Well, I will say this, our D is extremely far from being an elite unit. It will certainly not be an elite unit next season if we ignore it this year in the draft. I just want to focus on trying to draft elite players this year. After the O-line, to me, it makes no difference who they draft, just as long as they become good. I think next year's draft with 2 firsts and 2 seconds is a great time to get an elite CB and also a WR. Saleh also needs linebackers and edge rushers which I think might be a focus in this draft. LB being harder to fill because of where we draft and the lack of high-end talent. But it is very important we come out of this draft with at least one really good Edge or LB. Have to give Saleh some talented front 7 players to fit his scheme. O-Line and front 7 are the two areas I think we focus on in this draft. Later rounds, maybe we add a WR and/or RB.
Found a Sports Illustrated story about Gettleman from 2016 that describes the concept but had never seen or heard it used before. Are you really a Giants fan?
Definitely not. I’m as die hard a Jets fan as can be. Just always found that term in describing OL kinda funny that’s all
Honestly, based on the way most mocks have been going, if I'm trading up, I'd probably rather do it to go from 34 back into the first round since I can see a lot of those teams in the 26-32 range plucking OL help. In particular, I'm looking at the Saints at 28. They're depth has been compromised due to the cap and I really can see the Packers and Chiefs looking at OL.
I think Saleh can turn this unit, even as it stands now, into a top 15 unit. Obviously we still need major help at CB but drafting one at 23/34 or signing a guy Nelson would put that unit into an ok spot IMO. I don't think his scheme needs a super high pick at LB to succeed. Most of the guys SF used since Saleh became DC (2017), have been 3rd round picks or later. I could definitely see us keeping with that theme and taking a guy with one of our 3rds this year but I personally wouldn't be a fan if they used a 1st or 2nd on a LB.
Very disappointed in TGG. Standards are definitely slipping. I can't believe it took until page 2 for this.
Saleh needs speed on defense. That's what a lot of it is built around. Nobody ever said he needs a super high pick at LB to succeed. But he does need a certain type of player to fit his system. & I just really like the LB from ND and wished we were in a position to draft him. We are not because of our need at O-Line and we would have to trade up. I talked about the big separation of talent between the top 5 O-linemen and the rest. LB is a very difficult position to fill in today's game. I like the Notre Dame LB and if we had an O-Line and that LB was sitting there when we pick, you grab him in a heartbeat since he is a perfect fit for Saleh's system. The guy is rocketing up the draft boards because he's one of those hybrid freak athlete types that can cover, tackle and rush the QB at a blazing speed. Mosely can't do that, especially after 2 years off. There really are only 2 LB's I like in the first 2 rounds and both will probably be long gone by 23. I also like Phillips (more of an edge) from Miami and would take him at 23 if the top 5 O-Lineman are gone. But now Phillips is moving up the draft boards. I'm looking at this as a 2 year drafting process. So I'm good with whoever we draft this season as long as most turn out to be good.
pete werner and cameron mcgrone are 2 guys i like a lot in the mid ronuds and both fit the system perfectly. jabril cox isn't bad either and tony fields could be depth as a 6th rounder
