So my little cousin is a country singer-songwriter and is starting to get some recognition. He's 17 years old and playing out live quite a bit.

    Couple of things:

First he bears a striking resemblance to my son. They look like they could be brothers :D

Second, he has a great voice...perfect for the "new country" that is popular today.

    Does he play an instrument?

    Thanks!

Yes, he plays the acoustic guitar. Maybe, a little piano, too.

I've been on a kick for a few years now listing to a doom/prog rock fusion, I know there's probably a term for it but I've been out of the scene for a while and have no intention of getting back in. There is so much creativity going on in the past couple of decades with these bands and since they haven't been picked up by mainstream execs, their sound hasn't been compromised.

Bands that I would recommend in this area are Baroness, Mastodon (only for the music, the lyrics could have been written by a hyperactive 5th grader), Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Truckfighters, I'll name more if anyone is interested. One band that is new to this sound is LA Witch.

They are the only all female band I listen to in this sub genre, not because I have anything against female bands but there is just not much of an offering. Their first album (S/T) has more of a generic stoner rock vibe to it and doesn't really stand out on its own, but when you know where their sound eventually goes, you can hear the beginnings of it in that first album.

Their second album really kicks my dick in the dirt lately, they found their sound and thoroughly owned the shit out of it all through this deck. It's got a California vibe to it which can turn some people off but it's done so well its forgivable and has kind of a punky edge that makes it work.

I'm trying to pinpoint who they remind me of.......it's not coming to me.

    Baroness and Mastadon are great!

Never thought I'd see LA Witch discussed on this forum... let alone recommended!

Sweetheart band... although best taken in small doses or in small clubs.

Josh Homme should produce them and fatten up their sound...

That would be a great move for them. Kyuss was one of the pioneers of the desert rock sound and Homme knows pretty much every band in the scene, he'd probably take them to the next level.

For some reason I had a feeling you'd have heard of them.

Loved Kyuss... that lead to discovering the stoner scene.

Weirdly... I've gotten to hang with a bunch of the guys that defined that segment. Some of my friends played in the bands I dug.
I loved the music before I ended up in the middle of it... kinda strange wonderful experience.

Getting to chat with Chris Goss was one of the highlights... amazing talent.
I could name-drop some more but I don't want to sound any more douchey than I have already.

In this area I will forgive any shameless name dropping and I'll even give you a chance to one-up me.

I once found myself whaling on the same fat stinky skinhead as my friend Dave Witte from Burnt by the Sun (was playing with Human Remains at the time), Mike Kingshot from Floorpunch, Marc Zeveny from Endeavor and a young Brann Dailor who nobody knew and played in a band I can't remember, all while the fay guy was pulling Steve Procopio (Discordance Axis) off stage by his guitar strap.

And yes, you probably don't know half those names, but all I have are softballs.

I won't talk about snorting coke with Keith Richards or smoking a cig with Bowie.

    I'm better than that...

I love old Black Sabbath. I'm a big fan. The Writ, my BIL when we were teenagers would go, "He's crying . . . is that a baby?" Hahaha. I know I have Black Sabbath posts in here for sure.
