Contracts and Cap question

I think Mangini is under contract for another 3 or 4 years. Let's see how he does this week before we rip up his contract, I think we can wait another year before giving him a new deal. He has done as good a job this year as you could ask but you don't have to give him a new deal yet.


The Jets like most of the teams in the nfl are in good shape. The salary cap is going up by a large percentage and we would have been in good shape either way.

 

I believe we have $25 million in cap space.

 

There is no reason not to decide that Mangini is the man for the next decade and set that up in writing.

He has been a tough motivational coach on a franchise where the players were used to being coddled. The result? A playoff run with less talent than you'd think he needed to accomplish that and obviously the respect of his players.

A smart franchise would say: we've seen enough to know he's who we want running the team for the next decade.

 

I agree but it's probably not necessary to redo his contract after one season. He's not going anywhere anytime soon regardless. I think they should talk to his agent and get a feeling of what it would take but I wouldn't just throw $5 million a year at him because of one year.

 

Why not?

You do that and he settles down and starts thinking about how he'd like to have the Jets look in 4 or 5 years in addition to what needs to be done next week and next season.

When you get a really talented manager, which is what Mangini is, you really want to challenge him to expand his field of view. Giving him a nice long contract makes the Jets his team and increases the chances of long term success, a commodity that has eluded the Jets in the past.

 

Mangini will end up with a new deal.
