This post is looking pretty good right about now. Was quite an unpopular view at the time, as this board was full of anti-Allen and pro-Rosen narratives that I still don't understand.
In fairness, that entire playoff run was on the back of the defense. Bowles was a HUGE part of that Super Bowl. I was watching the creativity, the adjustments, the aggressiveness....like where the hell was all this when he was here?
Yeah, as long as all he had to worry about was the "D", he's fine, but for that reason. he's not a good HC.
Really impressive DC, but I agree just wasn't working out as a HC. Personally I prefer my HC's to have a little fire. Players respond to that. I loved the energy Rex brought to the team, and I'm real excited to have Saleh here now.
I can get behind lots of different styles of coaches, but they have to be able to run the whole team, not just focus on one side. That's the problem I had with Rex. Yes he was a pretty good motivator but he didn't know shit about the "O", and yet forced some personnel moves on that side to the negative. Sanchez was his pick.
CC I agree with you. the ONLY way that that style works, is if a coach is humble and self-aware enough to completely turn over the other side of the ball to a coordinator who is a brilliant coach in and of himself. Like if Rex had landed a great OC and just told him to do his thing, and that he wouldn't interfere in the least so long as the offense was humming along and scoring points in bunches.
Honestly, I'm not a big fan of that approach either. I want a HC who, while maybe being more defensive or offensive in his experience, has a good grasp of both, plus special teams. That's why I think finding a good college HC who has that kind of "CEO" experience is a good way to go, although it's not the only way. And while a lot teams go with hiring a coordinator, it takes an unusual person to be able to step up to an oversight role for the "O", "D", and Special Teams - as you said, humility is a key ingredient, but it also takes trust, and faith in one's ability to manage as opposed to being hands-on in the details.
I gotta disagree there, as being a good motivator is what it's all about. And Rex definitely motivated both sides of the ball. I think Saleh will have the same effect. In terms of personnel moves, that's what the GM is paid for.
Bowles was always a great defensive mind. Never had much talent here and probably isn’t a HC although I think he should and will get another shot
Just someone who conveniently bumps a thread they were partially right in as if that makes them a guru, while ignoring any threads they were wrong in. S.O.P. on TGG
