Brees WIlson Brad Johnson Kurt Warner Favre Steve Young Rypien Hostetler Montana Thiesmann Staubach All drafted outside of the first round and won. I'm sure there are more who have just made it though. EDIT - You can go through this link and pick out all of the ones who were not drafted in round 1 and have played in the Superbowl http://www.drafthistory.com/index.php/superbowl_quarterbacks/
Favre and Brees were drafted 32nd and 33rd (basically first rounders) Staubauch special circumstances and Steve Young 1st round supplemental. Either way a very short list. Since 1980 33 first round pick QBs made the Super bowl, if I counted correctly.
how about 2001- Trent Dilfer & Kerry Collins. Both 1st round picks, yet both sucked and were on their 2nd or 3rd teams I dont think you can really make a conclusion. especially since most superbowls in the last 20 years have had a 6th round pick QB in it, and to conclude you need a 1st rounder, you need to "omit" that. -- there are lots of ways to win. By the end of the month, the Jets will have drafted more 1st round QBs than anyone in the last 10/15 years. And it ain't working, we suck.
I went down the YouTube rabbit hole and I really like how quickly Zack appears to process things and like his ability to improvise. He had a good o-line but on paper seems like someone who could adapt to not having the greatest o-line. It’s kind of weird how all the talk was how Trevor is this generational talent. To now some sports pundits are Zach is better or pretty even. You don’t get the impression that there’s this huge gap between them. If Trevor is this generational talent how can that be? lol
Because Trevor is not generational. There might be 3 QBs better in this class alone. I would definitely take Wilson and Lance over TLaw. Maybe Fields too.
Yes, of course he would've had a "very rough start" with the Jets, but he would've still been much better than Darnold or anyone else. In fact, there's a fair chance he would've been good enough to save Bowles's job and we never would've had to endure the Gase Debacle - although it would've meant being stuck with Bowles for who know how long, and despite his success with TB that didn't prove that he's a good HC or ever will be. And no, I'm NOT saying that all you need is a great QB to win. But if you don't have one, it makes it MUCH harder to.
IMO the draft order versus SB wins videos are mostly empty statistics and discounting the fact that it takes not just a great QB but both a great QB AND a great team to win the SB. So when media in a vacuum look at QB position drafted versus SB won they are discounting the positive effects of having been drafted by a better team in the development of a QB. Also better coached teams obviously don't draft that high because they know how to build a winner thru talent, but when a gem QB falls on their laps later in the draft, they run to the podium and coach him to become a winner almost instantly by providing him with a great supporting cast. I believe great ones like Mahomes, Rodgers, Montana, and many others were blessed with natural talent and with the benefits of a stellar supporting cast around them early on to get the most out of their talents. While potentially other great QB such as Luck or Marino were never provided the opportunity to play behind a superior team around them. Elway in Denver was one that had to endure some rough patches until the team build around him. Jets better learn the lesson once and for all that no matter which QB we draft on the 29th, second pick or not, we are significantly lowering his chances of success if we don't provide him with the right coaching and supporting cast before we throw him to the wolfs during his crucial early adjustment period. Something our predecessors obviously were never quite able to figure out.
It hasn't worked. We have a vastly different, competent GM for a change, a new paradigm for how the scouts are to review and rate prospects, and what appears to be a competent coaching staff. One cannot rationally say it's the Jets or continuing not to work.
Mahomes made KC great, not the other way around. KCs defense was garbage and Mahomes still secured first seed and almost made it to the Super Bowl if a guy didn't line up offside.
He certainly elevated them, but they ripped off 4/5 playoff appearances prior to getting the starting job and the only year they missed, they were 9-7. They were 53-27 over the previous five years. Let's not act like that roster wasn't ready to go.
I mostly agree, except perhaps regarding Marino. My memory may be faulty, but I recall him having very good teams around him and a great HC. He had excellent WRs, excellent OL, and their D was pretty darned good too. Marino's rookie season he had two All Pros on his OL in Bob Kuechenberg and Dwight Stephenson. He had Mark Duper and Nat Moore to throw to and Tony Nathan at RB. Later he had Richmond Webb. My memory may be faulty on this, but were his teams really that bad?
That was not my point but whatever. It takes both. When Mahomes first stepped on the field he was also blessed with some of the best offensive weapons in the entire league period, which apparently you are totally discounting. It takes far more than a great QB to go all the way.
yeah but there are times he can set and throw and doesn't. you'll always be better setting and throwing. less wear and tear on your shoulder as well when you use your whole body to throw
yep. They got Tyreek Hill in round 5, mainly because he was/is a woman beater. Hill had high 1st round talent. Mahomes stepped into a highly talented offense.
They had some great weapons on offense. Their defense was close to worst in the league. They made the playoffs before him with much better defenses. It had aged out just when he arrived.
