It was often the player everyone told him to take. Or the on that was at the top of these mock drafts.
It was though. You said "if you need a qb you take a qb" but if JD doesn't view any of these QBs as the fqb that will turn this place around. You trade back or take something else.
i've looked at QB drafting a lot and posted here on it too. It's not a rosy picture drafting at the top (excluding 1). I think it turns into some teams may have the "eye" for QB talent, and as you suggested, referring to Br4d, QBs are being drafted into a very solid situation i think the other variable in this draft is the issue of, if not a QB then who? there's no clear cut #2 from a different position, no CHase YOung or Barkley. Picking a WR at 2 is as iffy as picking a QB at 2.
Are you arguing JD believes none of these QB’s are worth drafting at all and wouldn’t trade back and take them anywhere in the draft? I hardly doubt JD considers everyone of these QB’s not to be worth drafting at all anywhere in the draft. Again, nothing I stated could be argued I believe JD would simply draft a QB he doesn’t believe in.
I think by most standards Sewell is the clear #2. That's why most people think we should trade back if no qb. You are right though, most the wr are iffy. I like Chase but ge missed last year. I like smith, but not sure he will continue to be a #1 in the nfl. Both could be great, but idk.
I doubt think he draft someone he doesn't believe in. I think he could trade back and take one as you said. But if he has his draft board and he never has a qb of value at the spot he's picking and has no trade back offers worth taking, he could simply move along. Thing most people aren't getting us if we trade back then we most like have 3 1st rounders next year. If he doesn't find one he like this year he can easily get the on he wants next year. You don't take someone you don't believe in and bet your job on them.
i saw an interesting article the other day advocating for Kyle Pitts over some of the WR because of the franchise tag cost (i.e., something that won't happen for X years). But the point was how much do you need to spend at a position. I mentioned previously that legend has it, at least up here in Boston where I am, that when Belichek was interviewing for the Clevland job he had a master plan of where he would get different positions in the draft (which round) how much he would spend etc. I say this because one can reasonably argue that elite QBs -- as good as they are -- are not a value, and in a capped league value rules. so it's something to seriously consider in the QB debate. You absolutely have to be right on that decision, particularly in today's market there's a lot to be said for building a team that can get you to 8-8 or better on defense and a running game before swinging for the fences on a QB -- which is really what you're doing in one way or another.
I waited to respond to this bc I didn't wanna come across as abrasive or combative. However, this ultimately draws the line w. why i don't share the Wilson sentiment even partially. The Pennington era is one of the reasons WHY my preference is to prioritize & target a specifically strong armed QB. Yes Pennington was good enough to play. Yes he won alot of games for the Jets. But we spent alot of games & frankly acouple seasons being vertically challenged as an offense. How many games in late oct-Dec were we orchestrating a run heavy/short-intermediate passing attack w. no 3rd level dynamics bc Pennington couldn't drop back & fire one through the wind to the 3rd level on anything non scripted? We also got to the point where we could only bring in certain types of WRs bc he couldn't hit guys deep or over the top? Yes shoulder injuries contributed to this stigma..but doesn't that sound eerily familiar w. ZW??? One of the things that has held this team back is lack of a 3rd level non scripted passing attack. Big chunk plays that seemingly every other team has but we never seem to have the QB/Weapons to orchestrate w. anything close to consistency. I get PFF put together this whole campaign about how great Wilson was at throwing downfield & deep. I just don't see that component as part of his game. I think his game in the NFL is a controlled short/intermediate passing attack.. ironically what Gase wanted in a QB for his offense.Just don't think that gets us over the hump & past these vertical challenges that have seemingly existed since Brandon Short crossed JP Machado's face in a meaningless preseason game. People go way too far w. college completion % & generally completed throws in college. Do we want a high % dink & dunker or a dynamic passer to all 3 levels & especially deep?? I know what my answer is. Needless to say ZW's playing style & projection don't excite in a top 3 pick..maybe "good enough"..but at the same time we're saying their wont be another Mahomes or Allen w. a strong arm for a decade so instead we're going to take someone who doesn't have the same physical gifts or explosion...draft him earlier than both those guys were & expect him to go head to head w. those guys?? I understand the thought process...but I hope no one takes offense to thinking it's severely flawed & kind of lowers the standard in personnel.
I don't normally put a ton of stock into pro days because of the controlled environment specifically designed to make the player look, throwing on air without pads, etc. But I do think Lance is an isolated incident where his pro day is important today because teams have likely not had a very good up close look. I believe it was said that 30 teams are in attendance today.
He has no choice but to blow the pro day out of the water. He's played but 1 game in over a year & already has limited sample size. If he's anything short of blue chip in every aspect of throwing/moving he's undoubtedly gonna free fall. That said..I expect him to light it up & will be rooting for such.
I know we probably aren't going to draft him but Etienne looks amazing at Clemson pro day. Kids really got it. 1st round is to high for a rb imo, especially in this system. But all the tools are there.
I don't know a ton about him and won't act like I do. But Louis Reddick was saying an attribute that's being closely looked at is consistency in his throwing motion. When he's been inaccurate it's been a result of lazy mechanics.
Love Pitts. Dont be surprised if he goes top 5. -Can play in-line/H/slot & X seemingly on any down -Matchup nightmare - Extremely efficient & smart situationally IE if you need 5, he gets open against their best defender for 6 yards..everytime -Already an athletic freak yet still a baby physically This is controversial but id take him at 2 & never look back..prefer trading down of course
His feet drift,he moves off spots & steps in the bucket when the windows tighten & is under pressure. Saw it mostly in the 1 game from this past season. Central Arkansas dominated that game.Lance was under constant/immediate pressure & WRs were completely blanketed. NDSU losees that game by 2 TDs if Lance doesnt play.Instead they win going away in what Lance himself would call one of his worst to date. I think some of the accuracy concerns w him are overblown. His Surrounding cast consustently let him down. Between the CAU game & last season there are at last 10 drops/Wrs not properly running under well thrown balls, etc Manybof which were in EZ or easy TDs
it would take some nads to pick him at 2. Jets don't have a great history picking TEs named Kyle high in the draft.
Lance’s pro day a mixed bag much like TL’s - Footwork & drop backs were even smoother than on tape which among w his ability as a ball carrier is very enticing -Release has a bit of a wind up..looks awkward but still very effective EXCEPT when on run where there was an ugly rep or 2.Sinilar to Phillip Rivers though not as severe -Much more accurate to his left than to his right.Deadly accurate to his left..sporadic at best to his right He showed more torque on throws on tape but was a bit more accurate than i expected
Part of me was hoping he was light out. But it maybe good that he wasn't. Sounds like most of his flaws can be fixed. Just let him sit a year. Would be nice to be able to trade back and get Lance later while adding more draft capital.
None of the QBs in this draft have faced an NFL defense. So I don't see how some here are so cock sure that this class (with the maybe exception of Lawrence) will be better than Sam when all is said and done, especially looking at the recent history of top QB choices.
