I look at it this way: nothing I saw Saturday matches the beat writers perception that Mims was on the bubble because of performance issues on the field. As is often the case they only have half the story. Of course, a few here who don't much care about him compounded his woes of last year and run with the assumption he will be traded or worth released. Sorry to disappoint but last year cluster fuck is not relevant anymore. New regime, new game plan, new fire in your belly, prove what you can do in pre-season, new life. Thirds strings or not Mims showed last night that he can get open, and move the chains with power with three defenders strapped around his waist. Not a good day to bring up the bust point of view. Kid is going nowhere this year. My two cents.
You won’t find a post where I call the kid a bust. The simple fact is it’s a numbers game and despite a great play the actions of the coaching staff have him very much in bubble territory. Obviously that can change but so far it hasn’t. They’re going to carry 6-7 receivers. If they carry 7 he’s a no doubt keeper, if it’s 6 it’s a combination of 2 of berrios,mims and v Smith. Last night we saw Smith in with Wilson and catch a first down. Stay in for white and catch a first down and looks to be the starting gunner on specials. I doubt hoyer is letting him go without a fight. Berrios was loved in otas but been out since so he’s a bit of an unknown right now. There’s going to be a hard cut to make coming up and to me it’s worthy of conversation. On the plus side, this is a bit of a champagne problem. We’re going to cut a good receiver, we haven’t had to do that in forever.
No disagreement from me with your take that he is fighting for the last couple of spots, and I never implied you called him a bust. Although a few did. In my view the CS feels he has more potential than Barrios and even Smith particularly stretching the field so they have lit a fire under his butt and moved him down the food chain to send him a message. His weight loss was also a problem. People laugh when I point out that special teams may very well be the tie breaker, but it might come to that. Quite frankly I hate to see any of them go. It is a good problem to have barring injuries but my gut tells me Mims has a fair chance to make the team.
Personally, I’d cut berrios but I think they see him as a really good fit. Maybe they keep 7 and 2 tight ends. The picture will become a little clearer this week. Next Saturday will be very telling.

The problem is that the Jets aren't going to keep 7 WRs, and if they keep Berrios and Smith, then Mims would have to go. Neither should be kept over Mims. Keeping a backup WR and STs gunner over a WR with starting talent, if not star talent, would be criminal. At worst, Mims will develop into a very good #2 WR, but has #1 potential.
I couldn't possibly disagree with you more. Just because he might be #5 at this point in time doesn't mean that will be etched in stone permanently. By mid-season he could be starting because he is outplaying Crowder, Berrios and Cole. The starting trio could be Davis, Mims and Moore. Crowder won't be here next year and Cole may not be either. You are way undervaluing and underestimating Mims talent and potential. Your take about his asking to be put on STs "shows that he knows exactly what time it is," is a biased, negative, cynical take. How about he's a great team player, and wants to contribute in some form or fashion while he's still learning the offense and getting fully into shape after having lost 20 pounds and missed the first two weeks of OTAs? That's being mature and unselfish and putting team over himself. He's showing that he's no selfish diva who is going to pout because he isn't getting time with the 1s.
