Just out of curiosity.. I remember when there were rumors that Edwards was going to be out of here after last season, there were a lot of mixed feelings about weather or not he deserved to be given the boot. I doubt any Jets fan is upset about the move now, but I'm curious to see how many people were against it. There were also many that felt that Henderson or Heimerdinger were the best candidates for the job. I'm just curious to see how people felt then and how they feel now. For those that wanted one of the coordinators to take over, how do you think they would have fared?
I was on the Herm bandwagon. I'm not afraid to admit it. I was angry when Edwards walked after swearing up and down he was sticking around. Now? Please. Let him enjoy perennial losing, while he drives another one of the best RBs in the game into the ground. I was also in favor of promoting Henderson and Dinger, in that order. I was even in favor of promoting Westhoff when those two didn't work out. Now? It's not even an argument. In all honesty, there isn't a coach in the league I would rather have for us over Mangini. No coach in this league could have been expected to do what Mangini has. I highly doubt ANY of the coaches that could have been promoted would have had anywhere near the same success. Plus, we kept the best of the three as our special teams genius, so it was win-win. I was against Sutton a few weeks ago, but our recent much improved play on defense has begun to change my mind about that. And there's no way I would rather have Dinger over Schotty Jr. In 20/20 hindsight, Herm being a snake was the best thing that's happened to the Jets since Parcells first arrived.
I totally agree, but actually feel that in the long run Mangini and comapany may be better than the Parcells era, because they may actually stay longer. Parcells and company turned the whole organization around set it on the right course. He did this with his experienced "Parcell's Guys". We now have a team of coachs that are growing into their jobs as well as molding the team. We may be able to keep this growth going for longer.
Interesting stats. KC without Herm last year had the No. 1 ranked O and the 25th ranked D and went 10 & 6. Herm got the D to 16th and the O to 15th and the team will finish 9 & 6 at best. Dinger took over the 5th ranked O in Denver and they are now the 20th ranked O. Henderson took over the 20th ranked D in Detoit and they are now the 26th ranked D. KC, Denver and Detroit the teams Herm, Dinger and Henderson went to all will finish with a worse record than last year. The Jets on the other hand will at worst have a 5 game turnaround to the plus side. Those who argue we win when Pennington plays and he is good for 5 games a year may or may not be right just like I believe Herm and his staff cost us 2 to 3 games a year, a chance for a 1or 2 seed and a trip to the SB in the last 5 years. Im not gonna lie, I was really on the Herm bandwagon, I really wanted him to stay and i thought that when he left and curtis went down and would likely not play this year, this team would be lucky to win 2 games this year. Well training camp came along, and i learned more about mangini and this team and my prediction before the season changed, to 10-6 and we are only one win away. Mangini is the man, keep him around for a LONG time.
Wow!!! I'm not a numbers guy, but damn... seeing it like that I'm amazed we won anything the last few years
It depended on who we were replacing him with. I was fine with Mangini or Brad Childress or some young guy coming in but I didn't want a Mike Sherman or Mike Martz or Jim Haslett any of those retread coaches. If that's that we were going to get, I'd have wanted to keep Herm. Obviously it worked out well, but keeping Herm wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world.
Once I saw what kind of practices they were running at "Club Ed" I wanted him gone. Seriously, high school kids practice much harder than that. What a joke.
I was indifferent towards it. I don't think Herm is a bad coach, but I felt that he had peaked here and it was time to move on. The only thing that made me begin to regret letting him go was when the FO was looking at guys like Mike Tice and Jim Hasslett. Herm is certainly better than them.
You wouldn't be refering to the Captain Jet on the field incident would you? Few things have embarassed me to be a Jet fan... but that one in the pinnacle.
Didn't we try to get some other coach first but failed? And then we were like, "Oh great, we get a towel boy for a coach". Just a thought for discussoin, with Mangini as head coach, would Herm be a fun Defensive Coordinator to have on the roster?
I blindly supported Herm because I'm a Jets fan until the Steelers playoff game when we took the knees to lose a few yards for the FG attempt. I overlooked the poor clock management, the lack of in game adjustments, the ever growing injury list, the young talent on the bench ... At that point I opened up my eyes and began to see all of his inadequacies as a coach that were there all along. Once that occurred I wanted him out of here. Good riddance.
I was the leader of the Herm Edwards Fan Club - Fargo Chapter. We actually had his second cousin in for an honorary award. We wanted Herm, but he ended up missing the bus because he was too busy chasing a chicken. It was nice, we served Kool-Aid and we played bridge to win. We have some great new members that can offer a lot, but we won't let them speak or anything; that's left for the long time veterans. All-in-all I think it's a mediocre club, and we end up running out of time (even though one of our members is supposed to keep an eye on the clock and make sure everything moves along in a timely manner) At 3:15 on Sunday we like to draw. I'm a little disappointed guys like rajensen haven't made a go at sticking around here and spouting there nonsense even in the face of mountains of evidence. It's been a few months since I heard about what a terrible DC Mangini was last year in NE and what a great job Herm was doing with the Chiefs. It would've also been fun to see Buttle try to explain how the refs gave the Jets the game this week by making the incorrect call on the Cotchery TD.
I wanted him to stay because I thought he had done a good job overall and I was tired of coaches leaving and the turmoil that ensues. Plus, our history of hiring coaches is spotty at best, so Herm to me was better than the unknown. But once he left after talking all that shit about how he was staying, my opinion of him totally changed. All his rhetoric rang hollow once he did that and at that point I said good riddance. As it worked out he did us the biggest favor anyone's ever done us.
