right? everyone bitched about how bad the o-line was and how the reason we were good in 2009 and 2010 was o-line. JD in the past 2 years for the o-line made a run at thuney but didn't land him because he wanted to go to a winning team (chiefs) signed mcgovern signed fant resigned lewis picked up elfien on waivers signed GVR resigned mcdermott Drafted 1st becton 1st AVT 4th clark what more do people want?
Welcome AVT! You will be filling a huge hole for us, long unfilled, and I really hope you're up for it. From the reviews I've seen I have reason to hope. As for trading up, I'm not usually a fan, but the OL was in such desperate need of quality, and I was so afraid that JD might actually take a CB at #23, this is like a double win in my mind. Those saying we could've waited need to remember that "hindsight is 20-20", and we have no way of knowing for sure if he would've been there at 23. Moving up shows Douglas has the courage of his convictions and believes in his plan, and again that's a win on two levels: 1. I can't remember the last GM who actually had a plan, and 2. It's a sound one. Now, if he can grab another stud OL with the next pick, I'll relax a bit.
What lineage are you referring too. when it comes to OL USC has had a fairly good amount of success, with some in the HOF and arguably the greatest ever in Anthony Munoz.
Great success in recent and past history Anthony Munoz, Tony Boselli, Marvin Powell, Matt Kalil, Tyron Smith.... 29 pro-bowls right there alone
Every kid we take from usc in the first has been a bust.. it just isn’t good karma.. and that’s not the reason I didn’t want him.. never mind trade up for him. I like big, nasty, thick guards like Ben Cleveland for example. Let’s just hope I’m wrong here
I don't really like giving up 2 3rd round picks, but I also am okay with it if AVT really is Joe Douglas' guy. I'm really interested to see if they will trade back from #34 to get a 3rd rounder back or if they are fine with just getting 3 difference-maker starters in the draft. I'm excited though. I like what Joe Douglas is doing.
I've come around a little on this pick.... Trade really. Like the player, did not initially like the package traded. But then I began thinking about how uncertain this draft is, now than usual with the abbreviated season, opt outs and pre draft restrictions. If Wilson, AVT and whoever is choosen at #34 become studs, it's a win. JD must be pretty sure about Tucker and he better be right.
Big thick nasty guards are not for zone blocking, are they? Ben Cleveland Negatives Lacks footwork in space and struggles to adjust. Ineffective blocking in motion. Analysis Cleveland is a strong, tough power-gap lineman who stands out as a run blocker. He needs to slim down and improve his agility if possible, but his size and power are enough for Cleveland to make a roster as a backup.
Nobody can say JD is ignoring the OL that’s for sure..... Im not sure what he’s going to do tonight but the OL looks a lot better on paper than it did before he got here ....
I’m thinking if JD stays at 34 the pick is probably gonna be JOK. If he doesn’t get a deal he likes with trading 34 he may just keep it, get JOK and perhaps trade back up into the third round. He may be able to use his surplus of fourth rounders or perhaps even trade Mosley?
To me the greatest OGs to ever play the game were John Hannah and Bruce Matthews. Hannah was a nasty punishing blocker who put guys on their back. 9 Pro Bowls, 10-straight All-Pro seasons. Missed a total of 5 games due to injury in his career. Matthews was a lock-em-up technician who never made a mistake. 14 Pro Bowls, 9 All-Pro seasons. Missed a total of ZERO games due to injury in his career. Not saying AVT is either of those guy--just that one style isn't necessarily better than the other.
well the funny thing is a week or two ago the meme was that JD's legacy will be defined by how Zach pans out now it may also include AVT. If he pans out like some of the favorable comparables we'll all be saying how great and smart it was to draft this top ten guy by moving up Now it may also depend on the next pick. Does he see a blue chipper there he has to have JOK, or Georgia guy, or one of the CBs, or does he think not that big of a delta and attempt to move back there are still a couple of lightening quick guys he might want on offense
Not sure that this has been posted here or not. From 2000 - 2019 the Jets drafted 2 offensive linemen in the first round. If you are a Jets fan you know who they are. In 2 drafts JD has drafted 2 offensive linemen in the first round.
AVT seems to be more in the Matthew’s mold. That would be amazing to have him Become that but he def has the pedigree and play at USC to back it up.
