So here me out. If you do the trade and I'm not saying you do. But then you trade Darnold for a 1st next year, which is essentially a 2nd this year. Supposedly that is what his value it... now we have 1st every year and a franchise qb. Then you get weapons this year a build the offense... next year you focus on defense. All of a sudden we are a contender.

    You get it.

The #2 pick is the single best thing the Texans could get for Deshaun Watson.

It's worth more than the #3 pick and the Fins 1st round pick next year and Tua (unless the Texans really like Tua in which case not).

No, they don’t need teams bidding against each other to get maximum value because he’s worth what they are asking for and teams know it. You just need one team to say yes to the demand and that team will do so in order to secure him because they are better off with Watson. Your premise is based on an idea that teams won’t offer enough to get him unless another team is also trying to do so. That’s silly. The team that wants to trade for him knows he’s worth what they are asking for him and will say yes quickly to avoid another team raising their offer. This is so common sensical I’m shocked it even has to be said.

teams aren’t calling to trade for Mahomes because teams know they aren’t going to trade him not that they don’t have to.

the Texans don’t have to trade him; the idea that they do is patently false and has no basis in reality. They will have another QB and play NFL football indefinitely as long as they are solvent. Any negative repercussion is a blip on a franchise’s timeframe. But Watson does have to play for the Texans if they refuse to trade him and he ever wants to play in the NFL again. Interpreting the latter as leverage over the former is a completely silly argument of leverage.

Seriously, what you are describing is bidding against yourself.

    Think about it.

    My god

this small minded, short sighted, fan driven media pushed campaign is still going

    Stop the insanity.

No way we trade for an angry disgruntled baby who just signed a contract- who’s going to be on a 2-3 year trash team because of HIS trade giving away all our assets...!!!

I get that the media wants this, but for actual fans to want this proves how bad the Jets have been for so long, that just a back page grab is worth it.

    lame

No, you’re not bidding at all, your attempting to obtain an extremely valuable asset that you want and believe will lead to success in which if you don’t meet the demands you will not obtain. That’s not bidding against yourself that’s making an offer for an asset you want to obtain but may not get unless you pay the price. A bid applies to a situation in which the buyer dictates the price. You have no idea what is going on in this scenario if you think that is what is going on. That’s the value when a team has a great player that other teams want and under a long term contract.

Maybe JD should hire a private detective to get some dirt or incriminating pictures on McNair, then make him an offer he can't refuse! ;) LOL

Why should anyone put an ounce of credence into anything Dylan Ciorra says? A rumor is not created by a single tweet, it requires "circulation;" no need to give it any.

He's just one of those "aspiring journalists" on Twitter that's hoping to guess something correctly so that in the future he can completely fabricate other stuff and people will point out how he got one right before and retweet him and follow him and all that other inane BS that happens on Twitter so people can fake their way through life.

Kind of like that other mook that was saying the Jets were "in the process of building a package" a few days ago.

I mean, there's a precedent. Mike Florio started out as a blogger that did nothing but fabricate NFL rumors and now he's got his own TV show.

I don't understand your point in light of the practicalities of the Watson situation (Watson being adamant that he will not play again for the team). In my view, Houston in practical terms has two choices:

    A. Refuse to meet Watson's demand to be traded, holding out for what they think Watson is worth and showing Watson who is boss by penalizing him with fines and forfeited salary. This choice in practical terms results in:

    1) ongoing negative team win-loss performance (loss of Watson's performance with no player compensation for Watson's loss);

    2) continued deterioration of team morale (continued losing with no immediate even hope to begin to turn that around; this includes poor 2021 draft assets and poor attractiveness to prospective free agents; Houston is already getting the reputation as a player graveyard which treats their players terribly);

and 3) a public relations nightmare (the Bengals caught some flack for their stubbornness with Carson Palmer in 2011, but this will pale in comparison to what will appear as Houston's vindictiveness in 2021 [let us remember that today there is increasing public acceptance of player demands to be traded, see the NBA]).

or B. Trade Watson for the best package the market will bear. This results in added player assets that will inspire some hope for future team performance on the part of the Houston players and fans, with more team attractiveness to prospective free agents from other teams, and more player and team acceptance of the reasonableness of Houston team management.

So, yes, Houston management can go for choice A, but choice A, in practical terms, would set back their rebuilding of team perfomance and perception immeasurably and so would be an incredibly stupid choice.

I would say it was this past year when McNair said publicly that Watson would have a say in the HC/GM search.

    1. Teams go through periods of losing. The idea that not trading Watson will create some abnormal period of losing that will prevent them from ever rebounding from is meritless.

    2. there are only 30 teams to play for. A team doesn’t have to sign other team’s feee agents to be successful so reputation will likely have minimal impact on their ability to succeed if they draft well and create positive relationships with those players. Everything else you says is simply contrived assumptions.

    3. there is no indication that Texans fans want the Texans to trade Watson and will be upset at the organization if they don’t trade their best player. None whatsoever. That’s not even contrived assumption, it is pure fantasy.

having an unhappy Watson doesn't benefit them

players around the league are following this closely. If they try to keep the guy there against his will they will miss out on so many free agents

I think you're underestimating the costs of letting Watson sit.

    1. If Houston gets a high draft choice this year for Watson, there are several draftable quarterbacks available that are considered franchise quarterback quality. Hitting on one of these would greatly decrease the number of losing years the Texans would face.

    2. Yes, a team can build through the draft, but this takes time, which can add years of losing, particularly for a poor 4-12 team which has lost two of its best players (Watson and Watt). Further delays in building a winning team via the draft can be expected because Houston has no first or second round draft choices in 2021.

    3. It seems likely to me that Houston fans will be upset when Watson is sitting at home and rookie franchise-quality quarterbacks the Texans could have had are having promising rookie years.

So, yes, these scenarios are possible rather than certain. However, I fail to see how they are less probable than your scenario that the Houston players, potential free agents, and Houston fans will be fine with losing Watson without compensation when a franchise-quality quarterback could have been drafted via trade in a few days.

With the possibility of Seattle trading Wilson, would you be hesitant in offering up that pick?

I was all in on giving up any combination of 3 1's over the next 2 or 3 years, but that pick can legitimately be the #1 overall next year if Wilson is traded.
