I don't believe that he was an AI - AIs weren't nearly good enough ten or fifteen years ago to simulate the sophistication with which he would engage anyone who even made a meaningless throwaway comment (my first interaction with him was over a decision to fair catch a punt in a random regular season game). I think he was just some mix of spectrum / asshole / emotionally unhinged. I will say that I do not understand how anyone found him interesting in any way - his antics were in fact among the most boring I've seen on this site, as they didn't show the slightest creativity or thought. It was just the same idiocy over and over, ad infinitum and ad nauseum.
One of the reasons I thought he was an AI was that his comments were almost exclusively made between 9am and 5pm Mon-Fri. Nobody who argued like him would go blank over the weekend or in the evenings. My guess was that there was a postdoc overseeing the process at UNC and when he went home for the weekend or the evening the process was turned off so that if it ran astray over the weekend it would not give away the scheme.
He definitely posted during games at least some of the time, since various of our "discussions" (including the first one) were over comments about a play during a game. I remember that in that first one he was taking an idiotic position about the fair catch (I don't remember if it was pro or con), finally acknowledged that no one else (either on the board or on TV) agreed with him, and stated that that was because he was a "real fan," unlike everyone else (which was, of course, one of his favorite moronic responses when he was proven to be wrong about something). I ended by saying "Most normal people would consider the possibility that if everyone disagrees with their opinion on something, perhaps they should reconsider their opinion," and he was incapable of even responding to that. I didn't know at the time that that truly was a concept he could not comprehend. He was one of worst posters this board has ever seen, and it became a far better place when he was booted off forever.
People don't blow off steam to the tune of 20k posts only in 9-5 and games. That's the work of a professional whose duty is to be on the job 9-5 and during games. In this case given that the posting style he had would have driven anybody crazy I'm postulating that the only human being involved was the caretaker for the AI - who only occasionally had to step in and make sure things stayed on the rails, to preserve the illusion that it was a human poster doing all of the rest. Other things that stood out were how rarely he started posts. It happened but like .1% of the time. He was mostly in threads he did not start arguing a point to death and then switching, often to a completely unrelated point, to argue that to death also. UNC had a very strong and active CS/AI program going on in the 00's. I realize it's probably only 50/50 I am right however when it quacks like a duck it is usually a duck.
I went searching for that thread earlier to post a link here but couldn't find it, may be too old and lost in the crash.
