Maccagnan was not only a bad drafter but usually got routed in trades and contracts. Henry Anderson, Daryl Roberts + Quincy Enunwa extensions while he didn't think about extending Robbie Anderson. Let's DeMario Davis walk for a modest contract, trades for him (probably a win), then let's him walk again for virtually the same contract. I also don't have the specifics, but I seem to remember us trading down in the later rounds, only to trade back up. I think we did this for Brandon Shell. Idzik was a horrible talent evaluator and I believe he let Rex have too much say in personnel decisions. But he at least cleaned up the cap and had a proper vision for playing the comp pick game and hoarded cap space while it was obvious the franchise would suck while we were fixing the veteran-ladled cap hell.
Parcells the mediocre GM made the following draft picks: Curtis Martin (RFA signing cost a first and third round pick) - Hall of Fame James Farrior # 8 overall - pro bowler Sean Ellis # 12 overall - pro bowler, played multiple positions John Abraham # 13 overall - pro bowler, long time since we had a pass rusher like him, traded for Nick Mangold pick Chad Pennington # 18 overall - arguably top 5 QB in Jets history Anthony Becht # 27 overall - very good blocking TE Randy Thomas (round two) - pro bowler Laveneous Coles (round three) - excellent player Dedric Ward (round three) - started all 16 games and had 800 yards the year after we traded Keyshawn Jason Fabini (round four) - did a great job at RT before taking over for Jumbo Elliot and becoming a quality starter at left tackle Leon Johnson (round four) - excellent backup RB and kick returner, fan favorite Jason Fergeson (ROUND F'M SEVEN) - solid starter Ryan Young (round seven) - started two full 16 game seasons at right tackle Gerald Sowell (round seven) - quality player Ignoring some of the backups that we got some use out of I would say that Bill Parcells did more in the draft in his four short years at the helm than we have seen in the decade before or after his departure. Parcells the mediocre GM made the following free agent signings: Curtis Martin (see above) Kevin Mawae - Hall of Fame center Vinny Testaverde - Personally I give Ken O'Brien the nod but you could make a case for him as the best QB we have had since Joe Namath Bryan Cox - Great job rushing the passer Rick Lyle - Quality starter, 67 straight starts Otis Smith - Good corner depth Roman Pfifer - Quality starter split time with James Farrior Kerry Jenkins - Undrafted free agent was a quality quard started 50 games for us Tom Tupa - Did a solid job at punter and played some QB for us John Hall - Undrafted free agent was one of the of the best kickers I can remember us having Ray Lucas - Would have made the playoffs if he got the start sooner that year Aside from these players he brought in a number of roll players that contributed here. While Parcells gets some criticism for signing expensive free agents he brought in some excellent players. So please tell me again why Parcells was such a mediocre GM.
No fair cherry picking, one way or the other. I'd say all first, second and third rounders for the last ten years would be sufficient to get a handle on the history.
It's hard to separate Parcells the coach from Parcells the GM. He wasn't necessarily great at choosing which players to acquire, but once he acquired them, he seemed to instantly have a superior understanding of that player's value and how to use him or else get rid of him. That quality seems to blur the boundary between one's duties as a coach and a GM. Parcells understood C-Mart's value and insisted on having him. Same with Jason Ferguson when he went to Dallas. Belichick either inherited that same quality, or has the same natural understanding. Both guys, once they actually have a player on the practice field, they know exactly how valuable and utile the player is (or isn't). Lesser coach/GM's (whether it's one person or two) tend to stick longer with substandard talent or poor fits because they simply don't have the same overarching perspective. Parcells sticking with Rick Mirer as long as he did was of course a major exception to this. Ugh.
Waht you say is partially true, but Parcells was also a jerk and would put players in his doghouse for little or nothing and then trade them away where they would play a lot better on other teams. Parcells was a manipulator, rather than a motivator. His approach didn't work with everyone.
This is a big reason why our team has a ton of cap space every other year. It's next to impossible to develop any sort of continuity when high draft picks are either traded or don't pan out.
Hindsight being 20/20, there is an alternate universe where the Jets are great at drafting and built an All-Pro offense in the first 5 rounds of the 2017 draft. 1 (6) Patrick Mahomes 2 (39) Dalvin Cook 3 (79) Kenny Golladay 4(141) George Kittle 5 (150) Aaron Jones
Spot on. It is still unbelievable to me that Chris Johnson added two guaranteed more years to MacCagnan's contract after consecutive 5-11 seasons in 2016 and 2017, That was also after MacCagnan's 2017 draft wherein he took 4 DBs and 3 receivers in one draft but zero OL AND DL . You would think MacCagnan had never watched a football game and thought that it was played exclusively outside the numbers.
Half the battle with getting 100% production out of your players is convincing them of two things: 1) they are capable of that play and 2) they are working in a factory somewhere if they don't do it for you. Parcells had that half nailed and got amazing production out of some very borderline talent and the top of the top out of some great players.
I can't believe they let him draft and then sack him... What could JD have got out of that draft? Mac was on a perma coffee high, nice enough bloke but another incompetent c*nt Saying that we got Q Williams who is now looking the business.
maybe my post came out a bit more negative than intended. I am not trying to make the point that Parcells was a terrible GM....he was very clearly the best we’ve had in decades. My point was more that he was a better coach than GM, and for sure was able to get the most out of his players. But he had plenty of shitty draft choices too...the decision to trade out of Orlando Pace and end up with James Farrior was not a good one....Farrior played better for Pitt than for us...I don’t think he ever made the pro bowl as a Jet. There were plenty of Rick Terry’s, Lamont Burns, Eric Ogbogu’s etc. of course they weren’t first rounders but overall...he had that one draft with four first rounders and hit with three of them (Brecht was a so-so TE). so yeah, he’s miles ahead of Bradway, Idzik, Tannenbaum and Mac no question. But he blew plenty of draft picks too. Did better in free agency because he knew exactly how to maximize his players potential.
hahaha you are so cheeky, ukjetsfan. I really appreciate your sense of humor, esp since I am having a pants day. Probably gonna leave my flat to take the lift down tto the lobby to run out to pick up some fish and chips in a bit though...that should pick up my spirits, haha.
This is accurate. Idzik did a great job clearing cap space, I don't think anyone was upset with that. He just had no plans on how to spend it. The money was there, he didn't spend it, and we sucked. And once we were out of it, he TRADED for Percy Harvin albeit it was a 6th round pick. But wasted $6.5 million in cap space. Dude was lost when it came to acquiring talent.
Yes this is true he cleared cap space but if I recall....it was all no brainers anyway. Didn’t he cut Sanchez, Santonio, etc. none of his cuts were brilliant strokes of genius...they were obvious moves that we all called out I’m not giving him ANY fucking credit...that guy was one horrendous GM. Seriously....in a WR draft he passed on many to take a shitty box safety. Jamal Adams was the wrong pick at that spot where we took him but at least he was a player. Calvin Pryor sucked balls. 14 player draft and they ALL sucked...Quincy was the only bright spot but he was injured.
