Worst case is he's Ryan Leaf incarnate and despite having a very good arm and a fair amount of talent none of it clicks for him at the NFL level. Ryan Leaf had everything you wanted in a QB circa-1998. He was a better prospect than Zach Wilson was this go round. Nobody was talking about Wilson as the potential #1 pick in a draft that included a generational talent at QB.
There were major red flags surrounding Leaf. Most notably blowing off the pre draft interview with the Colts to go to Vegas with his buddies and showing up late to his private workouts. Wilson is not Leaf. He may fail, but it won't be for the same reasons.
WOW! You have really slunk down into the dark side and lost all objectivity when it comes to Wilson. Ryan Leaf? SMFH.
ROFLOL! I have to give you an A+ for creativity on this one! Yes, Zach will throw some interceptions as a rookie until he adjusts to the NFL, but he is a very smart QB, is very accurate, and with the exception of his sophomore year when he was recovering from shoulder surgery and a broken hand, he has taken care of the ball and thrown very few interceptions.
OMG!! Br4d, you have totally lost it! If you seriously think there are any similarities between Zach and Leaf, you've lost your mind and all football credibility. Sad. You used to be a really good poster.
There's a few posters on here that have gone off the deep end. Kurt and Br4d are two of them. I used to thoroughly enjoy reading Br4d's posts.
Yeah, no one was talking about Wilson as the potential #1 pick: https://bleacherreport.com/articles...1-pick-over-trevor-lawrence-in-2021-nfl-draft https://www.si.com/college/byu/news...clearly-the-no-1-quarterback-in-the-nfl-draft
I’m pretty sure he meant prior to the COVID season. Sometimes I think people in here have their responses ready based on who the author is as opposed to just responding to the content of the post.
oh cool you found 1, guess that makes you wrong by your own notion. https://www.nfl.com/prospects/zach-wilson/32005749-4c82-7119-d27e-724ec33f130b Generates sudden drive velocity for seam throws. Sticks throws into Cover 2 windows with great conviction. https://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2021ZWilson.php Powerful right arm Can make all the throws in the NFL Pushes the ball downfield Accurate passer Can throw a hard fastball into tight windows https://nflmocks.com/2020/10/25/zach-wilson-scouting-report-2021-nfl-draft-class/ One of the greatest strengths of Wilson’s throwing has been his ability to identify and execute against one-on-one man coverage. There was never an issue of identifying the coverage and where to go with the ball, but Wilson has used two different approaches in hitting his deep targets: Driven Throws – keep a flat arc and muscle the ball to the boundary, used to beat off-coverage sitting on top of the receiver by cutting underneath with a well-timed reception High-Arc – high release angle throws requiring immense accuracy and touch, used to beat tight man-trail coverage by taking the top off the defense Wilson has been impressive driving the ball downfield
You got it, bub. Always have to have the last word. Didn't this entire site hate WalterFootball, yourself included when they released perceived character concerns? Now we're citing them again when it fits what we need it to say. Lance Zierlein is also very reputable. He had Trubisky above Watson and Mahomes and didn't give Mahomes a first round grade. I still see how you haven't picked up on posting someone else's opinion of a scouting report is not supporting evidence in the slightest. We have different opinions on his arm strength and you keep trying to use confirmation bias to "support" your point. First with Madden ratings, now with two guys who have been shit on on this site for six months. The funniest part about the Zierlein analysis as supporting evidence is that his pro comparison was Jake Plummer.
I’m not a believer in TL and the reports have not been good. Zach was cruising until Greg Knapp happened I thought Wilson and fields were the class of the crop and would’ve been happy with either. Consensus is where winning goes to die in many things in life.
The reports on Lawrence have been more mixed than straight up bad. https://www.si.com/nfl/jaguars/duva...ltiple-tds-in-first-tiaa-bank-field-scrimmage https://www.sportscasting.com/trevor-lawrence-struggling-jaguars-camp/ I think Lawrence has the highest floor to at least be a mediocre starting quarterback and have a bunch of seasons that look like Josh Allen's second year. They all have pretty equally high ceilings IMO because they all have pretty skill sets for the modern day NFL, minus Mac Jones.
My two cents as we enter preseason. Saturday is a big day for all of us. The thrill and agony of the new season is about to begin in earnest. IMO, the somber fact for the many fans that spend great energy, hope and knowledge evaluating write ups on their favorite QB selection, is that all the analysis done, be it by the draft experts, or by the many writers and fans, will dissipate into thin air and overcome by on the field action in the first NFL appearance. Period. The harsh reality is that the moment any rookie QB steps on the field for his first NFL game, the expectation will be based on the mantra "how ready are you and what have you done for me today". Never mind the fact you are a rookie, never mind the fact we expect you to have rookie mistakes, never mind what you did in college, how many TDs you had and who you played against. Very few will remember that a month from now, never mind one season. That is all history and water under the bridge. Soon no one one will care about their previous accolades. They will love you if you show promise on the field and hate you if you don't. Welcome to the NFL rookie, now show us that you can become a winner for us. That is the cold reality of pro football. Multiply the impatience level for a team like the Jets with a long history of failures and the honey moon period is expected to be very, very short. Tough place to be for a 21 year old. I wish Wilson nothing but the very best of luck moving forward. I expect him to remain confident but humble thru his struggles and successes and eventually grow into a winner. I certainly hope that above all he has mental toughness and thick skin. It will take every bit of that to be successful with his development. NY is a hell of a great fanbase, but patience is not one of their virtues if you don't soon find the winning ways. The clock starts this Saturday. Lets enjoy this new ride.
I cant believe I'm going back to pre draft topics but since everyone else is. There was never a valid reason for Wilson to move up in the draft. At the end of the season he was the 3rd, arguably the 4th ranked QB, behind TL, Fields, and Jones. The fact that hype moved him up to #2 was just a game played by the media to give draft season some more debate. So over the months of talk, not play, he went from 4 to 3 to 2. If "x" number of GMs fell for it, then that shows the caliber of many GMs. Wilson had way more red flags then the other two QBs and far less career data to support a successful NFL transition. He simply became golden boy number 2 - a media darling. Never mind that he had the most concerning injury history, Remember the OSU vs Clemson playoff game? Wilson has never done anything remotely close to that, and that was in the postseason against a top college team. Fields has more talent then Wilson and is much more pro ready. Fields also has a much higher ceiling, almost Josh Allen-like. People say Jones should be rated low because he was on a far superior team to the competition. But so was Wilson, maybe even a bigger talent gap, and his team wasn't facing NFL level talent. He faced slow pass rushers, slow DBs, and mediocre barely above D2 defenses. Jones is a smarter player than Wilson, throws better, and has championship experience. Wilson was a QB that should have gone around pick 10-15. But thanks to the hype the two more promising guys in front of him went in that range and Wilson went in the golden #2 spot. We could have traded our pick for a fortune and still got a more promising QB in the draft. Its just so Jetsy. I'm not saying Wilson has no chance to be a successful QB. I'm simply saying we took the biggest gamble. That is a chance teams that are trying to get over the top can afford to take (like the 49ers), not something a rebuilding team should ever do. (TBH we weren't ready to rush into another top 5 QB anyways). The three glaring red flags of, inconsistency, easy competition, and injuries still apply. Wilson is my QB and I'm going to root on the edge of my seat for him. If he succeeds I'll be happy and all will be forgotten. Heck, if we start out 3-3 I'll be over the moon. But he is going to have to be the next Steve Young to convince me that we didn't take a foolish gamble selecting him.
I find it hard to believe that a man with 21 years of front office experience would buy into media manufactured hype when making the 2nd overall pick in the draft.
