I did find it a bit odd this offseason they didn't find it necessary to replace GVR. This to me can be the biggest indictment on JD thus far, especially considering that (a) you had a rookie QB coming in and (b) this is supposed to be your strength as a talent evaluator.
You guys know I am a positive and supportive fan, but I strongly dislike Greg Van Roten. He is terrible and now adds a bad attitude on top of it all? Can't wait until he is off the roster. Drops were also bad, I agree. So far, the Jets have done every possible thing they can to NOT help their rookie QB. Drive me nuts.
That just makes what GVR said even worse. Is Zach supposed to float the ball in the air as soon as it's snapped, because that might as well be what he's doing.
Yup. Zach made his share of mistakes, mostly things you’d expect from a rookie but there’s been no one to bail him out , which is what rookies need. The offense is so fucked up right now because they can’t get one thing consistently working. There’s nothing to build on. It’s time to bench a few guys and elevate a few others to see if we can get a spark.
I really think JD was banking on lewis starting at RG. that's why he kept him rostered last year when he wasn't playing for whatever personal reason and why he kept him this year. I think GVR was supposed to be the backup and replaced by AVT. when lewis retired it took away that option.
Van Rotten needs to go period just to send a message to the roster. There doesn't seem to be any accountability except to Mims for not knowing every play in the book or every Wr position. Guys fuck up, they continue playing. Guys drop passes, they continue playing. No one gets benched. Its almost as if Saleh is handing out participation trophies. I also think its time to drop the nice guy routine and become a SOB type HC. The easy going attitude of the HC has filtered down to the rank and file as no one on the team feels any sense of urgency.
This. JD needs to make an example out of GVR. Not only because he's far and away the biggest problem with our OL but also because it's unacceptable to publicly blame your QB while playing like such shit yourself. Cut the idiot. I can't imagine a replacement could be any worse.
If I'm JD, I cut GVR immediately. Especially when you take his comments yesterday about Zach and his play over 3 games. Fuck this idiot. Cut his ass and make a statement.
The sad thing is that there were replacements available in free agency. I am not talking about Thuney either. Guys like Trai Turner for instance. Only signed a 1 year deal for cheap 3 mil very late in the process. Would be a massive upgrade right now. We also let go of Elflein who I am sure could have done better than GVR. Now we are stuck. We cut Van Rotten, he still gets his guaranteed money, and we are left with Feeney. It's just such bad situation to be in right now. At this point no one is giving up their OL pieces, who are playing well. There is really not much JD can do now, because he fucked up before and the window is closed. Maybe after some teams start to tank for a QB there will be an opportunity to trade a pick for a a bit of an upgrade at the position. It's really frustrating.
If I'm Douglas, I'm signing about 7 or 8 practice squad players from other teams this week. And cutting most of our offensive linemen. Bobby Hart, Sua Opeta, Phil Haynes, David Moore, Carson Green, Hjalte Froholdt - this team sucks too bad to not be giving open try-outs as starters to practice squad players all over the league.
Does anyone know what happened with the guys we looked at potentially signing? Would be curious to see if they are panning out elsewhere or was it just slim ass pickings when we needed linemen
GVR is legitimately the worst or second-worst guard in the league in pass blocking so far. It's highly likely anyone else who was available is doing better.
