I think James has a ton of upside. Huge arm and reportedly a very good leader/calm in the huddle. He is also a Joe D pick who's has a year. Stick with Sam & James and trade the #2!!
Wilson getting slammed for no good reason.. he has the arm, the accuracy and the mentality to succeed. Anyone who is questioning the level of competition is grasping at straws because the only real valid argument in my mind for not drafting him is his injury history and if it will effect his durability
Of course the level of competition is not the only barometer, but it should be weighed heavily into the equation. I also have concerns about a young man from Provo Utah being the face of a franchise in a city with 8M people. I just don't see a good outcome here. We can do better with that draft capital IMO
If you are a fan who wants to trade down, acquire picks, and roll with Sam, I can understand your point of view towards not wanting Wilson. However, if you are anti-Wilson and are sure he is a bust, but do want Fields, Lance or Jones and you are sure on them, you sound ridiculous. They all come with a lot of risk but also a lot of potential.
I can't speak for everyone but I am basing my judgement of Wilson on the overall body of work and how that stacks Vs the other WBs In this draft. It always concerns me as well when the media hype train hits at the last minute and become wowed by some drill, throw, or one game. Instead of trusting the tape And overall body of work. Teams get in trouble all the time for buying into the hype. Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields have been 1a and 1b the whole way until very recently. It's bothersome. A lot of other reasons I'm against taking Zach Wilson at #2. Hopefully JD does get It right. He really loved Joe Flacco too and I always felt he was mediocre too. So, I hope for the best. The league isn't always right and the media drivel is wrong more times than not. So that doesn't mean a thing to me. Wilson dislike for a lot of us is based on taking the time to actually break the kid down. Watch his games. Look at the overall skill set and body of work. Than compare that with the other options at play. For me. He's definitely not who I would gamble on.
It's not ridiculous when you've watched every game of Justin Fields and all but a couple of Zach Wilson's games. People actually have valid reasoning. That hype train Is very strong though. What can you do? Oh well. I'm very secure in my thought process. If we take Wilson. I'm not going to like it but I hope he proves me wrong and is successful here. I just doubt it.
This why I was so uneasy about trading for Watson. Too many non-Jets fans were suggesting that’s what we should do or it’s a “slam dunk”. The last time I heard that was for LaVeon. They never have our best interest at heart.
Good responses, @IIMeanDeanII! You definitely know Justin Fields more than most. I respect your opinion on both. I get that side of Lawrence/Fields being 1A and 1B too. Ever since the Jets lost to Denver on TNF, I looked towards the NFL Draft and Lawrence and Fields. If the Jets did not get the #1 pick, I assumed they would get Fields, as many others did. Late in the process, people started talking about Zach Wilson. I could see how that would be upsetting, when you assume the Jets will get Fields. I like what I see in Wilson though, so it did not upset me. I have liked what I have seen in Fields too. Even the weaker games he had this year, I still saw star quality and potential in him. That is the part I don't get. I see the qualities in both, yet somehow some people are saying they don't see any in Wilson. To me, whichever you pick is a risk. They may not work out, the one you don't pick may be great. It is a tough decision. Not to mention the whole Darnold situation. So it is complicated and not so cut and dry, as some fans seem to think.
The AFC East plays great defense. We have all seen Buffalo, Miami and NE. I want the QB that can effectively handle pressure because they are going to see a lot of it. They need to be able to read a defense as well. Sam doesn't have that ability and the next QB must. So who is better prepared to handle blitzes and disguised coverages? The arm talent it there between Fields and Wilson. But who is the "smarter" QB or has the potential to be? That's the question I want answered.
If you're relying on opinion pieces by so-called "experts" to tell you who the best QB is, rather than watching film, I don't have much respect for your opinion. Even watch the film breakdowns by reliable analysts like O'Sullivan, Jenkins, Simms, and a few others, because while they have their own biases, you can see the plays with your own eyes and be able to have some idea of what they're talking about. If you want a video that exposes Wilson's "warts", watch the JT O'Sullivan Episode 4 on Wilson - I think he's a little picky, but overall he does a good job in pointing out Wilson's mistakes (even if they're almost all in one game). When I watch Wilson, I see very special arm talent - not Mahomes/Allen level but close - and a knack for making plays. The injuries are something to weigh, but they happened a couple of years ago and his performance this past season should prove that he's fully recovered. Bottom line: whether it's Wilson or Fields or Lance or Jones, look at the tape to decide. But this stuff about "strength of schedule", and "character rumors" is mostly clickbait. The GMs and CS have the ability to dig into these things way more than we do, and that's their job.
No. They drafted him because they needed a QB and it was between him and Rosen and they liked him better. But besides the point, would you knowingly draft a QB that can't process the game mentally? I sure as hell wouldn't.
This presumes there are QBs at the top of the draft that you know can’t process the game mentally. I don’t know of any so that’s not a concern of mine for this draft.
Shouldn't the fact that Cimini wrote it be a caus Agree. People say no one is anti Wilson, just think is too much hype for a one year wonder. OK fine. Then I read a comment here that said it is concern to have a young man from Provo Utah as the face of the franchise in a City of 8M people. My though went WTF does that got to do with anything when it comes to football or anything else? Comments like that gives the impression is 8M people with some real sorry ass discriminatory excuse for fans. Where the person is from, his background, ethnicity or anything else has fuck all to do with what makes him a good face of the franchise. It’s his character and his talent. As far as I know all these kids be it Fields, Wilson, Lance have had tremendous success, great work ethic and strong leadership qualities on an off the field. Some apparently have a very narrow definition of what makes a good QB the face of the franchise.
When you are building a case for your guy, it's easiest to tear down the others candidates. That much has been clear the last 2 days. It's like politics and it's sickening. Stand on. the merits of your guy.
I read it as small town boy in the big city type thing. It’s not different than some pundits saying Allen was a perfect match for Cleveland or Buffalo because he’s coming from a small school like Wyoming. The reporters run out of stuff to talk about and start reaching by this point in the draft process.
Good points about Allen, although to me he would have been a great face of the franchise for us. But statements like that kind of blow my mind and diminishes all credibility to their argument. I want to say, agree or disagree, particularly when it comes to QBs you and a select few others bring a lot of credibility to this site. Appreciate your highlights using the fundamentals of football to make an argument. I’m still torn between the two but find comfort in knowing our CS will sort it out and make the right choice.
In JD we trust until we don’t. If Wilson is the pick, I’m a roll with it like Darnold. The only thing that is going to be hard for me to not to hold against JD will be that it was the worst kept secret. I despise the fact that everyone in sports media act like they know definitely what we are doing with the pick.
That is true, great point. Also, I still have not completely discarded the idea that JD trades the second pick to someone and throws a monkey wrench into this draft. I’m a bit surprised about the rumors since JD holds everything pretty close to his vest.
