I was really excited when we drafted Sanchez. He looked so freaking happy and excited to put on that Jets hat, I think even the most cynical of us had to get excited. I didn’t see that same excitement with Geno and Sam. The former was still pissed about dropping to the 2nd round and the latter looked like he was still reeling from the shock of not going first. I wonder what vibes Wilson will give off.
You are partly to blame for singling out and labeling a handful of us as QB gurus. The animosity spawned from that is palpable and manifesting itself in different ways.
Sam has had terrible luck in the NFL so far, and people forget that it actually started on draft night. He dressed in a Brown tie and color coordinated to clearly go to Cleveland. Instead dropped to #3 to the Jets. Zach Wilson will start out as the first player on the stage after knowing he will be a Jet for awhile now. Hope his first pass in the NFL is a touchdown instead of a pick 6!
I lost my ability to EVER be referred to by anyone as a "QB Guru" when I predicted that Akili Smith would be a good NFL QB....I blame his first name, which I still kinda like. I also thought Cade McNown was going to be a good QB too....
Whatever it is, I’m sure 50% of us will love it and the other 50% will use it as a cause to raise baseless character concerns. Either way, we are all going to be overthinking it.
Great article about wilson off the field https://www.deseret.com/2021/4/22/2...on-really-like-byu-cougars-football-nfl-draft some TLDR tidbits 1) he's a neat freak and always knew who left a mess, because he installed a hidden camera to see who wasn't washing their dishes 2) along with watching film all the time, he would always peek at the camera footage to see if we were cleaning up our ‘freakin’ mess,’ as he called it, or just see if we were doing something funny with the other roommates. So I always gave him crap for that.” 3)But a religious-like devotion to the game he loves — call him a football junkie, a gridiron gym rat, what you will — is a common theme for all who attempt to describe him. 4) because I am just a normal guy. That is something I will always stay true to, no matter where football takes me. I will always resort back to being that same kid who has always been a big family guy and understands what got him to this point — hard work, humility, kindness and respect for others, the things my parents (Lisa and Mike Wilson) taught me.” 5)Wilson on whether he’s still the down-to-earth kid from Draper: “Yeah, no doubt. You have to have that passion and drive and love for the game, just for the game. There are a lot of distractions when you get to this level and for me, that’s the No. 1 priority is just keeping level-headed and just having that chip on my shoulder to keep improving and getting better.”
Yeah, I wonder what these young guys would prefer coming out these days. I don't know how different the money is from pick #1 to pick #32. Not that different right? So would you rather go #2 to the Jets, or #28 to Sean Payton and the Saints? It is a reasonable question. This year is a little different because the #1 pick Jaguars and #2 pick Jets are completely different teams from the ones on the field in 2020, and the #3 pick is a strong 49ers team, so I am not sure.
Public Service Announcement: Wilson Haters Please Ignore. Like the other QBs who have actually played in the NFL, I give a lot of weight to Warner's assessment. And I appreciate that he can pick out the finer aspects of play - not just in Wilson, but the other QBs he's reviewed. In this case, he does a great job of showing that "innate QB sense" that I've tried to describe without out much success, but to me, this is THE difference that elevates Zach above everyone else, including Lawrence. Wilson may not be the biggest, or the fastest, or have the strongest arm, but he knows how to put all his ability together to its best use, and in this video Warner does a good job of showing how Zach reads what's happening - which isn't the same as "reading a defense", it's being able to see what's unfolding and making quick decisions on how to deal with it - and making positive plays. And while his noting that Wilson has "Mahomes-esque" ability will make any Wilson Haters who ignored the PSA above howl and gnash their teeth, it's a good comparison. Of course, as Kurt pointed out, we don't know if Wilson can do these things at the next level, but he's been able to make that leap at every level he's played, so given some time to acclimate I feel confident he'll do that in the NFL. The only question I have is: where is Part 2, since this video was titled Part 1?
The money is actually more significantly different than you would think. But either way if you are a 1st round pick you were a great college player. Great players want to be the best, it should (and usually does) make them sick to see other guys picked ahead of them. -- Watched an interview with Thurman Thomas once. You would think 30 years and a HOF jacket later he would get over falling to the 2nd round. And obviously going to Buffalo worked out for him. But nope. the man is still pissed off about it to this day. ...and its not because of the money
I know we all feel the same way, but every single thought, conversation, or post for me on this subject over the past few weeks/months can be reduced to, "I just hope they get it right. Please. Please." I've typed out a few posts in the maelstrom that is this thread, but deleted them because, while I may have had a point to make about the minutia, everything just pointed back to that one sentence. Please just get it right. Please. Please.
it's a pretty big difference. burrow got a little over 20 mil last year while the 32nd pick got a little under 11 million.
I posted the below in another thread but it’s applicable here in response to how Warner assesses QBs. One’s belief in Wilson’s arm talent should be what’s most important IMO. He can be the greatest reader of defenses the NCAA has ever seen and it won’t mean nothing if ball can’t get there like it use to in college. Some evaluators have become less dogmatic about over analyzing the mental part of the game; some still are holding on to old principles. The game has changed with the in flux of college concepts in NFL playbooks and the rookie scale.
Okay, then you would definitely rather go #2 than #28. Thanks for explaining as that is a big enough difference for sure.
it’s why I’ve basically been nonexistent for weeks now. Some of it had to do with a week of travel in Florida for work, but mostly it’s because the Wilson/Fields stuff was getting ridiculous and all I really want at the end of the day is to get it right. I don’t care who the guy is. I have a preference, but I also have a preference of Ice cream. I’m fully aware that I can get one I didn’t prefer and be unbelievably happy with it.
