Douglas only hired Saleh. The rest of the CS was hired by Saleh and is squarely on him, NOT JD. I disagree that it's looking somewhat likely that Woody hired the wrong GM again. The negative vitriole is over the top. JD has handled the draft, trades and FA very well. He has added a lot of talent to the team. He succeeded in getting the Johnsons to give him the freedom to run the team. We ALL know what a mess the team was in the last 10 years, and how awful Mac was. It's going to take more than 6 months to turn this team around now that we have some talent and cleared out a lot of the dead wood. We still have holes, and the jury is out on Saleh and the rest of his staff. It's almost a certainty that LaFleur needs to be fired, but we really can't blame Saleh for hiring him. Many, if not most of us, would hire a friend as well. These days in any business or profession is all about who you know and friends helping each other up the ladder. We want to work with someone we like and trust. It's looking doubtful, but LaFleur could still learn and make the necessary changes. When I was his age I made a lot of similar mistakes of being a purist, being stubborn on my vision and way of doing things. I eventually learned through hard knocks and mentors. It would be better for the team and for us fans if LaFleur learns over the rest of the season, is back next year with big changes in his approach and attitudes and improvements in the way he does things, than have Saleh fire him, and hire another OC who changes the offense and blocking scheme, and then we have to start replacing some of the pieces we have in place and Zach has to learn a new offense. I don't know that there would be a proven quality OC who is available now or would be next year. We could wind up with another novice OC who is no better, and maybe even worse than LaFleur (although that's hard to imagine). What is happening now is exactly why I wanted to hire Brian Daboll. He has done a great job with Allen and the Buffalo offense. He may not have made a good HC, but it's almost for certain that he'd have Zach playing at a higher level and the offense functioning at a much higher level. Now that teams can't block another team from making a same level hire, maybe we can hire Daboll away from the Bills to be our OC or hire some other experienced OC (either NFL or collegiate) who has a proven track record.
Fair enough. Thanks for the points! Genuinely asking to see what the feedback is on these "sell the team" remarks.
Top ten salaries for a coach doesn’t represent quality. Rhule, Ron Rivera, are top ten in salary, do you want those guys as Jets HC? When we had a chance to get a seasoned HC in Mcarthy this board was not in favor of it, when Joe hired Saleh this board was ecstatic, now it’s matter of top ten salaried HC? I wanted Arthur Smith for the Jets because he had experience running a successful offense. It’s not the money that determines whether a HC is successful.
Do you fucking guys remember Leon Hess? The guy who tripped over his dick to hire Rich Kotite after he was fired from the Eagles? The guy who used to give "inspirational" speeches at practice before the Thanksgiving break? Anyone??
There's no doubt in my mind that JD and Saleh talked about who Saleh wanted as OC before Saleh got hired. I just can't imagine that was never brought up. If they didn't discuss it then that looks even worse on JD. JD's personnel moves haven't been too bad. He drafts decently and realizes the importance of stockpiling picks. He gets great value out of trades. Unfortunately for him it's looking like Saleh and his staff are completely clueless and that mistake may prove to be big enough to sink JD despite his decent personnel moves. If Saleh has to go we cannot let JD hire another coach. If the team doesn't improve this season Saleh should be on the hotseat. There's no excuse to not show improvement from last year where we had a horrible coach and less talent than we do this year.
Gotta love woody. Lucky to have an owner that eat sleeps and breathes football. Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if he could coach himself but I guess in his old age he leans toward delegating which is fine. Would be amazing to watch a game in woodys press box and just pick his mind , I bet he calls out the plays better than romo
I love how he referred to being in the business for 22 years. They've sucked in about 15 of them, but yay experience.
Sure, but some of those teams light years ahead of this team. One thing for Hess, he hired Parcells before he died. Just a year or 2 too late. If he had lived parcells might have stayed and bellicheat would have been our coach. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hey, didn’t we hear the same BS last year about Gase. How did that turn out Woody! Offensive genius for sure! Keep this to yourself. Us fans don’t go for it! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That was absolutely brought up in the interview. If for some reason it wasn't, then I would have some very serious doubts about Douglas. Any NFL franchise that is about to hand over a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract to a guy to lead the actual product they put on the field is going to ask about who he wants to bring in to fill his staff.
Somebody brought this up in another thread somewhere. Woody is a total outsider to pro football and doesn't have anyone close to him who is an insider at this point. All the old hands he inherited are long gone, which is probably not a bad thing given the track record, but still. He has no knowledgeable sources to lean on at this point, so he's gotta just roll with what he's got. I don't like it, but I understand it. At some point, if this keeps up, the league has to step in like they did with the NYGs in the late 70s and make them hire a George Young to right the ship. Its the only way.
The Jets probably had their best chance to get Harbaugh after his disastrous season at Michigan last year. Now he's righted the ship and got the contract extension before the year and that ship has sailed. Hopefully Saleh does the same but I don't see any big time culture changing coach out there that Woody could even mull over giving a blank check (not that he would as you've pointed out). It felt like two guys who supposedly love building through the trenches like Jim + Joe would've been a perfect fit. Jim deploys a man blocking scheme that Becton and AVT probably would've thrived in.
my fantasy team includes chase, mixon, and burrow is looking pretty dam good and you can bet i'm starting all 3 of them. Burrow is normally a backup for me to herbert but mixon and chase are every week starters for me anyway
I don't doubt that they talked it about it either, and I'm certain that JD probably questioned Saleh about the wisdom of doing that, but Saleh responded that Greg Knapp would have major input with LaFleur, the QB Coach and the QBs. JD had to allow Saleh to hire whom he wanted or Saleh may not have taken the job or things may have gotten off to a rocky start with the two. I totally disagree with your conclusion that if Saleh has to go we cannot let JD hire another coach. That would be foolish imo. We have a GM who has handled all the other aspects of his job at a high level, and because he didn't make the right hire on his first try, we're going to shitcan him too? This kind of attitude is exactly why the Jets suck, have sucked for years and will continue to suck. The better teams don't function this way. JD should definitely get a chance to hire the next HC. What good would it do to fire JD, and his successor isn't even good with trades, the draft or FA? Things could always be worse. At least JD is fixing the talent problem, and I'm sure that he has learned from this process and would make a better choice the next time. We agree that the team needs to show considerable improvement the rest of the season, especially on offense, or LaFleur should go. If Saleh refuses to fire Lafleur, then Saleh should go. Blaming JD for Saleh's mistakes is ridiculous imo.
Woody owned teams went to 2 AFC championship games. And Hess was like 90 and shitting in a diaper by the time he finally hired Parcells. You're being too kind.
What we need is a President of Football Operations. His job would be to provide a strategic view of the entire operation. The Chain of Command would be complete. That person would have to be a football insider. The teacher instead of the student for once.
