https://www.nj.com/jets/2021/06/jet...t-greg-knapps-impressions-of-zach-wilson.html In a short time, there are certain traits Jets quarterback Zach Wilson possesses that have stood out to passing game specialist Greg Knapp. Chief amongst them, the rookie’s ability to quickly learn from his mistakes has impressed Knapp, a 26-year NFL coaching veteran who has coached 13 Pro Bowl players, including quarterbacks Jeff Garcia, Peyton Manning, Michael Vick and Steve Young. “He is a fast study. He has done a phenomenal job of minimizing mistakes. You’ve got to expect mistakes from anyone starting the first time in any profession, it doesn’t matter, and I have seen very minimal, same mistakes, twice. He learns quickly from his mistakes and that is extremely impressive to see from a young guy. This kid just has IT. He is going to be in Canton some day.”
Wow from darn -old Sam to a kid with "Canton potential" ...really?? Waiting for a Pre Season win first tbh
We all know about Zach Wilson etc, but I never heard the name of Gregg Knapp before. Until just now (thnx, Wiki). And I really like what I'm reading. As a player: QB @ Sacramento State University (3,800 Passing yards and 32 TD passes). K.C Chiefs (1986). L.A Rams (1987-1990). San Francisco 49ers (1992-1994). As a coach: San Francisco 49ers (1997–1998) Offensive quality control coach San Francisco 49ers (1998–2000) Quarterbacks coach San Francisco 49ers (2001–2003) Offensive coordinator Atlanta Falcons (2004–2006) Offensive coordinator Oakland Raiders (2007–2008) Offensive coordinator Seattle Seahawks (2009) Offensive coordinator Houston Texans (2010–2011) Quarterbacks coach Oakland Raiders (2012) Offensive coordinator Denver Broncos (2013–2016) Quarterbacks coach Atlanta Falcons (2018–2020) Quarterbacks coach This man has a whole lot of Football experience (58 years old). What stands out to me most? • 1998-1999 QB Coach for Steve Young (went to the Pro Bowl in 1998). • 2000 QB Coach for Jeff Garcia (went to Pro Bowl in 2000). • 2001-2002 Offensive Coordinator for Jeff Garcia (went to the Pro Bowl in 2001 & 2002). • 2004-2006 Offensive Coordinator for Michael Vick (went to the Pro Bowl in 2004). • 2010-2011 QB Coach for Matt Schaub (combined for 39 TD's/18 INTs and a QB Rating of 93.6). • 2013-2015 QB Coach for Peyton Manning (Pro Bowl + All-Pro in 2013 and Pro Bowl in 2014). • 2018-2020 QB Coach for Matt Ryan. Etc. Etc. Has coached alongside of QBs such as Steve Young, Mike Vick, Peyton Manning and Matt Ryan and heck even spent time around Joe Montana during his playing days of the 90's; Zach Wilson is in great, great hands.
No. He didn't mention Hall of Fame. @patleahy how dare you lol Still one of the most intriguing coaching press conferences I've ever seen (really enjoyed it, I really trust this man right here). I learned a lot more about the West Coast Offense just from listening to this coach; very insightful and detailed guy he is.
I assume that you accidentally included your own opinion in the coaches quote because no coach would be stupid enough to say something like that about a rookie.
I thought that too, but the article does say it was updated, so maybe the original article was more gushing? It did seem like a ridiculous thing for a coach to say about a rookie.
It was on Knapp's twitter feed. I discovered it after reading the article and googling Knapp's name to see what else he has said about Zach.
There was a Steve Young article around the time of the draft where Young was asked how he felt about Wilson or a young QB going to the Jets. Young said after some thought he thought the Jets are a good place for a young QB mainly because they have Gregg Knapp who he described as the best QB coach in the world. I don't know if it will work out with Wilson but this time the FO is doing the right thing by a young QB giving him the support, coaching and infrastructure to succeed along with building a OL, giving him weapons and a defense which will hopefully keep him in games.
find it hard to believe an old coach would say something like that. They are not in the business of making bold claims for the newspaper
Canton? Wow. That is high praise. I would be happy with a playoff appearance and a Pro Bowl selection. That is how low my standards are with the Jets right now.
living in the Bay Area... I sometimes listen to sports radio and he (Steve Young) had got a weekly slot during the season... intelligent articulate guy and knows his shit. His is an opinion that I think is valuable.
For some reason, when I see, “Greg Knapp loves Zach”, I can’t stop thinking of the phrase, “Blue horseshoe loves anacot Steele.”
