The Browns and Dolphins both just did the tank and build and they're both on the cusp of having one playoff appearance between the two of them in four years since the journey began (depending on how the Browns finish).

So I wouldn't really use those as the model rebuilds.

Ah ok, so let's ignore the Browns complete turnaround from the absolute gutter because they are just in the start of their journey and have only made the playoffs once and will likely make it again this year.

Totally agree, so why bring him here? Because if Flacco does win some games, the pressure to start him the remaining games will be great and you'll have a QB controversy. You and I know that Zach needs to start, but I'm not sure the fandom will want him back if Flacco can pull off some wins.

fortunately or unfortunately, I guess how you look at it, Joe Flacco isn't going to win some game(s). 0-4 last year

Did you know you can disagree with people without being condescending? It seems like a foreign concept to you.

The Browns have quite an uphill battle to make the playoffs this year so we'll see where this ends up. The Dolphins traded away two Pro Bowl players (one 2x All-Pro) for draft picks and they drafted shitty. Which is why they're likely to remain a gutter franchise.

Why do you keep bringing up the Dolphins? I never mentioned the Dolphins once.

The Browns are currently in the 7th seed for the playoffs and while it may be an uphill battle for them, they are in the conversation.

Again, a team that took 3 years to turn around and their third year losing every game of the season

I really dont see how anyone could view this move as anything more than a short sighted, reactionary one...... ALL GAS, NO PLANS

The Browns took 18 years of rebuilding actually before they made the playoffs, not 3.

And if we are at the point of comparing our Jets to the Browns organization like its a positive that is just plain sad. Although I guess we're almost there, 10 years without playoffs.... and counting :(

Do you have to bring up the Dolphins for it to be relevant? They started the same "long term rebuild" bullshit that you think is effective.

The Cardinals fixed it in two after gutting the franchise in 2019 and now have the best team in the league. The Rams did the same thing back when they hired McVay and haven't had a first round pick in his entire time there. Bengals are also rebuilt in two.

The common denominator among a lot of these quick rebuilds are rookie quarterbacks that excel immediately and meshes with a young coach.

That hasn't happened here and it doesn't help that most of the roster is trash after our GM has had 2.5 offseason's to add better players.

Losing a 6th round pick for a rental on Flacco isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but the fact that we have to make this move is an indictment of JD's thought process entering this season. Why wouldn't you have a disposable veteran QB in case your rookie isn't ready, or needs to watch from the sideline a spell?

This isn't some "I could do better!" rant, since normally the leadership of a pro sports franchise does know better than the fans; they know the game better, they know the players better, and they're spending more than 40 hours a week on it. But it seems like with the Jets the fanbase routinely knows better than the team's actual leadership. The fanbase overwhelmingly thought hiring Gase was a bad idea, and lo and behold, it was. The fanbase thought not having a veteran on the roster was a bad idea, and lo and behold, it was. The Jets would be better off if decisions were made via a Twitter poll.

When's the last time the Jets organization made a decision most of the fanbase panned, and the organization turned out to be right?

There's no doubting that there are a lot of impatient Jets fans who are starving for wins. I'm hoping they brought him here as insurance, to back up White, and perhaps help Zach in some way. I could also see them bringing them here just to get another win or two to help take pressure off of Zach, the rest of the team and the CS, and maybe even to help Mims since Flacco and Mims had good chemistry. If Flacco starts and Mims doesn't see increased playing time, then I will definitely want LaFleur fired before the season is over.

If Zach was done for the season then I could see the logic in this move - Give White a couple of games to see if he can become our Minshew/play at a reasonable enough level that doesn't compromise the development of our other rookies. If he craps the bed then switch to Flacco whose basement and cost is probably better then the options of Cam or RGIII (Although McCown is a FA?).

But if Zach's back as reported in 2 to 4 weeks then you just have to suck it up and roll with White & Johnson, guy off the street/other teams practice squad till he's back.

This season has never been about the win/loss record but building a base for the years to come, so trading away any draft asset just seems dumb.

Excellent post! THIS is why JD didn't bring in a vet QB during FA or immediately re-sign Flacco. He was trying to find a long-term backup QB in either White or Morgan. He still might prefer rolling with White, but maybe either the Johnsons wanted him to bring in a veteran at this point for the fans or Saleh and the CS wanted a veteran rather than Mike White hoping that might help save their jobs.

You mention the scariest possibility and that is that the Johnson's insisted that he make such a move. If so we are doomed. I would really like transparency on this event.

Maybe we can trade for him too, he was relevant in 2012.

Did it ever occur to you that perhaps JD was trying to develop a long-term backup QB in either White or Morgan, and that's why he didn't re-sign Flacco or sign someone else? Morgan crossed that up signing with the Panthers rather than going to the Jets' PS. After two months of practice, perhaps White hasn't developed the way they thought/hoped he would and they now see that he either isn't the answer as a long-term backup or isn't ready yet. Perhaps the Johnsons are feeling some heat and told JD that they wanted him to bring in a veteran QB to start while Zach is out.

We Jets fans (including me) are all too quick to be impatient, judge and criticize when we don't have all the facts. It's understandable based on the team's history and how we have been disappointed and frustrated continually for 20-30-40 years or more. Still, there could be very valid reasons for taking the approach they did with the QB situation.

Entirely Valid Reasons for not re-signing Flacco or signing another vet this spring:
    - They planned to, but had higher priority FAs to talk with and thought that Flacco wouldn't sign anywhere quickly
    - They hoped to develop a long-term backup in either Morgan or White
    - They didn't want to have to keep 3 QBs on the roster
    - They didn't like any of the veteran QBs who were available, figured Zach would start the whole year, and knew they had Knapp so didn't see the need in signing a vet to help mentor Zach

Entirely Valid Reasons for trading for Flacco now:
    - They need a backup for White and don't trust Johnson
    - They don't think White is ready to start or be their backup QB
    - JD is sending a message to LaFleur to use Mims
    - The Johnsons don't want to wind up with fewer wins than last season and/or are feeling heat from the fanbase/media and want to get the team some wins
    - JD and the CS feel the team is pressing and uptight, and think that just getting another win or two might help them all relax and play better

The Jets were going to keep Morgan on the PS, but then he crossed them up and signed with the Panthers instead. Johnson may be kept to run the scout team since he's a mobile QB and can run.

you can only have so many picks without cutting some before the season. idzik had 12 and it didn't work out. we have extra picks in rounds 1, 2, 4, and 5 and 10 picks total (3rd and 6th are the other 2). giving away a 6th is nothing. we can get that back in a trade down during the draft if we want
playoff teams do. they want a top tier backup who gets time in the system during the off season. lower tier teams don't. seattle had geno as a backup for 4 years. hows that working out for them? back-up QBs aren't that good or they'd be starters. you seen it with the saints. they gave us a 3rd for teddy to back up brees for 1 year then let him walk.
