Nobody wants to acknowledge its a game of balance. QB is the most important player on the field but theyre still only 1/11. And alot of their duties good or bad are contigent on those around them performming their assignment. rinse & repeat. Like it or not one of the very reasons for the hysteria around moving on from Sam is a complete lack of a supporting cast. This team isnt in a position to support any QB w.o utilizing 2nd overall to select either an OL/skill or trade down for more assets. Also refuse to acknowledge taking a long term view. If QB is so god damn important why not put it on a pedestal & wait for a QB that at least has more than 1 productive season AND/OR hold out for a normal college season/draft process starting next class? Instead its hype a guy up & poo poo any discouraging word along the way.Its become politicial. And can we put the absolutely ridiculous notion that there wont be a single QB avail in future drafts to bed? https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2022-nfl-mock-draft-sam-howell-goes-one-detroit-lions/ Recent 22 mock from PFN..FIVE QBs in the top 10...FIVE.. SIX in round 1.
You are conflating your own personal & specific opinion on Wilson w/ my greater philosophy on QBs. I myself wouldn’t draft Wilson at 2 for different reasons. However, I wouldn’t fault the Jets if they felt he was a potential FQB. I would however be upset if passed because of the perceived “risk”.
Great post Kurt. love it. Everyone will be back next year sucking up to some 21 year old QB who had a good season. Some things never change.
Every draft pick is a gamble. Very, very few guys are sure things, it's usually only obvious after the fact. Even your boy Smith has some legitimate concerns, don't fool yourself into thinking he's the guaranteed second coming of Jerry Rice.
There’s plenty of good and even great QBs in the NFL...there’s only 1 each season that ends up as a champion, so you have to do other things better and field better players in other positions that can overcome the difference in QB. I mean if it’s all about the QB, we might as well just crown Mahomes and the Chiefs for the next decade. Good luck getting a QB even close to as good as him if that’s the end all, be all. There’s no doubt QB is extremely important but I agree that people look past everything else too much in football
At this point it really feels like all the Wilson supporters think Sam was the only reason our offense struggled and not the overall lack of talent/Gase system. To them Sam is the cause of all of our struggles and needs to be replaced before he drags the entire franchise to the depth of Hadas.
I would never suggest that I'd rather fail taking Smith then succeed with another pick. Out of curiosity, what are Smiths concerns? I spent way too long looking for some and couldn't find any beyond skinny legs. Got any others?
You're looking at this the wrong way. Yes, it takes more than just a good QB to win a Super Bowl, but how many teams even compete for one without a good QB? It's essentially a prerequisite to success in the modern game. With that in mind, shouldn't a team do everything in its power within reason to acquire one? To think we should pass one up at #2 this year you have to believe two things will happen simultaneously next year: 1) We'll draft at #2 or higher again 2) The QB class next year will be as strong or stronger than the one this year Do you honestly think not one, but both of those things are likely to be true?
This read like a personal defense of Darnold getting one more year. I’m a Jets fan first and foremost. If we draft a QB while keeping Darnold & he ends up having a great season, that’s good for the Jets & therefore good for me. Darnold was not my preferred choice in 2018 but I still applaud the Jets for TRYING to address the QB position which is so pivotal. Same goes this year. Wilson is not my preferred choice but I rather they draft a QB at 2 than not.
I explained your misunderstanding of his point already and you're still insistent on operating under the false misunderstanding.
I’m not against drafting a QB at 2, but you better be damn sure he’s “the guy” to pull the trigger. I’m not worried about the bust potential, but more worried about the “boom potential” when you consider what you could have done to help the overall team by trading back...if we get an OK QB at 2 I’ll be pissed with what we could have done instead. I want greatness at 2 I don’t know what will open up in the future at QB, it seems like more vets are being made available for trade, and other QB prospects are doing well that get drafted out of the top 10
Watch the breakdown of film on Sam he is a flawed QB that on occasion makes some great throws. Overall Sam on tape is not good. He makes throws late has trouble coming off his first read and his bad footwork make inaccurate at worst inconsistent at best. Not all Gase concepts were bad. Turn on the fil it doe snot lie that is why we are not receiving any meaningful offers for Sam. No weapons and bad coach is just being a lazy fan.
If they draft a QB at 2 I think it’s safe to assume the current regime believe he’s that guy and not because TGG told them to.
Man, nobody is ever "sure" a guy is the guy. It's irrelevant in almost every case except when the prospect is Andrew Luck. Nobody knows where we'll draft next year or what the QB class will look like. However, it's unlikely we'll have a better draft pick and early indications are that it's unlikely the QB class will be as strong either. Nothing is certain but smart teams operate using the best information they have at the time. Drafting a QB at #2 may turn out to hurt us, that doesn't mean it wouldn't be a smart decision. It's still the best decision we can make given the information we currently possess.
If a Franchise Defense had as much chance of winning a SB as a team with the FQB, I'd almost rather have the Franchise Defense. It was a lot of fun watching our Defense turn good offenses in to pee-wee football players and good QBs crying for their momma's! '09/'10 with Revis and the Band of Lunatics up front was really fun to watch. Plus there were more than just one jersey in the stands. With Saleh as our HC and the last team to win the SB a Franchise Defense, that may be the way we're headed. With our #2 overall turned into Revis and Lawrence Tayler!
The Qb is the factor that gets you to or close to the superbowl. AFC Championship game Mahomes and Allen NFC Rodgers and Brady. You need a good/great QB play to succeed in the league on a consistent basis. On defense it is not about corners with todays rules corners really cant do that much. You need a great pass rush to counteract the great QB play. You win in today's NFL with great QB play and a great pass rush.
4-12 would mean a rookie coach came in and doubled the wins. And yet 4-12 would still get the Jets a top 5/6 draft pick, on top of what Seattle gives us. there will be chances at a QB next year. They better be damned impressed by Zach Wilson's 2020 season
OK let me explain it another way...I just hope the Jets are truly convinced that, let’s just say Wilson for example, has a very good chance at being great in the NFL if they decide to take him at 2 I’m completely against taking him if they “like” some of the QBs, and decide that he’s the best of the bunch (not by much) and we have a need so let’s hope for the best. I would much rather do all I can to trade down, improve the team with more picks, and then take your favorite QB that makes it to your pick. I was totally against trading up to 3 overall for Darnold because I personally liked Allen, Mayfield, Jackson, and Darnold all similarly and I knew one would fall to 6. Think of it like that but in reverse. If you have Wilson far and above everyone else, and love his chances to succeed then by all means it’s worth it
