no doubt about it.
@NCJetsfan hope all's well... it's frustrating to be so suck-ass... as I said elsewhere, I managed to not watch a Knicks game for about a decade... not for firing coaches or GMs yet
Thanks, all is good except for driving. On Tuesday night some idiot going in the opposite direction ran a red light and turned left in front of me. I still don't understand how I stopped and didn't wind up hitting him. Yesterday I was driving on a highway in the left lane and had a blowout and had to cross two lanes to get to the shoulder to change the tire. Then tonight, I had an idiot on a street to my right turn right on red right in front of me. It would have been fine if he turned into the right lane (I was in the center lane), but he crossed the center lane to the left lane. Again, I had to hit the brakes really hard. As if that wasn't bad enough, the moron then started coming over into my lane. Again I had to sit on the brakes and the horn. I was supposed to go on a road trip this weekend, but decided against it. I'm staying in bed tomorrow with the covers over my head. LOL With my luck someone will drive their car through the side of my bedroom.
