3600 passing yards 300 rushing yards 26 Passing TDs 6 Rushing TDs 16 INT 61% completions I would be very happy with this in his 1st season, especially on a team likes the Jets with news coaching staff and new offensive scheme.
For the most part the expectations seem realistic assuming he plays in all 17 games. I don't think he will throw a ton of INT's. As bad as Sam was, the most he threw was 15 in 13 games. I know people will point out that Wilson played against weak competition, but it's not like he was throwing to NFL quality receivers, right?
Interceptions only matter in relation to how many TDs you are producing. 15 is acceptable if you are also tossing out at least 30+/- TDs. When you are responsible for just as many TDs or less as your INTs it generally means bad offense. We’ve been a bottom 5 offense all 3 seasons with Darnold at the helm regardless of his INT totals. Sanchez and Geno had similar issues in that they did not produce enough positive plays for the negative plays to be acceptable.
Going by the standards of the last 4-5 years 15 is just a high number of picks in general, especially if you want to be a top tier QB.
I think the biggest thing for Zach will be how many sacks he takes. Td/Int is big also, but too many sacks says many bad things. From not being able to read defense, not able to process vs gamespeed, oline sucks, WRs not being opened. If Zach is not being sacked then we should fully expect him to be accurate and achieve solid numbers. I'd say if we can get over 20 passing TDs (Rem this team will rely on the run), less than 10 INTs, 65 completion % (Def possible with this offense), and over 3300 Yards passing we should be happy with a rookie QB. Ofcourse if Zach us game ready he can hit much higher numbers, but realistically speaking, I see him learning on the go, relying on the run, and not trying to make bad reads/decisions.
Shanahan offences run the ball a lot and he’s a rookie. I felt 3500 was generous and only went with that number because of the extra game.
And Namath did this in a 14 game season. I believe he was the only one to ever break 4000 in a 14 game season.
that is an unbelievable stat, for several reasons, RPOZ51. as you noted, the fact that it was only a 14 game season, the fact that it occurred so long ago, well before the NFL became the pass-happy, video game offense league it is now, etc.
per your post, @RPOZ51 ....a list of 4,000 yard seasons in NFL History. You were correct, Namath was the first to do it by 12 full seasons....1967 with the Jets. It wasn't duplicated until Dan Fouts did it in 1979 with the Air Coryell Chargers, by which point the NFL had already switched to a 16 game slate. On a side note, it is interesting to see that there are quite a few mediocre QBs on that list of 4,000 yard passers.
Zach Wilson QB'ing the NY Football jets for 17 consecutive games w/o any major injury would be a total success in my book. The rest will take care of itself. Fingers crossed!
Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson, Justin Herbert, Josh Allen and so on take a lot of sacks. I don’t believe that stat is indicative of a good/bad QB play.
This was pre-merger. In those days, the AFL was known as more of a pass-oriented league. It's partly how I got pulled down the rabbit hole with our beloved Jets.

Depends how those sacks happened. Not all sacks are created equal. No one will blame him for an unblocked defender. I will be upset if he has zero pocket presence and can't figure out when to throw the ball out of bounds to avoid a sack. I won't be happy if he has happy feet either, sensing a rush that isn't there.
