I had no idea this was the protocol if a service dog came to me without its owner. I felt obligated to share this with TGG.

I was attacked by a dog when I was 9 and since then, even the tiniest dogs scare the hell out of me. This reminder doesn't apply to me but thanks for posting it boss. It really could save lives.

I've never seen this information before and there's no origin shown. What if it's one of those phony service dogs that some people just have to bring with them everywhere they go, like into restaurants? Should we just assume that wandering Lhasa Apso is looking to have you Heimlich someone in need?

Rale, a phony service dog won't come up to you by itself in the first place as they are not trained. Secondly, any aid you can render no matter how insignificant is aid to a fellow human being in need. Third, you know most service dog breeds are Labs and such. So, if this happens to you at some point in the future, show your humanity by following the dog and give any aid you can. Service dogs evidently are trained to do this.

Even if its just a 911 call. Time to cut out the bullshit and start being humane to each other again..

In this situation , they lure you in the direction they want you to go. In a way only a trained dog will.

    Thanks Cman.

Nobody ever follows my service mollusk back to me when I am in need. It took me a week to make that little vest.

I disagree about what type of dog will seek help for its owner. Many dogs are smart enough to do that on their own without any training just like they alert to dangers like fires. Only a small percentage of service dogs get that type of training, such as those that deal with a person who has seizures.

Of course helping others in need is important, but that has almost nothing to do with internet memes and most service animals do not wear any type of vest.

Dude the snail takes a week to get to the rescuer anyway. Unless you are dying of old age nobody is going to get to you in time.

If it was a cephalopod some can move at up to 15 mph, though the lack of water on a city street may be a problem for them

Checked with a service animal professional and yes, when a service dog without its patron comes to you, they are indeed trained to look for help and lead back to their patron. Not every service dog is trained that way, but the majority of them are. So, choose to do the right thing should you find yourself in that situation.

That's not the point. What if I know I'm going to want a liverwurst sandwich a week in advance?
