If the 17th game is approved, AFC East will play NFC East. Jets will play the Eagles, Bills will play the Redskins etc.
This should reduce the preseason by a game or two, right? Starters usually only play for an extended period in the third game.
I imagine that it will get rid of pre season week 4. Going to be weird but it's all about the MONEY Sent from my M2007J20CG using Tapatalk
1st vs 1st 2nd vs 2nd They will start with AFC East vs NFC East, AFC West vs NFC West etc. One year, AFC teams will have an extra home game, another year it will be NFC teams having an extra home game. One thing I hope is, they add a second BYE week to give players a chance to recover and reduce Preseason to 2 games only. 4 games is just stupid.
Correct on the scheduling....I’ve heard that they are not adding a second bye week. Also, I do think preseason is reduced by one game
Replacing a Philly pre-season game for a regular season game. It's a wash. The advantage of this move is that the "Jets just need to win out" threads won't start until Week 7.
The NFL already has a longevity issue with their players and they're just adding to the issue by adding more games in the regular season. Additionally they're watering down the playoffs. It's a shame because the setup before the seventh playoff team was perfect. The players also only hurt themselves by fighting for reduced practice schedules and reduced hitting in practice, but I understand why they fought for it because it's the only thing they can fight for. They should be fighting for roster expansion but at the end of the day that'll only hurt the top end players paychecks (the ones that ultimately have the biggest voice in negotiations) so that will never happen. It's all about money too. So more games = more money for both sides by way of increased revenue. Bring on more football though I guess.
This is asking too much from the players bodies. Its the latest greed driven bad move by a once great league.
Agreed. This, like so many other things the league has done over the years, will continue to erode the quality of football that we see each week.
Part of me agrees that 4 games is stupid, and if I had season tickets, I'd have trouble having to pay for those games and parking. OTOH they give teams a chance to look at younger players, gives the younger players and depth reps in game conditions and a chance to make a name for themselves and possibly change the HC's mind and win a roster spot. That experiene that young players get can help if they're called upon during the season. I think they'd be more beneficial if coaches didn't do everything in such a vanilla fashion, but I understand that they don't want to give anything away that they can use during the season. The games do get sloppy, however, and boring when loading dock workers are playing against grocery store stock boys.
I agree the extra game will be more ware and tear on the players...especially the starters. HC's will have to be smart and use their 2nd tier players more often throughout the season. Also hear the SB will be pushed out a week to Feb 13. NFL doesn't want to compete with Labor Day Weekend to start up, so the start gets pushed out a week. That's why there won't be a 2nd bye week. Do we know our bye week yet?
No not until the schedule is released.... So now the Super Bowl is around Valentines Day.......I heard a while ago they were considering moving the Super Bowl to President’s Day weekend because everybody wanted the day off after the Super Bowl. Well this would seem to be the perfect time to do that all the NFL has to do is add in a second bye week.
I wonder how long until we hear the season needs to expand to 18 games because the 17-game format is just awkward...
The '72 Dolphins will be thrilled...one extra game makes it even less likely that a team is going to be able to go undefeated. I am sure those guys will pop their champagne if/when the NFL announces that the regular season is expanded lol.
Does that mean that the roster will increase to 54/55, tor increase the number of practice squad for quick replacements?
