Well Wilson isn’t reckless like that, I just meant he’s good at improvising and won’t hesitate to give his receiver a shot in 1 on 1 situations (which I like personally). Similar to Favre in a good way. He’s got the Aaron Rodgers/ Favre/ Mahomes type qualities but I just don’t know if he’s as gifted as them. It would be pretty damn hard to expect someone to be as good as them obviously. I just meant I get why people might like Wilson more than Fields because of these reasons...He’s intriguing to me but far from a sure thing.
It’s really hard to gauge how reckless he is or isn’t based on the level of competition. There are too many jump balls on his tape for my liking.
I guess, but if you know your receiver is better than the DB then by all means chuck it up. Deep ball INT’s aren’t the worst things in the world anyway. It’s hard to say how this will work for him in the NFL, but it’s hard to fault him for doing it when it worked most of the time, bad competition or not
None of these QBs are. Much depends on the situation they wind up in regarding coaching, talent, etc. Darnold may not ever be an above average QB, but he was damn sure better than what he got to show here. I'll say this: I'm looking forward to seeing if Lawrence can overcome the shitshow in Jacksonville. This will show whether a "generational" QB can make a big difference, or maybe it will show he isn't as great as he's been touted.
If you look at Wilson's level competition compared to the talent around him he played much tougher competition than did Jones, Field or Lance. Ohio State grossly outmatched it's opposition in every game except against Alabama. Playing QB at OSU or Alabama was essentially the equivalent of playing a North Dakota State schedule in terms of talent disparity. Wilson played games against two top 25 teams where BYU was at a huge talent disadvantage. Wilson was the only reason keeping them in many games this year. This argument that Wilson's schedule makes him unworthy is a red herring as the talent around Wilson was simply not very good. Compare his weapons to that of OSU or Alabama. It is all relative. You can see how Mac Jones did in his first pro day when he loudly complained how tough it was not having his 3 superstar Wr's to throw to in his pro day.
I agree... I personally would rank them Lawrence- Fields - Wilson I like Wilson a lot, just think Fields is a better prospect overall. It’s all been discussed a bunch of the reasons why, but overall he was highly touted forever and never did anything wrong to get knocked down to me.
I’m not arguing this point at all. BYU had good receivers though relative to other team’s DB’s. Still though, it’s easier for an elite QB to tear through weaker competition all things being equal in my opinion. Like if you put Mahomes on Ohio State or BYU vs the same teams they played, I think he would shine even more at BYU just because the team speed and skill on the other side will be generally worse if that makes sense...even if the guys you’re playing with aren’t as good either. You won’t have NFL prospect rushers coming at you week in and week out even with better blocking.
That's just not true considering BYU recruits near a lower Pac-12 level, often have a much more experienced team and have a complete stranglehold on any talent that comes out of the LDS community. They are also one of a handful of schools that recruit any pacific island talent versus schools like UTSA that has to compete with the entire country on Texas prospects. It's easily verifiable if you look at the competition they usually match up against every year and how different their schedule was this year because of Covid (middle to bottom tier G5 schools all year long). How many pacific island players do you ever see playing at Houston or Western Kentucky? Which team did they play where they didn't have the best team on the field by at least a couple notches?
come on byu's olline regularly dominated its opponents, their RB avg 7.5 ypc, and DBs consistently played 10-15 yards off of byu's receivers they were favored in every game this season https://www.vegasinsider.com/college-football/teams/team-page.cfm/team/brigham-young
I think the biggest disconnect between us Wilson “doubters” vs the “believers” is the arm talent. When you believe a guy has elite arm talent, you tend to be more forgiving. Red flags become yellow. It truly cures a lot of ills. This is how guys like Jay Cutler and Jeff George get drafted super high and get multiple chances throughout their careers. If I believed, like some, Wilson had Mahomes/Rodgers type arm talent, I wouldn’t be as concerned about his size, injury history, level of competition, propensity for throwing jump balls...etc...etc. In the off platform thrower QB spectrum he is much closer to Sam to me than he is to those elite guys.
I agree that Wilson plays very instinctually but im not sure its for the better. Far more than less of the examples used to signify his ability to improvise are bad decisions & Ints in the NFL.
extensive breakdown of fields, including his work pre-snap https://www.ganggreennation.com/202...ds-qb-ohio-state-new-york-jets-2021-nfl-draft
Call me crazy, I am not totally convinced that JD and Jets are so set on picking Wilson despite the reports. I mean why would he lean one way or another to expose other teams. Could be a ploy. Could be a bluff. When it comes to the decision time on draft day, they’ll make the right decision.
The “mental” part of the game will be too much for Fields the “slow processor”. He needs to be utilized like “Cam, Vick and Lamar”.
I don’t know either - it’s a tough thing to project to the next level. The question is if he will be smart enough to learn what chances he can and can not take in the NFL vs what he could at BYU. I don’t think you can automatically assume that some of his things he “got away with” at BYU are a negative attribute. He was trying to win games and the plays worked. It doesn’t mean he will do the same exact thing in the same situation at the next level, but it doesn’t mean he won’t either if he doesn’t learn and improve.
I agree. Good points about the mental aspects. Whatever JD chooses, hope he gets the right guy for the Jets.
Yeah. It's always so disheartening to read those comps. I like Wilson and Fields. If Wilson is the choice then I'll excitedly root for him to be what we all want the player selected at #2 to be. But man, it makes me literally sigh when I read anyone discussing comps for a player that align more to aesthetics like than actual football ability.
