...as the 5th Best FA signing and has high praise for JD and Saleh. They ranked the Best and Worst FA signings thus far. Full article is linked below, but this is what they had to say about our signing of Davis, which I know has been a kind of controversial signing here on TGG, with some members praising it while others have been criticizing it. Take it for what it's worth, guys:

    5. Jets sign WR Corey Davis
    Contract: 3 years, $37.5 million
    Per year: $12.5 million

Some think New York overpaid here, considering Davis hasn't necessarily lived up to his first-round pedigree. But his trajectory suggests he offers even more upside than, say, JuJu Smith-Schuster. He just turned 26, he has quietly been rock solid for three years, and he instantly brings credibility to a Jets offense that sorely lacked it. We like this signing A LOT...now the Jets just need to find someone to deliver Davis the ball. Paging Zach Wilson....

    What in there is hyperbole?

BroadwaySam, if I had to guess, I would say the statement that: "...Davis offers even more upside than JuJu" is probably that Cap is referring to.

I would say that's not hyperbole at all. There's plenty to suggest Davis is the better WR and can produce better numbers in the right situation.

Broadway, I am not disputing your point at all, I was just saying that is what I think Cap was referring to, since JuJu has pretty much already established himself a star in the league, and Davis obviously hasn't.

If JuJu is a star then Davis is right behind him. If Davis played all 16 this year he probably would have gotten close to JuJu's output in his best season and as it is, Davis has had the better seasons the past two years.

yeah I know, Broadway, I am not disputing any of that. I am not looking to argue with you over the Davis signing. I was just saying that a lot of people know who JuJu is, very few people know who Davis is, so in a lot of fans' minds, saying that Davis is better than JuJu comes off as hyperbolic until Davis has a breakout, star making season. That's all.

The bold is key. I think that most of us are skeptical about players that we hear others talking about until we see them play or see video of them. I know I have to fight that all the time when posters mention prospect or FAs on here. I'm at least aware of that bias, but I think most people are not. They just automatically assume that anyone that they haven't heard of can't possibly be any good or better than players or names they do know. Sometimes they haven't even seen the player whose name they know play, they've just heard other people rave about that player. Many football fans are not that knowledgeable.

Well-said, NCJetsfan, and I agree. I also think people just like JuJu Smith-Schuster's name....I mean it is a fun name to say out loud.."Ju-Ju" ....kinda reminds me of the uber-gummy, little "JuJy fruits" candy some of us used to eat when we were kids...but now I am dating myself, lol. :);)

I agree 100% NCJetsFan. that is one of the reasons, I enjoy posting so much on this board...there are A LOT of knowledgeable fans on here (you, MattRobinson, REVISIon, Mr.Jet80, ColoradoContrails, et. al. just to name a few). But you are correct, in that most people who consider themselves football/NFL fans are more of the casual fan/fantasy football fan variety, as opposed to fans who follow their team intently year-round and who can name more than just the superstars and head coach and who also appreciate AND are knowledgeable about their team's history...AND who are also interested in the game's strategic elements (play design, offensive/defensive philosphy, etc.).

You forgot these nasty little things. They could break your teeth but were also sticky at the same time.

lol do u rememer "Now and Laters" Ralebird? those things were rock hard....and then were gummy and sticky as hell. To think of some of the crap candy we at as kids. Now I wouldn't touch them on a dare, for fear of either cracking a filling or yanking one out of my teeth, or yanking out my crown, lol.

Don't remember thm at all but when I looked them up I remembered Starbursts which were pretty much the same thing. If you got them fresh they were pretty chewy, if they were old they could tear your gums off the bone.

Jujy fruits were different, they were fruit shaped. Jujubes were good too you just had to suck on them before they got chewy.

Time to buy some old school candy off Amazon!

    Corey Davis:
    6'3 / 209 lbs.
    2017: 1st round pick (5th overall).
    26 years of age.

I freaking love this addition of Corey Davis and agree that he's a top 5 NFL Free Agent addition.

Outside of his rookie year of 2017 (missed 5 games due to a hamstring injury) he's been really healthy throughout his previous 3 years of 2018/2019/2020 (combining for 45 games played) and has only missed 3 games.

1 of his games missed was due to Covid-19 Protocol and he even lined up and played the day after following his brothers death (his dedication is second to none).

He's only missed two games throughout the previous 3 years because of injury.

What I love most about his overall game is his extremely physical style of play on the outside.

Plays with the same type of physicality as Jerricho Cotchery and Quincy Enunwa once played with and imo he's going to capture the hearts of Jets faithful due to his overall toughness and style of play (he run blocks like an LG too).

His proven production also has the potential to skyrocket and go through the roof as a JET because throughout the previous 3 years he's been able to combine for...

173 Receptions for 2,476 Receiving yards and 11 TD Receptions (63.4% catch rate).

Which is an average of 57.6 Receptions for 825 Receiving yards and 3.6 TD Receptions per year.

And he's been able to record this type of production despite the fact that he's...

A.) Played alongside of a mediocre QB in Marcus Mariota (2018) and a very good but yet game managing QB in Ryan Tannehill (2019-2020)

    And...

B.) Has been forced to lineup @ WR within a (super) heavy run first Tennessee Offense featuring Derrick Henry who's (over the previous 3 seasons) combined for 896 rushing attempts for 4,626 rushing yards and 45 rushing TD's.

    Example:

2018: Tennessee ranked 9th in Rushing Attempts but only 31st in Passing Attempts.

2019: Tennessee ranked 10th in Rushing Attempts but only 31st in Passing Attempts.

2020: Tennessee ranked 2nd in Rushing Attempts but only 30th in Passing Attempts.

    • No team has passed the football fewer times than Tennessee has throughout the previous 3 NFL season(s).

Which goes to show that Corey Davis being able to put up 173 Receptions for 2,476 Receiving yards and 11 TD Receptions (63.4% catch rate) throughout his previous 3 years (2018-2020) is a testament to his true ability and potential (for Zach Wilson).

Just imagine what type of production he'd been able to record within an actual NFL Passing Attack instead of being buried alive behind Tennessee's 1980's/1990's style of offensive philosophy (Derrick Henry, run 1st).

Joe Douglas struck while the iron is hot because Corey Davis @ only 26 years of age (now NFL fully developed) and is coming off of a career year (2020).

    • 65 Receptions for 984 Receiving yards and 5 TD Receptions (70.7% catch rate) throughout only 14 games.

    Corey Davis.
    Denzel Mims.
    Elijah Moore.
    Jamison Crowder.
    Keelan Cole.

    That's pretty sick.

And Joe Douglas gets an A+ for the ways he's attacked and made WR a priority since the departure of Robby Anderson.

I never knew this about Corey Davis, until just now.

He's the only NCAA player to have (ever) recorded 300+ Receptions, 5,000+ Receiving yards and 50+ TD Receptions.

    I can not wait to see this kid in Green and White @ only 26 years of age while heading into his 5th NFL year and now fully developed;

I'm not going to allow Tennessee ranking 31st (2018), 31st (2019) and 30th (2020) in Passing Attempts (because of, Derrick Henry) temper my enthusiasm in terms of being A+ excited over the addition of Corey Davis.
