This seems very dramatic. We are the best. Not only have some posters (maybe just one) decided that there is a 100% chance Wilson is a bust, but we also have some posters (yea, just one) who have decided that because we didn't keep Darnold and trade down, we threw away our only shot at building a contender and will now be a wildcard team at best. Fascinating.

Yeah, you can definitely slice it both ways depending on your preference. I just believe that there are better odds of nailing the lineman pick in the first round historically, having both tackles potentially set provides imense franchise stability, and pulling the trigger at 23 may give them their choice of "the best of the rest" - Jenkins, Radunz, Darrisaw, Eichenberg, Leatherwood...If they like whomever is left there, but also have a clear favorite, I'd potentially sacrifice Etienne for that, at this point in the roster construction.

At the same time, I'm really confident in Douglas' scouting skills regarding linemen, and if he sees that group and thinks he'll be able to work equally well with whomever makes it to 34 because Etienne is THAT GUY, then by all means.

And even better in that scenario would be trading out from 23, down into the 30s/40s somewhere, still ending up with the types of players we're discussing, and adding more capital.

This mock is basically porn for this conversation:

BPA on the teams board except DT, LT, RB (although RB at 34 maybe)

We're a shit team and no clever thinking needs to be done here. BPA apart from where we have 2 blue chip players.

This is obviously the wet dream, I just can't see it happening. Also want to add that I'm fine going OL at 23 and taking the risk of Etienne being gone by 34 (he will be). I'm just saying I won't be one of the people who have a mental breakdown and deem Douglas fireable and denounce their fandom because we took an RB in the first round. I'm a proponent of it.

I'm open to taking a CB at 34 if the right prospect is available.

Who said keep Darnold? Personally I didn't care who played QB for us this year. It wasn't that important because this was the year for a full on core rebuild. Any vet QBing us would have sufficed.

According to old timer systems like Parcels, and Ozzy Newsome, at this stage in the rebuild we were supposed to stock our roster with as many blue chips as possible. Get a talented core together that you know is stable and then you bring in a rookie QB into a situation where his chances of succeeding are heavily increased - next draft. Maybe the game has passed me by, but I happen to agree with that system.

We have one of the worst rosters in the league. Not a single all pro to be seen. When we lost he #1 it was a blow. But then the football gods had mercy on us and made everyone crazy for QBs this draft, and the value of the second pick skyrocketed. It was like they said, "here, take this and rebuild your team. You don't get TL but here is your Hesrchall Walker. Use it wisely and set yourself up for years."

Our wise choice was to use it all to reach on an unproven QB with concerning bust flags, who is a long ways from being an NFL ready starter, and bring him onto a mediocre offense with no core in place. We aren't sniffing the playoffs next season so what was the rush to make such a brash decision? We are already making the same mistakes of the past and the draft hasn't even started yet.

This wouldn't be my first choice but I'd still prefer it over going defense at 23 or 34. I'd rather us lose every game in an entertaining shootout than have to watch yet another anemic offense.

per recent reports, the Bears are trying to move up for one of the top 5 QBs...the Patsies are trying to move up for one of the top 5 QBs...the Saints are trying to move up for one of the top 5 QBs....should make for an interesting night, lol.

I hear you REVISIon. Personally want to go Wilson-OL-OL with the first 3 picks. BEEF up that OL, protect your investment in your shiny, brand new QB (who has a small frame) and then go from there.

Hence why JD is a fuckin bad ass, in my mind, so far.

In 2022 we have two 1st round picks and two 2nd round picks.

The second 1st round pick is the Jamal Adams trade, which is a gift that keeps on giving. And the second 2nd round pick is the Darnold trade, which I am loving more and more.

I don't know how you can watch the Browns and Bills... two teams that have circled the drains with us for years... do the exact opposite of this and succeed wildly. They even did it the same year we tried to, except they did it the right way.

I might not agree with you ouchy, but I will give you credit in being so steadfast in your trade down belief. You have been beating that drum for quite some time now, haha. :);)

No, the Bills traded away the Mahomes pick for 3 players, two of them all pros, the draft before they took Allen. Both the Bills and the Dolphins rebuilt according to the system I posted. They used their Tyrod Taylors and Ryan Fitzpatricks while they built a core. This year they will both be SB contenders.

Between the draft before Mayfield, and the Mayfield draft, the Browns had 5 firsts and 3 seconds.

I'm glad you mentioned the Browns. What we are doing is exactly what the Browns used to do. Bringing a 1st round QB onto a mediocre team and expecting him to be the savior. Rinse and repeat every few years. What we are doing is very similar to the 2000s Browns.

Wilson at #2 and which ever OL drops at #23 (Darrisaw? Jenkins?). I don't believe that AVT will be taken as high as some of the mock are stating but he's probably just out of reach. I don't want us reaching for a premier tackle, particularly when we need them to line up at guard.

First, I think you're over-simplifying that trade. It seems as though you're implying the Bills traded out of 10 in 2017 and turned the picks they got out of that into 2 all-pros, when it actuality it's one (Tre'Davious White) and the rest were used to maneuver around the draft board. That maneuvering did result in Tremaine Edwards too but required them to give up a 2nd round pick in the process so I do see how you got there.

What's more important and also undermines your stance IMO is what Buffalo has done to surround Josh Allen with talent once he was drafted.

2018 starters: Allen, Lesean McCoy, Kelvin Benjamin, Zay Jones, Charles Clay, Dion Dawkins, Vlad Ducasse, Russell Bodine, John Miller, Jordan Mills
2019 starters: Allen, Devin Singletary, Cole Beasley, John Brown, Dawson Knox, Dion Dawkins, Quinton Spain, Mitch Morse, Jon Feliciano, Cody Ford
2020 starters: Allen, Singletary, Stefon Diggs, Gabe Davis, John Brown, Dawson Knox, Dion Dawkins, Ike Boettgner, Mitch Morse, Brian Winters, Daryl Williams

So as you can see, there's only 1 person that has remained a starter for Buffalo over Allen's entire tenure as a Bill (Dion Dawkins), so do you really believe that Buffalo had a good team around Josh when he was drafted or do you think that Buffalo made a concerted effort to surround him with talent once he was in the building?

If anything, I think what we're doing is in line with what the Bills did when they first got Josh. Take a talented QB with some concerns that you believe in and think is your guy. Build up your draft capital (Thanks Jamal and Sam!) to give you flexibility to surround said QB with assets on the offensive side of the ball to help him reach his full potential.

Now, the ultimate question is will the Jets really do what the Bills did and make that concerted effort to build around whoever we take at 2? That's the million dollar question.

Good thing I kept reading before responding, this is exactly what I would have said. Doing what we are doing now with Wilson is exactly what the Bills did with Allen.

Also, the real gem here is that his premise is "see how smart the Bills were to not draft Pat Mahomes?!"

First of all I want to thank all the contributors here at TGG that have kept the dialogue going live and passionately strong with insightful observations both pros and cons for the second pick. Soon speculation will turn to reality. May JD and the CS hit this draft out of the ball park on our way to success. Time to unity and to root for a much brighter future.
As for the 23rd pick, that is where it will get interesting for us. Barring a trade up, four OL are projected in the mid first round, if one of those tackles fall to us at 23rd we should jump on him. If not defense will be rich with opportunities at CB and even edge. Or JD might trade down a few spots for another 3rd. Top RB could also be in the cards if OL are gone. All the best to every Jet fan tonight. Stay strong.
