Where's Josh McCown when you need him? Darnold beat him out and it did wonders for Sam

When guys say this for real its when they are primed to make that jump. When its said about a guy who still hasn't separated himself from Mike White, its pretty meaningless hype. Maybe he should just focus on being the best QB on the team first. I love Saleh but that sounds Rex Ryan'ish, which is a little concerning.

Darnold didn't beat out McCown or Bridgewater in 2018. Starting Darnold day 1 was a big mistake.

I have to say when I watched this I was expecting some scout like analysis...If he is/was a scout, he certainly came off like a radio talking head, no analysis, totally anecdotal ramblings and honestly, some seriously crazy eyes (not that it matters) but yikes...

Does not make me happy to post this as I'm a Sam guy and supporter, but just to provide some context here's a report from the ESPN NFL front page article talking about Darnold struggling, so it caught my eye, which you'd think was the write up of a year 1/rookie starter:

Not a great day for starting QB Sam Darnold, who gave up a pick to safety Jeremy Chinn on a throw to a wide-open Dan Arnold. He also had several overthrows on situational-type drills. His first big test comes on Thursday and Friday in joint practices against the Colts when he will have to react to new players and a different defense. How Darnold performs likely will determine how much he plays in Sunday's preseason opener. -- David Newton

    From non-Jets fan perspective...

Its absolutely ASININE for anyone to write this off kid or be worried a week into his FIRST TC. Coming from the offense he was in@BYU to what LeFleur runs, its nite and day. From the concepts, to the verbiage, to the vast playbook, to being under center for probably the first time as a QB, to improving your mechanics, getting your footwork right with your drops, to the timing with your WRs...its ALOT to thrust on a kid who had the weight of the entire franchise on his shoulders as soon as he walked in the building.

It's a process. A tedious, extensive one if you're lucky. And in that process, there's going to be some lows. Probably alot of them at one point. There's also going to be glimpses and some 'wow' moments thrown in there (no pun intended) as well. But there's no denying the talent Wilson has.

Stop letting the media spin the narrative in your mind that there needs to be some concern. Most rookies struggle. Not all of them but most. Rookie QBs especially. He lost a wealth of knowledge and tutelage with the untimely passing of Knapp (R.I.P). That should be factored in here as well. He will take his lumps...that much is a given. But passing judgement on a rookie yet to even play his first preseason game just irks me to no end.

Wilson is going to have his ups and downs this year. That's a given. Highly drafted QB's tend to start these days because the teams that drafted them usually suck and don't really have a better alternative. Zach isn't mentally weak like Darnold was. He's going to take his licks and learn from it. That's why I think the people calling for the playoffs are smoking reefer. He's going to have some great games and he's going to have some stinkers.

All the arm chair GM's are arm chair GM's for a reason. If they knew what's best they'd have a job in the NFL. Douglas didn't just draft Wilson and throw him on the same 2-14 as last year. He greatly improved the team (which isn't saying a lot since last year's team was abysmal.) We went to the AFC championship game with one of the worst rated QB's in the league in 2009 and 2010. Obviously we don't have the talent those teams had but we aren't bottom 3 in the league like last year.

I'm going to enjoy this kid's progress until there isn't any. We aren't there yet. Not even close. You can't go back and redo the draft or sign some mythical stop gap QB. I like this kid a lot. He's a gamer and I believe he will only get better.

Just wondering if that earn spot philosophy was applicable to all positions. No need to assemble the Wilson Avengers.

Maybe so, but I think the reason he sucked was because he lacked the confidence needed to handle criticism and making mistakes.

Is this just a personal belief or there’s been actual reports of this? As far as I know Sam is a pretty confident guy. Some might say too confident based on some of the throws he tries to make.

It's my personal opinion based on things like "I'm seeing ghosts", and regressing instead of improving, and not really ever hear him saying "I lost the game", or "My mistakes cost us". Maybe he did say these things, but I don't remember hearing him. I just get a whole different vibe from Wilson.

He’s not the first to see ghosts. He’s just the first to be caught on camera admitting as such. Sam has way bigger problems than confidence IMO.
