Gase and Macadoo a close call, Shurmer gets an honorable mention also. Hard to be worse than Gase tho. How CJ and Douglas supported retaining him another year is beyond comprehension.
I only follow the Jets, so given one of the options is the worst coach in Jets history (and we knew he probably would be), I only have one selection to make.
The Jets went 6-2 down the stretch in 2019. It takes huge cojones to fire the HC who just rallied your team from 1-7 to 7-9. Imagine where the Jets would be right now if they had fired Gase after 2019 and the new guy went 2-14 last year and 2-14 was always in the cards for 2020. It could have been 5-11 or it could have been 0-16 but the bad drafting and the bad free agents caught up to the Jets in a big way last season.
Keeping Gase caught up to them in a big way last year. It was a cupcake stretch schedule, the team was awful all year. Anyone and everyone knew Gase did a poor job, tt was an easy decision to remove him, and try to salvage Darnold as a QB. Instead they kept him (all year), while they watched the whole thing crash and burn.
Sorry -misspost there. What I was trying to post was a snapshot of comments I made to a friend on the day they hired Gase. I hated it and said 3 years wasted. I wasn't wrong. It was wrong wrong wrong and it still bugs me now. Sadly I can't add to the non Jets hires mentioned here but that single Jets shitheap hire tops it for me.
I get Gase was the HC and give him credit for keeping the team together after a brutal start, but that 6-2 finish was the biggest mirage in Jets history. They won those games down the stretch mostly on defense (not Gase’s speciality) and largely due to playing some awful QBs. I thought the biggest indictment on Gase was the way his team responded when Darnold got mono. For three weeks his team completely quit. He coached those games like he had somewhere better to be.
The only NY team I follow is the Jets so Gase got my vote. He fucking sucked way worse than Bowles IMO.
Well it was pretty clear from 0-7 or so that the Jets were tanking. Generally when you are tanking you do not want to shake things up because that's how you might win some games you don't have a prayer at otherwise.
They didn't have much choice. HC and DC hate each other is a really bad situation in an already divided locker room. One of the things the Jets do absolutely wrong and have since the Johnson's took over is allocate responsibility on the org chart. The GM should always be hiring and responsible for all the talent acquisition staff and the pro personnel people. The HC should always be hiring and responsible for all of the coaching staff. Health and fitness people are an organizational responsibility but if either the GM or HC have issues with the staff in those areas they should be listened to.
The only way it could have possibly gotten worse is if the Jets won a game. Which is exactly what happened after they fired Williams. So they had a choice, they just chose not to care about the tank.
It could have gotten much worse off the field. You can't have divided loyalties at play in the locker room. That's when the social aspect of the team can be damaged for years to come.
These are professionals, if a few extra games of putting up with Gase and Williams, after putting up with them for almost two seasons, destroys their ability to do their jobs for years to come, they have no business playing in the NFL. (Which is why I doubt anything like that would have happened.)
I can’t vote for anyone on the Jets that had to deal with Macc’s shit draft picks and FA contracts. The worst GM in NFL history. I’ve gone Fizdale.
Not only did I hate the Gase hire, I HATED the fact they were even bringing him in for an interview...
It was a step down that could be measured in a hundredth of an inch. You’d still drown in the bottom of the swamp whoever you favoured.
