I hope they regulate FB like big tobacco . Get a warning label this stuff hazardous to your mental health. Plus no accounts to Teens and Minors. And stiff fines if they perpetuate lies guns violence hate and racism. Really get tough because this stuff is like selling dope to kids

Fortunately the government can’t regulate speech, so that’s just a nonsensical demand to fine them for lies or any ideological concept you oppose.

want to require age restrictions and warnings, by all means, have at it.

    Boomers totally ruined it

The government should just not allow Facebook (or any website really) to collect so much data on their users. That’s how they roll in Europe.

Would solve many of the issues being brought up in the recent days

Ultimately that will likely be what happens, somewhat. What I think will happen is that users will have to opt in to having data collected, and have the option to opt out.

obviously the data is why we get these services for free, and thus users will have to make the consumer choice whether to get the service in exchange for the data or pay a fee to use the service in absence of the data. I suspect users will opt for continuing to sell their data.

    Not exactly Blue

Even now FB can regulate what they say on their platform if they want to and doesnt always occur since they apparently enjoy some controversy for big profit$

    https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/24/fac...-banned-according-to-community-standards.html

Even today Facebook will ban users who promulgate violence hate misinformation and criminal behavior

Famously, they banned President Trump for whatever language he was pushing out

You are so wrong on this. We are are all spied on up the ass regardless. It's window dressing to opt in or opt out. It means nothing.

Unfortunately social media companies are engaged in suppression of speech and ideas (which will come to an end the moment someone sues them for defamation or tortious interference and their behavior is determined to be that of a publisher not a platform, thus ending their protections, but that’s separate from the government suppressing speech (though one could argue the government is using the platforms to suppress speech they don’t like, using social media platforms as a shield in doing so).

No, I’m not wrong at all. Whether they find a way to continue to acquire data is not a dispute to the belief that the government will require the opt in as a consumer protection policy.

    Don't worry komrades.

Once they get it sorted out... all you'll see is food pics and life advice from Kamala Harris.

Everyone will be safe, secure and protected from wrong-think.

@JetBlue , no offense but you're delusional. Zuckerberg has been before Congress how many times already with no repercussions because no-one knows what they're doing. I'm a techno dolt, but even I can see without my glasses.

Zuckerberg's bullshit philanthropy with the hospital in SF that he slapped his name on was to try to circumnavigate HIPAA (which is a joke, btw) to target people with ads. He almost got away with it, and he probably will another day, but I resent that guy to the moon and back. He's a white collar criminal of the worst kind and he'll never pay for any of it.

Clearly you have no grasp of what I am saying. My argument has nothing to do with repercussions, simply the government will put in place consumer protection requirements such as an explicit opt in or opt out of data collection. Whether it works or whether social media companies adhere to it is completely irrelevant.

take a breath, meditate and clear your mind, and simply read the words I have typed.
