is this for real or are you pulling his leg? If true, I will designate legler's Status as "God QB evaluator"
This clinches it. Mel Kiper is a know-nothing idiot. If he thinks that Fields is the best, then that certifies that Wilson is the QB to draft, not Fields.
the funny part is wilson has more arm talent then fields. I just don't see what other people are seeing. fields can't make a lot of the throws wilson can, but wilson can make all the throws fields can. The only advantage fields has over wilson is speed and size. 2 things Qbs don't really need in the NFL. but every NFL QB needs to be smart and make quick good decisions.
^^^This 100%. Arm strength only matters in that you need the meet a certain thresh hold to play in the league...no doubt about that....or as NC put it, you just need to be able to make ALL or damn near all of the throws that a successful NFL QB is expected to be able to make to keep NFL defenses as honest and off-balance as possible..or put another way, just force them to defend as much of the field as possible....a QB with a pop gun arm is obviously incapable of doing that.....HOWEVER, so long as a QB has the requisite arm strength to be able to make those throws, the most important skill is his ability to quickly and accurately process what he sees in front of him (both pre-snap AND post snap) and to be able to make rapid AND sound decisions....and then to have the accuracy to realize those sound decisions. The media and some fans get way too caught up in arm strength.....a guy does NOT need a rocket for an arm, or the ability to throw the ball 70-80 yards in the air or to be able to throw the ball through goalposts while he is kneeling at the 50 yard line (as I recall Kyle Boller was able to do, lol). 1-Decision making/intellect 2-Accuracy 3-Requisite arm strength to at least make most NFL-level throws. Those are the most important three attributes for any NFL QB. They are all vital. If I had to compromise though, I will take a QB who excels at the first 2 with avg. arm strength, over a guy like JaMarcus Russell with a canon for an arm who has a low football IQ OR who can't hit the broadside of a barn with his throws.
Doesn't matter to me. I don't know that the poll really matters, but some might want to keep it and know a good reason for keeping it.
Darnold needs to do what Allen did and make the 10k throws this off-season to both get the hitch out of his delivery and also get the muscle mechanics of planting his feet properly before he throws down. He's got the leadership and professionalism thing down off the field, he needs to match that on the field.
If you can't see the difference, then just maybe you don't know as much about football as you think you do.
Agreed, but in all due fairness to Fields, I do wish that Wilson had a stronger frame. Fields definitely has that advantage.
I don't think a clear majority of the experts prefer Wilson over Fields. I think a clear majority of the media "experts" think the Jets will take Wilson over Fields. The two things are not the same, since the Jets are quite prone to taking the wrong guy based on the recent evidence.
Panthers and Bucs are divisional rivals. I doubt Tom Brady is in the good information giving mood. Ah, but Joe Brady probably is, got it.
I like Brady and I think he can be a good to great offensive coordinator. But his guru skills are a bit overrated. Teddy was the same Teddy last year for the most part. He threw it a bit more downfield but the results were pretty much the same. Otherwise, he only has one great QB season under his belt. The rub is that it was fucking incredible. But I need to see a bit more before I crown him.
I mean it's rather easily to be cynical of Mel when he analyzes every prospect in the draft down to the bottom tier punters. Of course he's going to be right a lot and wrong a lot. But isn't he saying that who he believes is the best prospect and who will be drafted first are two entirely different things? Mocks are predictions on what team will take what player. Rankings are for which player is the better prospect. Maybe I'm missing something.
Well said! I've listed these traits in that order myself on other threads over the years. I acknowledge that "you can't teach arm strength", but I also submit that you can't teach intellect, and by that I mean an understanding of the game AND the ability to apply that knowledge under pressure. And while accuracy can be improved - as Josh Allen showed - it takes a massive amount of work and dedication to do it - and I also believe that the "hand-eye" coordination involved in accuracy is a natural quality: some are born with more of it than others. As you said: "...you need the meet a certain thresh hold to play in the league" as far as arm strength goes. I'll quibble here and say that to become a Top 5 QB you need more than that threshold, but IMO Wilson clears that bar.
I believe that survey said 23 out of 23 NFL teams surveyed have Wilson as the number 2 QB ahead of Fields, Lance and Jones.
