If he loves him so much, then just trade the #40 overall pick for him and be done with it. I think that is fair for both sides.
I agree regarding trading two picks for one, especially with all the holes the Jets have. I was curious to see what everyone here thought. I might do it to get a great OL like Slater, a great WR like Jamar Chase, a great TE like Pitts, or a great CB like Surtain. They would conceivably have a bigger impact on the team's play than the #23 pick and a 3rd round pick. Sam is probably going anyway. I love Pitts, but his concussion history is a real concern. One more concussion and his career could be over. I think I'd take Chase or Slater, maybe Surtain over Pitts.
I understand this. With all our holes, I'd be reluctant to trade up as well. The thing is, I don't think we're gonna get a 2nd round pick for Sam, and one of Pitts, Surtain, Chase or Slater would most likely have a greater impact upon the team's play than the players we take with the #23 pick and a 3rd round pick.
Tbh, I've been wondering if we are going to keep Sam, even if we pick a qb at 2. Anyone think that's a possibility?
I do believe there is a fair chance Sam remains and is day one starter until the rookie gets his feet wet behind an upgraded line that will need time to jell.
I too prefer to either hang onto Darnold, or trade him for a decent pick (a 2nd), rather than giving up picks, even for one of those elite players. That said, if I DID do this, I'd lean towards taking Smith. I know everyone is in love with Pitts, and he's tempting, but if he's going to be used in a traditional TE role, I'd rather have a WR. Surtain is also tempting, as is Slater - hell they all are! - but I think staying where they're at (23) they can still get guys very close in talent to the list above.
If I can get Surtain, I'd have a difficult time resisting. We need a #1 CB and the ones we have now don't have that ability IMO.
I would make that trade in a nano second. With at the least 4 QBs going before pick 9 it would be like getting a second top 5 pick for us. I’d rank the possibilities something like 1. Pitts 2. Chase 3. Sewell 4. Slater After these 4 a bunch of players like Smith, Waddle, Surtain, Parsons, Horn would be amazing.
Just before we do this trade, would you swap picks with the 9'ers for this dude straight up? We probably would of drafted him if the 9'ers took Quinnen.
It definitely is a possiblity, imo, if for no other reason than the fact of who is left in FA if they trade Sam now? There's Nick Mullens, who knows the offense, but has a grand total of 16 games started in his 3-year NFL career, and Alex Smith, whom I don't think the Jets could fit under the salary cap, and a bunch of JAGS.
It’s simple. If Sam leaves as a free agent the Jets get a 3rd round compensatory pick, so there is no need to trade him if all they can get is a 3rd or less. May as well let him start the season and see if he improves his value.
