I disagree that Edoga is better. He may have more potential/be more athletic, but he definitely doesn't play as well. I also disagree that Fant would do well at RG. He has never played OG before to my knowledge. The last thing you want is someone learning on the job.
not that it's gospel but pff has edoga at a 61.3 and mcdermott at a 54.2. from what I saw edoga was better overall. mcdermot offers more versatility as he can play OG as well but we are so stacked at OG right now plus fant can play OG whil edoga does a better job at both OT spots over mcdermott which is where we need more depth
What makes you think that Fant can play OG? He didn't play football until his 5th year at W. Kentucky, and then played TE. For the Seahawks, with the exception of one game, played TE and LT, only. As far as I can tell, he has never played it in his life, or at best only played it in one game in 2019 where he played multiple positions on the OL according to Wikipedia. He had never played RT until coming to the Jets, unless it was in that one game. I don't think his skillset and talents lend themselves to playing OG full time.
he's a better run blocker then pass protector. he doesn't have the quick feet for speed rushers but does well against bull rushers. he's a former TE and has split out at TE in the NFL as an extra blocker. he's athletic for a zone blocking scheme like we need. moving him inside to OG eliminates the speed rush which is the weakest part of his game and he has the speed and athleticism to be a pulling guard and get out in front of sweeps and end arounds. it's easier to go from OT to OG for bigger stronger players who don't have the feet for edge rusher speed. it's going from OG to Ot that's much harder. Faster more athletic but smaller/weaker OTs usually don't transition to OG because they don't have the raw power to take on 300+ lbs DTs
If the Jets sign Moses, hopefully you're right that he can play RG, but I find it odd that there has been no mention of that possibility prior to the draft, when they could have drafted a RT, or since.
Maybe Saleh will do what Gase had to....try 15 different o-line combos looking for just one that can actually block! But keep in mind that the 2021 Jets will be playing a whole different o-line scheme, so how these boys did in 2020 doesn't really matter too much. The 2021 o-line will run sideways towards to sideline with one guard stepping back and running the opposite way to seal off the back side pursuit. Left or right. This required nimble, fleet-a-foot lineman. More of a ballerina than road grader. Even on runs between the hash marks, pay close attention to how fast both guards are at going left to right. Also note how often the tackles are in the 2nd level, 5-6-7 yards downfield, picking off a linebacker. Also note the use of a fullback. Here's just a taste of whats coming here:
As you watch the lineman, fullback, and TEs in the Kyle Shanahan offense thats supposed to be coming here, you will see NOTHING that looks at all similar to Gase's run plays. Maybe it's just that our oline last year didn't have the reps to figure it all out before the season started so they ended up looking like comedy cappers. But evaluating our lineman base on how they did in Gases plans will be difficult. Saleh will really have to get them coached out and out there so see if they can work together like a well oiled machine. Should be FUN!!! As I watched these vids (and there several more I can share) I couldn't help but think if Rex Ryan had this type of running scheme in 09/10...wow! I know we DID have the top rated run game but those lofty stats were based far more on the successes of the RB than on the whole 10 men playing a prefect flowing formation.
Maybe Saleh will do what Gase did not do and decide on who his line will be early enough that they get to play together before the season starts.
I was reading through the posts to see who would say it, thanks. Guy is the second coming of Wayne Hunter, Jets need to cut this guys, he’s not even backup material.
june 1st sometimes you look around on who's out there and how much money you have and see an opportunity to improve your team and go for it. I don't see fant ebing cut or being a backup and RG is the only job up for grabs. i'm sure JD has a plan for it
I mentioned his name in here and it was like a subliminal suggestion on a movie theatre screen for soda and popcorn, hahaha.
I came here for the Fant to RG discussion. How good are Fant's strikes? I don't think he has the feet to move inside. From an initial view I'm not sure it is the best transition but Moses would certainly be an upgrade at RT.
I hate playing devils advocate all the time but it has to be done, the groupthink gets out of hand and someone needs to nip it in the bud.
