I looked up the Jet's special teams going back further than Leon Washington, Bruce Harper and they have needed an elite kick returner or punt returner. These guys are a dime a dozen not Day 1 signing. Now you go back and look up any special team player that made an impact every game. This is not what the Jets tanked for and stashed all their salary cap money for.
Out of interest why does it bother you that it was a day 1 signing? If it needs doing, it needs doing, day 1 or day 10 or whenever the $1m it is costing is coming off the cap at some point and this guy signing will have zero impact on any other possible signing in the slightest. Maybe it needed doing on day 1 before another sensible GM got probably the best gunner in FA for a pittance.
If they are a dime a dozen then why don’t all teams have all-pro gunners? I understand your point, but the bigger picture is in play here. When Jets start pinning teams deep because they have a guy who can get downfield and down the ball at the 2 or 3 yard line on a consistent basis, giving Salehs defense a chance for safeties and shorter fields for offense, you will appreciate the signing. I see the wisdom in this signing.
Signing a guy like Hardee early in free agency is a departure from what our braintrust has done in the past. That's all that needs to be said.
Special teams has been ignored forever. This is a good signing. Dont look for him to play CB ever though, he is just a CB in name only
Look at Mathew Slater on the Patriots and think of how much of a pain in the ass he is for teams that face their ST unit each week. Additions like this are key.
A gunner that plays no other position. Did anyone ever hear Douglas say my priority this offseason is to get a gunner for special teams? You could have gotten this type of player after free agency, after the draft as a UDFA.
Nobody heard it was a priority, what has that got to do with it? So again, why does it matter when he signs this player? It didn't stop him from signing other players, if he wanted to sign another 10 he would have done it regardless of signing this gunner, that was my point. The guy's contract is not getting in the way of any other FA signings. So he shook loose unexpectedly and JD wanted him and signed him, the other point you are ignoring is the fact he seems to be one of the best gunners and was unlikely to be on the market for long, why miss out if you want the player? It really is this simple, the player becomes available and we signed him before somebody else, I doubt it was a priority, just a good opportunity presenting itself and taken by JD, much to Boyer's delight I'd imagine. I am not even sure why you are all fired up over it tbh?
Would have liked a kick returner/punt returner those types we need, every team badly needs. I thought the point of tanking and building up salary cap funds was to address the parts the Jets need like I don't know scoring TD's. Our competition is sure engaged in free agency. Glad we are making Brant Boyer happy.
The point of tanking isn't to get a kick returner, is it? We signed 3 players, the gunner was an add on and not something to get you all worked up over, making out JD targetted him over more important needs is wrong and that is all I was replying to tbh. Will he be the most important player we sign? No Will he contribute from the off? Most definitely and that is all that matters at the end of the day. I am still unsure as to why you think that this signing has distracted us from any other possible signing in free agency, do you seriously think JD just made those other signings and then said 'you know what, before moving on with the important stuff I'll pause everything to look at gunners in FA, ah there's one I'll make enquiries and whilst doing that I will ignore everything else going on around me until I have tied the gunner to a 3-year deal. Ah fuck, I have missed out on my number WR target because I was fucking about with the gunner, what a fucking idiot I am. Still, Boyer will be happy' Come on man
I watched some film on him and cruised the Saints fan boards a bit...…that's all it took, I'm on board with this one.
Boozer arguing just to argue. Saints fans are mad he’s gone. Pundits and experts love the move, he’s graded out as an elite ST gunner. The Jets has coverage issues all last year. Like stop
