    I actually think it's a good idea.

This thread is supposed to be focused on the training camp updates, not opinions on Zach Wilson's abilities in college and the offseason/draft approach we should have taken.

I will say I was pushing for a veteran back-up QB for the Jets all off-season, and Nick Mullens was near the top of my list, and he looked HORRENDOUS last night. Makes sense that the Jets stayed away from him. Maybe it was just an off night, but he was really off. Very interested to see how White and Morgan look tomorrow night.

I suspect Saturday’s game will have a heavy dose of the second and third stringers on both sides. Particularly those on the lower part of the roster bubble. Surely Wilson will get some reps, but guys like Davis, Crowder, Becton, I’m guessing might see very little time on offense. A few starters clearly out. Moore, AVT, Q, I think a heavy load will rest with the running game.

It will mean something. It will mean we accomplished something against backups. Tell me I’m wrong.

He's looked better than Flacco in Eagles camp though. Although I suppose that ain't saying much. Flacco sucks now as we all know

True story - Mullens has started 15 games. He is 3rd all-time in passing yards in his 1st 15 games. Trailing only Pat Mahomes and
    Andrew Luck :eek::eek:

Which should give the Jets optimism about Zach Wilson, as this offense is clearly designed to help QB's succeed.

The thing is, LaFleur and Saleh knew ALL about both Mullens and Beathard. Do you really think the Jets wouldn't have signed one of them if they thought that Mullens and Beathard were any good? I don't, not for one minute. I think they believed that with Knapp, they didn't need a veteran QB to help Zach, Morgan and White. I also think they believed that they could coach up Morgan and/or White, or if both looked bad in TC, would sign Foles or maybe Minshew if they were released following TC. I also believe that they are looking at this as a rebuilding year, and plan on playing all the young players to try to develop them and see who can help them going forward. They don't really care about the W-L record, as much as they do assessing the roster and developing the players they will be keeping. I believe that they believe in themselves enough as teachers and coaches, that the players and team WILL improve from week to week and the record will take care of itself. If they win 8 games, great, they've learned how to win and positioned themselves to be a playoff team next year. If they only win 5 games, then they'll know they have more work to do in the draft and FA next offseason, which players/positions they need to address, and they'll be drafting high enough that with their number of picks and the amount of cap space they'll have, they'll be able to address those positions and make a leap forward next year. They see it as a win-win. They give their young players every chance to develop and succeed. They begin establishing the culture that will be the team's trademark going forward, and give their fans a glimpse of the team's exciting future.

It's not often that we disagree, but I don't agree with the bolded sentence. I don't think Wilson will be on the field without Becton at LT, especially with AVT out. I think all the available starters will play those two series/first quarter. He will want to help Zach develop, and protect him. What's the point of letting him play with a bunch of 2nd stringers and risking getting him hurt? I do agree that they will seek to establish the rushing attack, and that most of the game will be 2nd and 3rd stringers. That's the norm for the 1st preseason game anyway.

If the offense is struggling against their back-ups, I hope we don’t do the thing when we keep our starters in way out past their bedtime until we get some semblance of success. I’ve always found that embarrassing when we’ve done that in the past. That’s how people get hurt. Rex used to do that dumb shit. Just stick to whatever snap count you had planned. It’s only pre-season game 1. It’s not that serious. Keep it moving.

Yeah, well said, @NCJetsfan! I think that is exactly the plan. Next year add a CB, TE, solid veteran QB, etc. if none of the young guys at those positions step up. It's definitely a process for Joe Douglas. I am cool with that, but I definitely want to start winning and have winning be the main goal ASAP. That should be 2022.

I agree. I think next year they'll be thinking playoffs unless Zach has a horrible year or gets injured and misses half or more of this season. They'll closely monitor the CB, TE, OL, LB, RB and S positions this season. If neither Morgan nor White don't prove themselves this season, then JD will look to add a veteran QB next season with the Jets looking like a playoff team. If they bomb in preseason and Foles or Minshew become available following cutdowns , then JD could move sooner to add a vet.

Just read that Moore avoided serious injury, that's a relief.

You don't need to be a prophet to know how next week will go.

If we look good Saturday is going a banner year with potential OROYs at every skill position. If we look bad then everyone should be traded or fired, from JD down to the groundskeeper.

I know its irrational. You know its irrational. Yet I still cant guarantee I wont buy into whatever is being sold.

Did you watch One Jets Drive? They were on the dudes nuts all season. This take is just factually inaccurate. Just because you thought he was 4th before the media hype doesn’t mean he was ranked 4th by actual scouts/GMs.

Yeah, more accurately, the season started out with it being Lawrence at 1, Fields at 2, and then the rest. Midway through, some people started to think Fields could be 1 and if not, then a close 1B to Lawrence with Wilson getting buzz at 3. Near the end of the season Lawrence again looked locked at #1, with Fields and Wilson pretty even as people began to take notice of Zach. Then from after the championship game on, Wilson kept trending up as the clear #2, and Fields kept trending down, and ended up #11 overall and the #4 QB off the board.

Zach Wilson was going #2 overall no matter who was in the slot, and I would guess that was universally agreed upon around the NFL by February. His Pro Day just confirmed it. I would say it had 0 to do with the media.

How many successful QBs came out of Texas Tech before Mahomes? Wyoming before Allen? Clemson before Watson? Cal before Rodgers? Let that sink in.
