Chad led the MAC in passing yards for 3 seasons, and in completions 2 seasons, also leading the MAC in passer ratings all three of his seasons. He led the entire NCAA in TDs two seasons (97 & 99). Wilson is not even close to being in Chad's league as a prospect.
i'm sure it's a factor but people aren't going crazy over it. if that was the case dorsey would have took darnold over baker. of course past success is a way to gauge the draft same thing goes to building a team. but it's not the end all be all and it's not just mahomes. every stud and every bust has affected the way scouts think. just like any resoning
Aaron Rodgers wasn’t Aaron Rodgers when he came out of Cal. He had a very robotic throwing motion that was thought to him by Coach Jeff Tedford. He held the ball close to his ear like a kid at Christmas trying to guess what’s inside the gift wrap box. This motion affected his deep ball accuracy. Wilson throwing motion is the antithesis of that.
the sideline throws from opposite hash mark. several break downs have been posted of him making those throws in tight winds with zip
I know the type of motion you are talking about, Legler82. It reminds me of how Steve Spurrier used to have his QBs at UF throw the ball. Matthews, Dean, Wuerffel all had that "Ball already cocked and held by the earhole" set-up before they would being their throwing motion. Good catch.
Again, the absolute best non-QB is orders of magnitude less impactful than a good QB. And where you can get a good FQB prospect varies from draft to draft, dependent on your draft position - or your ability to change that - and the needs of other teams ahead of you. If good QBs were available to every team every year they wouldn't be in such high demand. The Jets need a QB NOW, not next year or the year after. Perhaps, if they had acted early in FA they might've been able to sign a decent starter that they could've limped through the next year or two with hoping that they could get their FQB in one of those drafts, but at this point, whatever QB they sign is going to be chopped liver and the fans are going to revolt as they pile loss upon loss again. And I'm not saying it's crazy to follow a plan where you build up the team talent and then go after a FQB in the draft, BUT...it's not like that doesn't present risks. As I've said before, in a future draft there is no guarantee that you'll find a better prospect than Wilson (or Fields, Jones, et. al.), but even if you do, there is certainly no guarantee that the Jets will have a draft position to be able to get him, or have the assets to trade up, or have a team with the #1 or #2 pick willing to trade with them. And sure, if they wait long enough, maybe all those "IFs" will align, but Douglas doesn't have an unlimited amount of time to get the Jets to be a SB contender. In a vacuum, the "Build up the talent first" recipe might be a good one, but in the Jets specific case that isn't the best approach for the reasons I laid out above.
legler was in fact the guy who predicted Mahomes would be great. I jumped on his bandwagon early, but legler was the "muleskinner".
Fields has something similar. His motion is very learned. It’s not as natural as Zach’s. A lot of people knock him for it. I don’t. I personally don’t care what your throwing motion looks like as long as you are accurate. Rodgers had to make changes because it was negatively impacting part of his game. Imagine if Fields could change his motion like Rodgers did to be less robotic; he’s already deadly accurate as it is.
Rodgers had a lot of time to kill when he got drafted by the Packers. Favre wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. If the Jets had 2+ years to groom Fields I'd definitely want him as the 2nd QB in this draft. We all know that won't happen though because Darnold is out of the equation.
Yeah, I heard he's Patrick Mahomes clone! In fact, I heard Mahomes is watching tape of Wilson to figure out how he can copy him!
In recent draft history, the guys that most said needed to sit have been the ones that have been successful early. So I don’t know if I buy that premise anymore.
u mean guys like Hebert, Legler? and I guess you missed it, but you never told me...what did you think of Hebert when he was at Oregon? did you expect him to be this good, this early in San Diego?? I didn't.
I think a lot depends on the situation they go into. A good QB that winds up on a decent team will do much better than a slightly better QB on a shitty team. If Darnold had gone to the Ravens he'd still be playing in Baltimore.
