BTW, You inspired me to go all in on Temple Reef. Put my Goofish PE 3-6 for sale on FB . Found a Temple Reef Elevate E1 which is far more useful for the depths I usually fish at. Actually got free shipping on it.
Don't blame me for spending more $$.... I already told you I wasnt ready to throw down the $ for something I havent tried yet
Look, I gotta blame somebody.. Wifey doesn't know and I'm sure as hell not tellin. Headed out on Saturday weather permitting. Should be no deeper than 150-200ft. I didn't realize those two rods had the exact same specs and given the choice, I'll go with TR over Goofish anyday. Gonna try 100g-150g jigs to start. My G2 should have no problem with that and I'm sure the Saltist will be up to the challenge.
Still trying to sell that Goofish PE 3-6. Not many offers so far. If necessary, I'll just leave it in the garage until I can move it. My Accurate Valiant came today and it appears to be a challenger to the Temple Reef. Will be using it for inshore on Sunday. We should be under 200ft most of the day for SeaBass and Ling. I'm hoping for a Cod/Pollock or perhaps a passing Striper or Blue to hit my jig. I'll be using my 100g to start and can flex either lighter or heavier depending on the current. The Rod is rated for 350g max which is lighter than the Gravitate's 400g but it has a lower end (100g) than the Temple Reef's 150g so I can use it in shallower water.
You're not going to want to bounce around a 400G jig all day anyway..... what's that like 14oz? You'll want different jigs for those species..... slower pitch flutter jigs for the bass and cod, faster pitch higher in the water column for the blues and stripers..... although blues will eat anything
Headed out tomorrow. SSE winds and 3ft seas w/ little chop should make for a good day fishing. I'm thinking going with bait first depending on how many folks are on the boat. Most jig guys up here post up in the bow. The Capt. of the Voyager always points the nose into the wind no matter what so, I'll be on the starboard side as close to the front as I can get. I did the shady side of the boat last trip and was cold all damn day. So far so good as wifey didn't notice (or hasn't said shit yet) about the new rod. It looks alot like the Temple Reef so she might think its the same rod. I should be so lucky.. I got a decent range of jigs for this trip. Lightest being 60g. Heaviest being 150g. Bringing a speed jig along too just in case.
Good luck..... My intention was to finally get my boat out in the ocean tomorrow. Was fired up when I heard a 65# wahoo was caught at our 9 mile reef today (pretty rare, usually only a couple a year)... that's range for my 17' boat. Just got home from work and was going to hook up my depth finder and GPS, but it's raining/storming, and now supposed to have T-storms all day tommorrow. We really need the rain as we havent had real rain in weeks, and probably one brief rain in over a month....we're approaching wildfire potential (smelled smoke prob from a lightning strike) but I really wish it wouldve held off until monday.....
Might be a blessing in disguise Stink. BTW, got my first hook up using SPJ yesterday. Full limit of Sea Bass and some good sized Ling (Red Hake) in the fridge waiting to be vacuum sealed. Hit on the 100g and we were in about 125ft. Stayed in the lower 10-20ft of the water column. Will be using my Daiwa Lexa 400 HS-P as my SPJ reel for the next trip. Season ends 6.22 and I took that day off just to get in last licks.
Cman posts little tiny ones that no one can see if that counts. I've just been fixing a boat instead of using it
Hey now.... Every now and then I get the picture thing right..!!! Headed out on the 22nd for the last day of Sea Bass. I'll be sure to take some pictures.
Banner Day yesterday. Great weather and the Ling were starving.. Got my personal best load of ling yesterday... 27 in the cooler!
Yes. A lot like Cod just smaller for the most part. If you can imagine a saltwater catfish, that's Ling. Very good eating. I like them better than Black SeaBass and fluke.
So when you come home with 20+ do you clean and filet them right away? Do you freeze it? Do you give it away or keep it all for your own consumption?
