It is true that the offense needs to be built to support whoever the QB is we'll draft. But, the defense does need a #1 CB and the closest we have to one is Hall who might be a good #2. And CB's do take a year or two to adjust to the NFL. Revis wasn't a shutdown CB in his rookie season. By the time we're ready to contend, Hall and and Newsome(hypothetically) should be seasoned enough to limit opposing teams' passing games.
No problem. It was an easy mistake to make. I'm not confident in the OGs. That's why we have to get one early, as there won't be much in the middle or late rounds. Rookie OTs used to routinely play OG their rookie season when the team had a solid veteran. They'd play OG for a season or two and them move to LT or RT. I agree that they have more than enough picks to satisfy both. I also agree that the value at CB may drop off more from #23 to #66 than at OG, but there are much more important things than "value." Getting and protecting our new QB should be the #1 priority, and then improving the weapons around him. Nothing else should take priority. Not what Saleh wants, and/or not what the D needs. I just think this year's draft should focus on the offense mostly because it needs the most help. As I stated in a response to you or someone, I can see Douglas taking a CB, WLB and SS in this draft. DE should wait until next year, and the #1 CB will probably have to wait until next year as well. This year we have a chance to add our future QB and build around him, by improving our OL both in terms of starters and in depth, by adding another fast RB to our RB corps, by adding a TE to give our QB another weapon and the D something else to worry about, and add a fast, elusive slot WR who doubles as a PR and who will replace Crowder in the slot next year. Most of hte money and acquisitions were on D. To balance things out, and to give our QB the best chance to succeed, most of the draft picks should be used on offense. Then next year with two #1s and two #2s, the Jets should be able to add a blue chip DE, a #1 CB prospect, a stud LB, and whatever else Douglas wants to add. With two 5ths and two 6ths this year and three 6ths next year, our STs should be a lot better. I agree that it will be a combination of both. As I said, I could live with a CB being taken at #34, but #23 and #66 had better be offensive picks, and 6 of the 9 picks should be offense.
Yes, but if our new QB doesn't develop because JD had to take a #1 CB and another DE to satisfy Saleh, then it won't matter how good our CB duo is.
If Atlanta trades down with Denver I think all the top tier CB will be gone by 23, that includes Newsome. 8.) Carolina - Surtain 9.) Atlanta - Farley 10.) Dallas - Horn 16.) Arizona - Newsome
Taking a CB at 23 shouldn't stop him from getting an OL prospect at 34 or 66. I totally agree that the next QB needs to be protected as much as possible, but that doesn't mean OL has to be the pick at 23.
I respectfully disagree. To have the opportunity to get the best OL left, and to show a true commitment to fixing the OL, within reason the pick at #23 should be OL. If all the top OL are gone by #23, and some of the top CBs are still sitting there, then taking a CB there is probably the right move if JD can't find a trade partner to trade down and then take the best OL left. You know as well as I that there is a shortage of good OL in the NFL. There will be a run on them early as there always is. If JD waits until #66 to take an OL, he might as well not bother. Also, if he waits that long, then he probably should take another QB, because neither Fields, nor Wilson would last long.
