Same could be said if we take Fields and he busts and Wilson lights the place up?

The only difference is your opinion on who you think is best :)

I am not sure about either tbh

I agree with praying they get this right. I disagree with your assessment of Wilson vs. Fields, but neither of us are experts so we're going to have to trust JD on this. I just hope he uses the #2 for whichever QB he thinks will be the FQB for this team.

I get that Fields is a top prospect this year, but I just can’t get past the fact that Ohio State has not put a QB in the NFL worth a damn in the last 50 years. It’s not that it’s rare. It just never happens?

    I keep asking why?

    dominant program. Great school. Why?

all OSU QBs have failed in the NFL. Why?

I totally understand that Fields is not Haskins, or Jones, or even Art freaking Schlister from like 1982 or whatever. None of those kids have anything to do with Fields I get.

but still...why is it that this great program can’t develop even one decent NFL QB?

it’s gotta be something systemic. It’s not in their DNA. They coach a different game...I don’t know what it is, but it for sure is something. There is no way a school that big and that good for so long can’t develop even one decent NFL QB. There has to be a reason.

I think part of it is that they are traditionally a very good strong program with strong OL and running games...they’ve certainly developed plenty of great OL and RBs. Great corners too. And plenty of very good receivers too...going back to Joey Galloway and others I’m sure.

but I’m thinking that they are typically so dominant up front that their QBs have super open clean pockets with little pressure, and they often throw to wide open receivers. Certainly most of Fields’ highlights reflect that. But many QBs have that at the college level...

so maybe their scheme is much simpler and their QBs don’t have to read the full field or go through progressions?

like I said...I don’t know why such a great program has not developed any good NFL level QBs, but there is something amiss.

now I will say that I watched the playoff games and his performance against Clemson was impressive. Especially the toughness after that big hit.

But still... based on school alone, I would not use the second overall on Fields....too risky for me.

maybe if we trade down a few spots for an additional first rounder, then maybe we use a later pick on him....I don’t

I think the bold is probably close to the heart of the issue, combined with Ohio State always having an elite offensive line, running game and receivers. Similar to why Alabama QB's never seem to pan out in the pros.

I will say I'm generally against scouting the helmet over the player and there are examples like Burrow and Mahomes that fly in the face of doing so. But if I had to guess why Ohio State never produces good QB's the aforementioned reasons would be my guess.

Now, I have heard that the system Fields ran was more pro-style than the one Haskins and those before him ran but I wonder how much more?

Well-said, Kryoptix. The next college QB who can't read a defense to save his life who actually has longterm/sustained success in the NFL as an elite QB will be the first. It is a skill that can be improved upon (as most skills can be, obviously), but it is either something you have or you don't, and if you don't possess it at all....it is not really something that somebody else can "GIVE YOU", kinda like being able to hit a major league curve ball.

The fact that Wilson probably didn't face many defenders who will be playing in the NFL next season goes both ways, we probably didn't play with many players that will be playing in the NFL next season...

Little tidbit... Steve Smith and Chad (ocho-cinco) Johnson were WRs at Santa Monica City College. Before Steve went to Utah and Chad to Oregon State. That SMCC QB had no idea how lucky he was throwing to those 2. Imagine those poor junior college DBs...

100% agree also you for got to mention at the beginning of this college season Zach Wilson wasn't even ranked in the top 5 QBs the guy is a big risk out side of Lawrence none of these QBs are a top 10 caliber all of them have red flags. They are a big drop off from Lawrence. if Darnold was coming out of school he would rank 2nd behind Lawrence. I agree Jets should trade back but not with San Fran think 2 spots Grab Pitts or best WR on the board.

Maybe the conception of Darnold people had in 2018, but I'd take any of Lawrence, Wilson, Fields, or Lance over the actual Darnold.

The more I’ve read, watched and learned about him, the more I’m convinced Zach Wilson is going to be the pick. Other than his medicals (which likely will check out) he has no downsides.

Arm talent (power, accuracy, release) - check
    Football IQ - check
    Work Ethic - check
    Mental/Physical Makeup - check
    Ball security - check

I saw an interview recently and they asked how fast do you run the ‘40... and he said he’s been timed in the 4.5-4.6 range.

The kid is an excellent athlete, BYU coaches say he’s not just athletic for a Qb, he’s about as athletic as a safety and teams will be surprised how well he tests. His brother is a BYU linebacker.

Also, he’s a student of the game. He’s ultra obsessed with football. Jaguars gave them their playbook and he was genuinely excited to have the chance to spend hours upon hours dissecting it + was looking forward to meeting with them to discuss.

His pro day is coming up next week and he’s going to put on a show. The way he moves, throws... it’s so fluid, smooth... natural. Lawrence looks robotic and stiff comparatively + I truly think Wilson is the better NFL prospect.

In all respects, this kid looks like he’s going to be a total stud (elite Qb)...

The Jets would have to be very foolish to pass on this opportunity.

Who cares what other teams know this year about pick #2? The Jets are drafting #2. It's not like any team can trade ahead of us. On one hand he may be keeping his options open, but OTOH he's screwing himself and the team in not maximizing Sam's trade value. Two teams that were supposedly interested have already dropped out. He probably has also hurt the team with FA WRs and TEs because those guys want to know who the QB is going to be. As it is, a lot of players wouldn't want to sign here due to the rebuild. If those few who might be willing to sign here if they think Wilson or Watson would be the QB, think that there's any chance that Sam will be the QB, then chances are they're not signing with the Jets.

If he trades Sam now there are still other options. There's still a chance he could trade for Watson, albeit possibly a small one. He possibly could have signed Tyrod Taylor or Andy Dalton to be the veteran QB if he had already traded Sam. That ship has sailed, but right now he could still sign CJ Beathard or Nick Mullens of the Niners who can help the offense learn the new system. He can draft a rookie.

I could be mistaken, but I think another factor could be that they are more conservative. As you said they always seem to have a strong OL and RBs, and a strong defense. The old Big Ten was more conservative or traditional in its approach I believe, and I don't think OSU has really moved away from that yet.

Is that fair or accurate, @IIMeanDeanII ?

I'm not sure, I think it's unlikely Jones will be a franchise QB, but I also think it's unlikely Darnold will be a franchise QB.
