The first thing to notice is we loaded up on WRs. we signed 2 of them so now have a pretty solid top 4. even though 1 was on a 1 year deal he's a WR4 and can be resigned if it works out. I don't think he drafts a WR early. he wasn't loaded at WR when he won in balt or philly either and SF's system doesn't require a stud WR. Seems both JD and saleh prefer a group of solid guys over having superstars. We also didn't improve the o-line. the starters for 2021 will be the same as 2020. Becton, Lewis, McGovern, GVR, Fant. with the main backups being edoga, clark, and Feeny. I think he'll draft some o-line like he did with becton and build through the draft. He likes mcgovern at C so likely a RT and/or an OG Outside of that maybe a TE depending on where things fall. RB is 50/50 he did draft perine. we have him ty, coleman, and adams who we resigned. Most of the focus will likely be defensive players to fit salehs scheme and likely back 7 heavy. We also signed a safety and tagged maye and have davis so i'm thinking more CB then safety but probably both. The d-line is really good as it stands. I think JFM and Lawson on the outside with Q and foley on the inside is a really good front 4. we also have depth with zuniga, hall, and shepard. Maybe we take 1 d-lineman tops. Also after the darnold trade and with the rumors going around I think it's forgone that wilson is the pick at 2 That puts the jets needs at Tier 1 needs QB, O-line, LBer, DB Tier 2 TE, RB, D-line, WR Round 1 Pick 2: Zack WIlson QB v2 pick zach wilson nothing changes here between drafts. wilson is the pick for me and it seems for the jets as well. Round 1 Pick 23: CB Caleb Farley V2 pick Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah Originally I had JOK here but his tackling concerns me. Instead i'll switch it to CB to grab caleb farley. he may not burst out of the gate but he has the ability to be a CB1 in year 2 or 3. very fluid athlete who played many positions and has great man and press skills but needs to work on zone skills. Although if collins falls to 23 it would be hard to pass on him I just don't see it happening Round 2 Pick 2 (34OA): Jalen Mayfield OL V2 pick Alijah Vera Tucker OL Originally had Alijah Vera Tucker here but i'm liking mayfield a lot. Will be our future RT and in the meantime can play OG to start as a rookie. should beat out GVR for the RG spot. not an overly strong guy but athletic and good for our blocking scheme Round 3 Pick 2 (66OA): Cameron Mcgrone LB V2 pick tyson campbell Originally I had campbell here but with me taking a CB at 23, now the bigger need is LBer. Mcgrone is a 3 down sideline to sideline LBer who's relentless and can shoot gaps and a tackling machine. his coverage skills haven't been tested much especially in zone but he's fared well against RBs and TEs in man. could be the anchor of our defense for years Round 3 Pick 22 (87OA): Rachard Wildgoose CB V2 pick same It's no secret that we need CBs. right now our group consist of 2 young 6th rounders (bless and hall) and 2 UDFAs guidry and jackson. so double dipping just makes sense here. wildgoose . he's a smart and saavy athletic and perfect as a slot CB for our defense. Round 4 Pick 2 (108OA): Hunter Long TE V2 pick same Perfect to add with herndon and hopefully move on from griffen. Round 5 Pick 2 (147OA): James Wiggins S V2 pick same A versatile safety who can play either position and with only 3 on the roster We will draft one. This is probably more of a me pick. IDK if JD loves this guy but I sure do. can play slot CB, ether safety position. Strong and fast and a great locker room guy. checks all the boxes. Hey JD if you read the forums check this guy out. I'd love him on the jets Round 5 Pick 10 (155OA): D'Wayne Eskridge WR V2 pick same A day 1 starter on special teams who is relentless and can be a returner and a gunner. never takes plays off. a former CB who switched back and forth between CB and WR so he has a defensive mind but plays gritty and tough as a WR with a good route tree and strong hands and can be a slot guy for lafleur and take over crowders spot eventually Round 6 Pick 2 (187OA): Javian Hawkins RB V2 pick same A pure speed back who's electric with the ball in his hands. also a good reciever out of the backfield. fits the mold of what a RB should do in the shannahan offense. much better then his draft spot says but he's not given much love Round 6 Pick Pick 42 (227OA) Tony Fields II OLB V2 pick same Jets are still weak at LBer so taking a guy they can mold into a starter here makes sense with the last pick. a speedy athletic high motor rangy guy who lacks size but would be perfect in zone as the WILL. will bolster special teams as well Projected lineup QB Wilson/Morgon/white RB Hawkins/Adams/Ty Johnson/Coleman/Perine FB Wesco (TE) TE Herndon/Long/Kroft OT Becton/Fant/Edoga OG Mayfield/Lewis/GVR/Feeny C Mcgovern WR Mims, Davis, Crowder, Cole, Eskridge DE JFM, Lawson, curry DT Q, rankins, foley OLB Cashman, Davis, Fields MLB Mosley, mcgrone CB Farley, Bless, Hall, Guidry, Wildgoose, jackson S Maye, Davis, Joyner, Wiggins
I don’t believe either of your OL picks will be there in the 2nd round. I’d rather either trade back at 23 and get and extra 2nd/3rd rounder or take the best OL at 23 and see who falls down to 34 and start playing BPA. But your mock is better than most IMO.
half of the top 4 picks are offense, half the top 6 picks are offense. half the draft is offense. it's pretty balanced we've put a lot into the line already. were also taking a lineman and QB in the top 3 picks we have. but we are switching to a 4-3 defense, new scheme and need to remake the defense. mayfield will be there. vera tucker may not be so I switched them out. I wouldn't mind a trade back at all
@GasedAndConfused Yea that's what I mean. 3 of our first 5 picks are on defense. That's not the way I would personally go. I understand the idea of balance, but our roster, as currently, constituted, is completely heavy in favor of the defense. We need to focus on the offense early. I like the Fairley pick and Mayfield at 34. But I can not get behind the next two picks - McGrone and Wildgoose. Those picks have to be used to address the offense and our lack of playmakers.
our roster right now is way more heavy on offense. we used our 1dt on a LT last year and signed 3 new lineman (fant, mcgovern, and GVR) plus extended lewis. we used our 2nd last year on a WR and just signed 2 more of them including 1 to a pretty big contract. our number 2 OA pick is going to offense (QB) we signed some depth guys too for the o-line and TE and RB. Meanwhile on defense yes the d-line is stacked hence why I didn't draft any but the back 7 is hurting. we have a new system transitioning from a blitz heavy 3-4 to a zone heavy 4-3. right now our starting Lbers are a guy who hasn't played in 2 years and never played in a 4-3, a former 1st round bust free agent on a 1 year deal, and a 5th round player going into year 3 who has missed more then half the games due to injury. then we have 0 depth at LBer behind that. in the secondary our top 4 Cbs are a 6th rounder in year 2, a 6th rounder in year 3, and 2 UDFA going into year 2. At safety we have maye but he is on a 1 year deal, and we signed joyney who is also on a 1 year deal and we have davis who is a 3rd rounder going into year 2 but didn't impress as a rookie. Thats pretty bad. saleh needs players to install in his system. in this draft mcgrone provides depth as well as being the future MLB and running the defense. hill adds depth at Lber and a special teams boost. and we get 2 CBs to round out the top 6 1 of which hopefully becomes a CB1 and another who hopes to be a CB3. plus we get safety depth in wiggins who can hopefully replace joyner or maye next season as a starter. for offense we get our FQB, we get a future RT who can start at OG as a rookie and stay there until we move on from fant. we also get a TE2 to pair with herndon, a future slot WR who can return punts and kicks as a rookie and be a WR5. a homerun RB perfect for the offense we will be running. it's building a solid well rounded team and not investing too much in 1 spot and leaving big holes elsewhere.
Overall, I like it. I would maybe swap out Wildgoose with another offensive player with that Seattle 3rd though. I know we're thin at CB right now but you add Farley and this group becomes decent enough to not be a huge liability next season IMO, plus there are still some vet CB's available that we could add (Nelson, Sherman, etc.). I would rather use that pick to build around Wilson over taking another shot at CB.
I'd take that draft all day long. Not sure many of those selections will be around at the time of the Jets pick but it doesn't take much for a few players to fall.
depends how it falls. i'm ok passing on wildgoose. 1 CB may be enough for now. if a guy like walker little falls to the 3rd i'd happily take him.
Nice overall job but I think the other Conor--Conor McDermott is a keeper unless he's regressed in the off season.
we signed him back for 1 more year but he's not a starter. he's a depth guy. he could stick around depending on who we draft and who we keep but I'm ok with him walking
