IMO it should. I've thought for years that id was dumb to only have 53 players on a roster and then some of them have to be inactive on game days. It makes no sense. It's just a sign that owners are freaking cheap and don't want to have to pay to fly all those players, put them up in hotels and feed them. IMO they should leave the rosters and PSs the way they were this past season or even expand them further.

I'm totally against the move to 17 games. IMO it will lead to more injuries and worse play. Play is already too sloppy and not as crisp as it used to be. There will be less offseason practices to work on blocking, tackling, and fundamentals. The owners greed will wind up destroying the NFL.

100% agreed. It is sickening just how insanely greedy these billionaire owners are, literally squeezing every single penny they can out of their billion dollar franchise. I always laugh when people accuse the players of being greedy, while overlooking the fact that the owners are billionaires who are greedy mofo's themselves.

I wonder if there will be any dissenting owners in this vote.

At first I thought the NFL would use the 17th game to expand their Europe influence. Like 'this week, the AFCE will be playing in London. Jets-Bills, Fish-Cheaters'. Next week it will be the NFCE. Stuff like that. 8 double header weekends. Oh well, guess not.

Just got to thinking, with the extra game will come extra snaps, extra yards, extra ints, etc. There's gonna be at least a few players with conditional contracts that missed the mark after 16 games but made the mark during the 17th game. I remember hearing about players in the past the missed out on a big payday by something tiny, like one more snap, or 10 more yards, etc. Hopefully there'll be players that cash in b/c of the 17th game!

It already has.......there’s a big drop off between the game 30-40 years ago to now. Back then it was a game. It was more fun and as a fan you tuned into a different “adventure” every week. Nowadays the NFL is just a corporation - everything is too uniformed. All the fields look the same. There’s hardly anymore dirt.......anything more than a few drops of rain - weather delay. All the political nonsense.....and God help a kicker who misses two kicks in a row - he’ll be looking for a new job the next day. Just very very cutthroat nowadays......as a fan it removes a lot of fun.

Some teams get 9 home games and some get 8.

Fucking stupidest shit I ever heard in a sport where there are some places that are major home field advantages:

What's next, 82 game season like in NBA? At least NBA is smart enough to have same # of home and away games. I get the greedy part, but it has to be as fair as possible, and this is just imbalanced schedule. Maybe the plan is to make it 18 next year, and keep going to match 82?

Players deserve to have a vote on this. They're the ones putting their bodies on the line every week.

I know the case but companies don't want it. companies want us to work more for less, employees want us to work less for more. employees having a say in work schedule is never a good idea. it's 1 game. it's not that big of a deal. they should cut preseason down to 2 games

    Funny you say that

By the time you read this newsletter, there's a good chance that the NFL will officially have expanded the schedule to 17 games.
Once the vote happens, one of the biggest changes you'll see will come with international games. According to Sports Illustrated the NFL could be moving a game to Germany as soon as next year, which means if you've ever wanted to celebrate Oktoberfest in Germany, 2022 might be a good year to do it.
When the expanded schedule gets approved, that will create 16 new games on the schedule each season and all 16 of those will be AFC-NFC games. Of those 16 games, four of them will be played internationally starting in 2022 and a big reason that's happening is because the NFL is going to require every team to play at least one international game every eight years (My guess is that one division each year will have to host the international games).
With the league planning to play at least four international games each year, the plan is to put two in London, one in Mexico City and one in Germany. The German game would be played in either Berlin or Munich. As the international games move forward, the NFL will also be eyeing other countries like Canada and South America.

    So cool. Thanks for sharing.

If they moved all the 17th games to foreign venues, there wouldn't be any team getting an extra home game (even if they alternated years). And football seems very popular in other places.

I think the 10% annual growth in the states is going to flatten out in the next few years. Think about it....if the 10% a year continues, the NFL would DOUBLE in size every decade. I just don't see that happening (here). But if the NFL can get American football as popular as soccer, the sky's the limit. Someday the American market may become the afterthought!

So, this means the Jets play the Eagles (4th in NFC East) as the extra game this year. Right?

Jets have a good shot to make history! No one has gone 0-17 and the next year they will expand to 18 games so it will never happen again!
