Josh Johnson with the ol' 5 year hiatus on his resume too. Dudes about to get a 7th year of service on his NFL pension like a G.
And who exactly would be the savior? We dumped 4th round pick Morgan for White. I for one want to see if White can be a long term back-up or needs to be cut. We have 3 weeks to find out. Having someone like CJ Beathard holding the fort for next 3 weeks would not make me any more excited. "Good backups" like Beathard, Flacco, Hoyer were indeed available. But honestly, when Sam was injured last year, it's not like Flacco did anything special. There was no Josh McCowns who were available to come in here and coach Zach while being a back-up. At least now we can evaluate White.
We carried White (26) for two years, and dumped draft choice Morgan for him. Why not give him a chance to see if he can be a long term back-up over some journeyman QB you were suggesting to sign as a sub for one year? And we got hamulated because of the defense by the way, not because of White. Let him get his first start, see where he is at.
I agree with starting White and not trading for a QB. The time to sign a veteran backup was 3 months ago, for money not picks.
Hamulated is such a good word! Such flavor! And yeah it does describe what happened to the Jets on Sunday.
I get you--Noone in the building knew Mullens better than Saleh/LaFleur and they passed--so I feel good about that.
Who? Beathard? Flacco? Hoyer? It's not like a great mentor was available for a good price and JD missed the mark. At least now we will know if White, whom we had for two years and preferred over Morgan, can be a long term back-up. What would playing someone like Flacco/Beathard accomplish? We did it last year with no result.
I'd have gone with Bethard or Mullins because they both knew the system. Or Minshew because he still has the tools to light a fire under a mediocre roster. Flacco was at least able to give Mims some development last season. Something Sam couldn't seem to do.
We should re-hire Jeremy Bates so they can teach Zach how to walk away and still trick teams into thinking you have value.
I wouldn't even put Flacco in that category, no interest in him. "Good" backups don't mean someone who can come in and win games necessarily. Someone who can come in and run the offense competently because they've run it for years would do a lot for Zach. Like I said before, instead of sitting back and watching a guy run the system and learning from it, he's going to be watching a guy who is still learning the system. There's no justifying it no matter what.
I wouldn’t exactly call McCown a good backup, he was way overrated, played like shit when got opportunity. And mentoring darnold, well how that turn out? Except for the same haircut! I lead toward having experienced backup and mccown was that, so was flacco, they started NFL games with some success. Flacco won SB, so he above McCown! I think only time McCown was good when he stepped in when in Chicago. Otherwise mediocre to bad. Fitz was better by far. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think sitting 2-4 weeks is a good thing for Wilson, even watching White will be painful. But I think he will be serviceable at best. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
McCown actually mentored Sam in situational play and helped him grow. Flacco looked at Sam like he was the fly that landed in his coffee.
True about Flacco, no personality for sure, McCown mentored him to be horrible and throw bad ints. Sorry not a McCown fan! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well there goes our super bowl season right down the shitter. With Wilson out all hope is lost. JD needed to sign a veteran that could come in and win games while Zach was injured and his failure to do so will cost us the season. Plus think about the OL and the backs. How can they develop with Mike White behind center. What a disaster!
To learn from someone, that someone would need to be really good. Like maybe younger Alex Smith for Mahomes. Or Bledsow for Brady. Even Josh McCown may qualify. The guys you named though... meh... I'd rather see if Mike White can be a long time back-up or needs to be cut.
I didn't wish for us to get Flacco. That's like the low bar minimum. But I'll admit the upside is our young receivers will get more action. Both Mims and Moore will likely get more throws when their open. Unless our pass protection is sketchy. Then Flacco becomes useless.
