Another solid move by JD without breaking a bank. Like with Corey Davis, in essence 2 years guaranteed, 3d year team option at 15 mil per. A good price tag for a premium position and a guy who is top 5 in pressuring QB and #2 in QB hits. Some nice gems here without overpaying or mortgaging future.
Being able to get out of contracts after 2 years is key. For as much grief as Mac gets, he was actually very good at structuring contracts that way as well. Really good addition..
The way this Defense is designed, Quinnen and Lawson on the weak side are going to see a lot of 1:1 matchups. They should be able to cause lots of disruption
Just like I predicted they will sign a slew of pass rushers for Saleh to work with. Let’s see if he can stay on the field
Carl Lawson is Calvin Pace all over again. The difference is that we are not taking a 4-3 DE and turning him into a 3-4 OLB. Theoretically he should slide in to Saleh's defense with very few adjustments needed. BTW, I have nothing against Calvin Pace. He was a good player. He just kind of personifies the Jets mistaken notion about being able to sign a good player at top dollar and profit from the move for years. If he works out, like Pace did, you maybe break even over a period of years. However you almost certainly would have been better off drafting well - finding your own edge and maybe seeing him turn into a great player instead of a perpetual stopgap.
Top dollar? $15 mil a year isn’t even top 15 among edge rushers. There’s a reason you haven’t seen a single analyst call this an egregious overpay. “He was fourth in pressures (64) and second in QB hits (24) among edge rushers, according to PFF. ESPN reported he has the third-fastest get-off rate (0.73) behind just T.J. Watt and Bud Dupree, according to Next Gen Stats.” Fourth... second.... third.... yet has the 17th highest salary. We call that value.
Monday, March 15 Carl Lawson, DE, New York Jets The deal: Three years, $45 million, with $30 million guaranteed Top 100 ranking: 37 Grade: C- My theory on pass rush is that sacks don't tell the entire story of a player's effectiveness. But over time, elite pass-rushers will get plenty of them. So where does that put Lawson, who has totaled 20 sacks in four NFL seasons? Phrased nicely, because that's how we do it here, Lawson is a player the Jets are counting on to elevate his production after signing a big contract. It has happened before, most recently with the Green Bay Packers' 2019 signing of Za'Darius Smith. And Lawson has definitely shown positive signs, having been credited with 58 quarterback pressures last season by NFL Next Gen Stats. But let's be clear: The Jets are paying Lawson to be an every-down game-wrecker. We've seen this kind of risk flop in free agency far more than we've seen it succeed. -- Seifert
Who is Seifert? Because he’s wrong. $15 mil per year at edge is not “game wrecker” money. As crazy as that sounds, it’s the reality.
Looks like a solid pickup. Now if we can improve pass coverage that may translate to more sacks, pressure and hits
Kevin Seifert from ESPN. This was from an ESPN+ article grading the FA signings. https://espnpressroom.com/us/bios/kevin-seifert/
I don't know how Seifert is on other things, but on this one I think Seifert is clueless. He conveniently ignores the fact that during his first three years in the league that Lawson didn't play all that much. He only started one out of 16 games his rookie season. In his 2nd and 3rd seasons, he played in only 7 and 12 games, respectively, and only started 2 of the 12 in 2019. Even in 2020, he only started 11 of the 16 games. He generates pressure, and his pressure led to other Bengals getting sacks. So with him starting so few games and getting so few snaps, where were all those sacks supposed to come from, thin air? Please understand, I'm not criticizing you for posting this, or saying that you agree with him. I think it's definitely worthy to post and discuss, but I strongly disagree with him.
I think with our young studs on the Dline they will all benefit and have a really good year and he will get his sacks
