I hope we bring Maye back. As JV said he's great at not letting guys get behind him and he's a respected veteran presence on the team. Safety is also a more important position than you'd think. Safety/CB are super important in the modern NFL given how passing-based and explosive offenses have become.
Trading away Sam Darnold was the smartest move he could have made. It made perfect sense financially and it made all the sense in the world to move on from him as the starting QB, whether we helped him fail or not. Not sure how the trade of Sam Darnold can be viewed in a bad light even if you were a fan of his.
Maye has been a professional and balled out on shitty teams with all sorts of issues and never complained. he deserves a good contract. maybe 4 years 40 mil. 2 years guaranteed. 16 mil bonus. salaries of 4 and 4 mil guaranteed for 2021 and 2022. then 2023 6 mil salary and 2024 10 mil salary. with that maye gets 16 upfront and 20 by the end of the year. compensating him well for all he's done. his cap would be only 8 mil this season, 2 lower then the tag in 2022 he'll get 4 mil only and his cap will be 8 mil as well. this total 24 mil for 2 years is guaranteed so 2 years 12mil per year guaranteed then in 2023 he'll be 29 and have 6 mil salary not guaranteed and count 10 mil on the cap, but likely won't cut him as it only saves 2 mil if we did. finally 2024 the final year he'll have a base of 10 mil and count 14 mil on the cap. the cap by then should be higher so probably a good deal. we could also cut him if he declines and save 10 mil or extend if need be. he'll be 30 I think it's a fair deal for both sides. maye gets 10 mil a year which places him in the average for the top 5 safeties in the NFL/ he gets 20 mil this season double what he would have got on the tag this year plus security for the next 2 seasons. he'll get 12 mil a year in the 1st 2 all guaranteed. he'll have 1 cheaper year in year 3 but then in year 4 he's getting 10 mil
really depends if it works out. if wilson fails and darnold balls out in carolina it's a bad thing. if wilson succeeds it's a good thing either way because of the contract reset.
We can't play the hindsight game this early in proceedings. If Wilson fails it doesn't matter a shit what Sam has done, we will be in the loser club once again and looking at a new GM/HC and staff.
it wasn't. No. 6 overall, 3 2nd round picks, Sam Darnold yields 6th rounder, 2nd rounder, 4th rounder
well in short sight we reset the QB contract for the next 5 years which is huge since the cap went down. so wilson + cap money + 2nd, 4th, 6th vs darnold and 2nd overall pick - cap space
Gets rid of underperforming QB for three picks, JD as you know had FA to do with spunking those picks to the Colts, keeping him one more year would have been foolish.
I agree it is far better to start again but of course, as ever, it boils down to Wilson performing or it was utterly pointless. Fingers crossed it is then.
you can't blame 1 bad trade/pick of 1 GM on the 2nd one coming in and trying to clean up the mistake best he can. it's more like give up 1 under-perofmring young QB with potential who is due big money in a year get 2,d 4th, and 6th rounder
Carl Lawson $30 Mill guaranteed Corey Davis $27 mill guaranteed Connor McGovern $18 Mill guaranteed George Fant $14 mill guaranteed
those are mid tier guys, not high priced lawson 15 YPA compared to williams 21 YPA davis 12.5 YPA compared to golladay 18 YPA mcgovern 9 YPA compared to (2019) morse 11.125 YPA and paradis 9.7YPA and (2021) linsley 12.5 YPA fant 9.1 YPA compared to conklin 14YPA JD hasn't splurged. he tends to get T2 guys on much cheaper deals then the top guys. the 1 exception was mcgovern who was by and far the top and only starting center available in 2020 but compared to the ones that signed in 2019 and 2021 it's still a good contract
Carl Lawson is getting 15 million a year. That is not mid tier. The point is until he shows us he's different, he is just like the other GMs who spend on FAs but not on homegrown players. If he offered Maye 15 million per year and $30 mill guaranteed, Maye would sign it immediately.
